Homosexuel et hétérosexuel : les termes en question

À mon sens, il est tout particulièrement perturbant de parler d’histoire hétérosexuelle, car cette histoire met en péril l’hypothèse habituelle, implicite et déterministe selon laquelle l’hétérosexualité serait une catégorie fixe, hors du temps, biologique, et synonyme de la conjonction des organes et des actes mâles et femelles. Au contraire, comme je le soutiens, l’hétérosexualité (tout comme l’homosexualité) a un passé méconnu mais varié, et un futur ouvert et encore à déterminer. Pour paraphraser Marx, les femmes et les hommes font leur propre histoire sexuelle et affective. Mais illes ne la font pas comme bon leur semble. Illes la font dans des conditions héritées du passé, qu’illes modifient par leur activité et leur organisation politique autant que par leur vision d’un futur auquel illes donnent toute sa valeur.It is particularly unsettling, I think, to speak of heterosexual history, for that history challenges our usual, implicit, deterministic assumption that heterosexuality is fixed, timeless, biological, synonymous with the conjunction of female and male organs and acts. To the contrary, I argue, heterosexuality (like homosexuality) has an unheralded, various past, and an open, undetermined future. To paraphrase Karl Marx, women and men make their own sexual and affectional history. But they do not make this history just as they please. They make it under circumstances given by the past and altered by their political activity and organization, and their vision of a valued future
