    Entomopathogenic nematodes for biological control of codling moth

    Entomopathogenic nematodes are often found naturally infecting codling moth larvae. The effect of an autumn treatment with S. feltiae on the fruit damage in the following summer was evaluated by treating 4 different apple orchards in October 2004 and 2005 at application rates of 3.75; 2 and 1.5 billion nematodes in 4000 l / ha. In three of the treated orchards, one treated with 3.75x109 nematodes/ha the other two treated with 2e9 nematode/ha, reduction in fruit damage was around 50%. In the most heavily infested orchard, which was treated with 1.5x109 nematode/ha only 33% reduction in fruit damage was achieved. Compared to previous studies, this was the first assessing the effect on the fruit damage in the summer following the treatment rather than assessing the mortality of sentinel larvae fixed to the treated tree trunks

    Selection of sampling rate for digital control of aircrafts

    The considerations in selecting the sample rates for digital control of aircrafts are identified and evaluated using the optimal discrete method. A high performance aircraft model which includes a bending mode and wind gusts was studied. The following factors which influence the selection of the sampling rates were identified: (1) the time and roughness response to control inputs; (2) the response to external disturbances; and (3) the sensitivity to variations of parameters. It was found that the time response to a control input and the response to external disturbances limit the selection of the sampling rate. The optimal discrete regulator, the steady state Kalman filter, and the mean response to external disturbances are calculated

    Prevailing Wage Laws and Construction Labor Markets

    Prevailing wage laws, which require that construction workers employed by private contractors on public projects be paid at least the wages and benefits that are "prevailing" for similar work in or near the locality in which the project is located, have been the focus of an extensive policy debate. We find that the relative wages of construction workers decline slightly after the repeal of a state prevailing wage law. However, the small overall impact of law repeal masks substantial differences in outcomes for different groups of construction employees. Repeal is associated with a sizeable reduction in the union wage premium and a significant narrowing of the black/nonblack wage differential for construction workers.

    Exploiting Non-Markovianity of the Environment for Quantum Control

    When the environment of an open quantum system is non-Markovian, amplitude and phase flow not only from the system into the environment but also back. Here we show that this feature can be exploited to carry out quantum control tasks that could not be realized if the system was isolated. Inspired by recent experiments on superconducting phase circuits, we consider an anharmonic ladder with resonant amplitude control only. This restricts realizable operations to SO(N). The ladder is immersed in an environment of two-level systems. Strongly coupled two-level systems lead to non-Markovian effects, whereas the weakly coupled ones result in single-exponential decay. Presence of the environment allows for implementing diagonal unitaries that, together with SO(N), yield the full group SU(N). Using optimal control theory, we obtain errors that are solely T1T_1-limited
