NLO automated tools for QCD and beyond
Theoretical predictions for scattering processes with multi-particle final
states at next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD are essential to
fully exploit the physics potential of present and future high-energy

An Analytical Model for Wireless Mesh Networks with Collision-Free TDMA and Finite Queues
Wireless mesh networks are a promising technology for connecting sensors and
actuators with high flexibility and low investment costs. In industrial
applications, however, reliability is essential. Therefore, two time-slotted
medium access methods, DSME and TSCH, were added to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
They allow collision-free communication in multi-hop networks and provide
channel hopping for mitigating external interferences. The slot schedule used
in these networks is of high importance for the network performance. This paper
supports the development of efficient schedules by providing an analytical
model for the assessment of such schedules, focused on TSCH. A Markov chain
model for the finite queue on every node is introduced that takes the slot
distribution into account. The models of all nodes are interconnected to
calculate network metrics such as packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and
throughput. An evaluation compares the model with a simulation of the Orchestra
schedule. The model is applied to Orchestra as well as to two simple
distributed scheduling algorithms to demonstrate the importance of
traffic-awareness for achieving high throughput.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figure
Numerical Computation of p-values with myFitter
Likelihood ratio tests are a widely used method in global analyses in
particle physics. The computation of the statistical significance (p-value) of
these tests is usually done with a simple formula that relies on Wilks'
theorem. There are, however, many realistic situations where Wilks' theorem
does not apply. In particular, no simple formula exists for the comparison of
models that are not nested, in the sense that one model can be obtained from
the other by fixing some of its parameters. In this paper I present methods for
efficient numerical computations of p-values, which work for both nested and
non-nested models and do not rely on additional approximations. These methods
have been implemented in a publicly available C++ framework for maximum
likelihood fits called myFitter and have recently been applied in a global
analysis of the Standard Model with a fourth generation of fermions
Ultrasonic Songs of Male Mice
Previously it was shown that male mice, when they encounter female mice or their pheromones, emit ultrasonic vocalizations with frequencies ranging over 30–110 kHz. Here, we show that these vocalizations have the characteristics of song, consisting of several different syllable types, whose temporal sequencing includes the utterance of repeated phrases. Individual males produce songs with characteristic syllabic and temporal structure. This study provides a quantitative initial description of male mouse songs, and opens the possibility of studying song production and perception in an established genetic model organism
Breakdown of the Narrow Width Approximation for New Physics
The narrow width approximation is used in high energy physics to reduce the
complexity of scattering calculations. It is a fortunate accident that it works
so well for the Standard Model, but in general it will fail in the context of
new physics. We find numerous examples of significant corrections when the
calculation is performed fully off-shell including a finite width, notably from
effects from the decay matrix elements. If not taken into account, attempts to
reconstruct the Lagrangian of a new physics discovery from data would result in
