Nursing profession is subjected to high stress owing to its nature of work. Stress can result from various internal and environmental demands and is manifested physiologically and psychologically. The present study was conducted to determine stress, predictors of stress and stress symptoms as experienced by nurses in a tertiary care hospital of North India. The present study was descriptive in nature involving 103 nurses working in special units of the hospital. The nurses were selected conveniently. Demographic profile sheet, modified workplace stress scale (WSS) and Workplace stress symptom scale (WSSS) were administered to collect the data. Findings of the study revealed that 50% of the nurses experienced low stress while 28% and 22% experienced moderate and high stress respectively. Further, job challenge, role- conflict, self- conflict, workload, lack of job autonomy, informal support and goal clarity, improper performance appraisal, poor inter- personal relations and job insecurity were identified as significant predictors of stress. Various stress symptoms as experienced by nurses such as exhaustion, irritation, difficulty in concentration, weariness and feebleness, nervousness, reduced work performance, insomnia and reduced self- confidence, indifference towards anything and depression were also reported. The findings of the study give insight into the significant predictors of stress which can be buffered using various stress management strategies by the nurse managers

Acrokeratosis verruciformis is very rare genodermatosis that was originally described by Hopf in 1931. A 29-years-old male presented to skin outpatient department with brown-colored hyperkeratotic plaques on dorsum of both feet that clinically mimicked as necrolytic acral erythema in our case. Biopsy was taken from lesion that shows hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, and slight papillomatosis along with well-circumscribed elevation of epidermis resembling church spires. No dyskeratotic cells were seen

Monitoring of Blood Pressure using Invasive or Non-invasive Method in Critically Ill Patients: A Review

    Get PDF
Blood pressure is a core vital sign used as a basis for diagnosis and management of patients in critical care setting. Blood pressure (BP) can be monitored by both invasive and non-invasive methods. Invasive blood measurement using arterial access is considered the “gold” standard in critically ill patients. However, invasive methods put patient at risk of bleeding and infection as compared to non-invasive methods. Non-invasive blood pressure monitoring can be obtained through oscillometric or manual auscultatory sphygmomanometer. The objective of this review is to provide a global perspective of health care providers towards use of invasive or non-invasive method of measuring blood pressure. Both theoretical and existing clinical studies have suggested that non-invasive measurements may differ from invasive intra-arterial estimates of blood pressure

Urinary catheterization facilitates the drainage of urinary bladder. The current study was carried out to assess the point prevalence of indwelling catheterized patients admitted in a tertiary care hospital and to assess the related practices of nurses. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Sampling technique was purposive. Survey of all the admitted patients was carried out in a single day to assess the point prevalence of catheterized patients. Tools for data collection comprised of sociodemographic profile and clinical profile of the catheterized patients. A checklist was used to assess the self-expressed practices of nurses regarding insertion, care and removal of catheter. The total number of admitted patients on the day of survey was 1718. 317 (18.5%) patients were found to be catheterized. Majority of the patients were in Intensive Care Unit followed by Emergency areas and were suffering from neurological disorders. Most of the self-expressed practices of nurses regarding catheterization were adequate other than documentation of the procedure; providing perineal care at the time of catheterization, catheter care and removing the catheter; and clamping the catheter before its removal.

Background: Hospitals are part of our society. Barriers faced by people with disability (PWD) in hospitals reflect obstacles in society also. Women with disability (WWD) are at particular disadvantage. Our objective was to explore the domain related to the problems that WWD face in accessing obstetrics and gynecology (OBG) services in government institutes/hospitals of Chandigarh. Methods: This mixed quantitative and qualitative research was done during 2013-2017. Stakeholders included WWD, their families, self-help groups, community-based organisations, NGOs, doctors, nurses, public health experts, research scholars and government bodies involved in disability services. Five major government institutes/hospitals of Chandigarh were purposively selected for the study. In-depth interviews were conducted among different groups to gain an insight into their views regarding the degree to which the reproductive health services were disabled-friendly.Results: Most (80-90%) of the stakeholders emphasized the need of making OBG services disabled-friendly. The majority of doctors and nurses said that no special training was given to them to deal with WWD. They opined that SRH needs of WWD were different from other women. Lack of access was the main barrier to OBG care in hospitals reported by 46% of WWD. Most of the hospitals lacked any special provisions for PWD.Conclusions: There is a lack of concern and apathy for WWD in the society. Hospitals lack a disabled-friendly attitude, design and facilities. Access to OBG services for WWD was barrier ridden

Objectives: To compare the shear bond strength of recycled orthodontic metal brackets using an adhesion booster and conventional primer and using the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) score to assess the site of debonding. Materials and Methods: Eighty premolar teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups of 20 teeth each: Group A-New brackets and Transbond XT, Group B-Recycled brackets and Transbond XT, Group C-Recycled brackets and Transbond XT + Enhance LC. Brackets were recycled using sandblaster. Bond strength was tested on a universal testing machine and remnant adhesive on the tooth surface was determined. Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney test were carried out to know the significant difference between the groups. Chi – square test was used to determine significant differences in the ARI (Adhesive Remnant Index) scores. Results: Highest mean load was recorded in Group A (9.58±1.72 MPa), followed by Group C (8.60±2.05 MPa) and Group B (6.39±1.64 MPa). Chi- square test indicated significant differences (P=.002) in ARI scores. Group A and Group C were associated significantly for score 2 of ARI; Group B for Score 0 of ARI. Conclusion: The bond strength of recycled orthodontic brackets with Transbond XT was significantly lower when compared to bond strength of recycled brackets with an adhesion booster. After recycling the brackets with sandblaster and using an adhesion booster, the previously debonded brackets gave the bond strength comparable to new brackets with Transbond XT. The ARI data showed statistically significant association between the ARI scores and the groups

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, was released to provide coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading scientists, researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research seeks to improve our knowledge of ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifying potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation concludes that ChatGPT performed differently in each subject area including finance, coding and maths. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported hallucinations within Generative AI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial.Comment: Preprint submitted to IoTCPS Elsevier (2023
