Anomalous diffusivity and electric conductivity for low concentration electrolytes in nanopores
The dynamic properties of electrolytes in nanopores were studied using the equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamic simulations. The realistic primitive model and the restrictive primitive models that were widely used in liquid state theory were applied to the electrolyte model. The electrolytic ions that were found to be immersed in the water were treated as dielectric continuum or macroscopic dielectric continuum. Surgical Fixation of a Comminuted Inter-Trochanteric Fracture in a Patient with Bilateral Below Knee Amputation
Surgical fixation of hip fractures in patients with below knee amputation is challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining optimal traction for reduction of the fracture. Surgeons may face difficulty in positioning such patients on the traction table due to the absence of the foot and distal lower limb. There are several techniques described to overcome this technical difficulty. In this case report, we present a case of a 64-year old gentleman with bilateral below knee amputation presenting with a comminuted right intertrochanteric fracture. We highlight a simple and effective method of applying skin traction to obtain adequate reduction for hip fracture fixation
Targeting buyers of counterfeits of luxury brands: a study on attitudes of Singapore consumers
The paper examines the factors that influence Singaporean consumer's attitudes towards counterfeits of luxury brands. Data was collected from a convenience sample of postgraduate students of a large university using a self-administered questionnaire. Social influence, brand consciousness and price quality inference were found to significantly influence attitudes towards counterfeits of luxury brands. There is no significant relationship with personal gratification, value consciousness, and brand prestige. Attitudes towards counterfeits of luxury brands were found to influence purchase intention
NFI transcription factors provide chromatin access to maintain stem cell identity while preventing unintended lineage fate choices
Tissue homeostasis and regeneration rely on resident stem cells (SCs), whose behaviour is regulated through niche-dependent crosstalk. The mechanisms underlying SC identity are still unfolding. Here, using spatiotemporal gene ablation in murine hair follicles, we uncover a critical role for the transcription factors (TFs) nuclear factor IB (NFIB) and IX (NFIX) in maintaining SC identity. Without NFI TFs, SCs lose their hair-regenerating capability, and produce skin bearing striking resemblance to irreversible human alopecia, which also displays reduced NFIs. Through single-cell transcriptomics, ATAC-Seq and ChIP-Seq profiling, we expose a key role for NFIB and NFIX in governing super-enhancer maintenance of the key hair follicle SC-specific TF genes. When NFIB and NFIX are genetically removed, the stemness epigenetic landscape is lost. Super-enhancers driving SC identity are decommissioned, while unwanted lineages are de-repressed ectopically. Together, our findings expose NFIB and NFIX as crucial rheostats of tissue homeostasis, functioning to safeguard the SC epigenome from a breach in lineage confinement that otherwise triggers irreversible tissue degeneration
