Prospects for Mirage Mediation
Mirage mediation reduces the fine-tuning in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model by dynamically arranging a cancellation between anomaly-mediated
and modulus-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We explore the conditions under
which a mirage "messenger scale" is generated near the weak scale and the
little hierarchy problem is solved. We do this by explicitly including the
dynamics of the SUSY-breaking sector needed to cancel the cosmological
constant. The most plausible scenario for generating a low mirage scale does
not readily admit an extra-dimensional interpretation. We also review the
possibilities for solving the mu/Bmu problem in such theories, a potential
hidden source of fine-tuning.Comment: 14 page
Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome
To discuss challenges concerning treatment for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) and review complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies being evaluated for this condition, we performed a comprehensive search of articles published from 1990–2005 using the PubMed, Medline databases. Data from the articles were abstracted and pooled by subject. Keywords cross-searched with CP/CPPS included: complementary, alternative, integrative, therapies, interventions, nutrition, antioxidants, herbs, supplements, biofeedback and acupuncture. Listed articles with no abstracts were not included. Various CAM therapies for CP/CPPS exist including biofeedback, acupuncture, hyperthermia and electrostimulation. Additionally, a variety of in vitro and in vivo studies testing herbal and nutritional supplements were found. Saw palmetto, cernilton and quercetin were the most frequently tested supplements for CP/CPPS. Although many CAM therapies demonstrate positive preliminary observations as prospective treatments for CP/CPPS, further exploratory studies including more randomized, controlled trials are necessary for significant validation as treatment options for this complex disorder
Microwave Dielectric Loss at Single Photon Energies and milliKelvin Temperatures
The microwave performance of amorphous dielectric materials at very low
temperatures and very low excitation strengths displays significant excess
loss. Here, we present the loss tangents of some common amorphous and
crystalline dielectrics, measured at low temperatures (T < 100 mK) with near
single-photon excitation energies, using both coplanar waveguide (CPW) and
lumped LC resonators. The loss can be understood using a two-level state (TLS)
defect model. A circuit analysis of the half-wavelength resonators we used is
outlined, and the energy dissipation of such a resonator on a multilayered

Purely Four-dimensional Viable Anomaly Mediation
Anomaly mediation of supersymmetry breaking solves the supersymmetric flavor
problem thanks to its ultraviolet-insensitivity. However, it suffers from two
problems: sleptons have negative masses-squared, and there are likely bulk
moduli that spoil the framework. Here, we present the first fully
ultraviolet-insensitive model of anomaly mediation with positive slepton
masses-squared in a purely four-dimensional framework. Our model is based on
the additional D-term contributions to the sparticle masses, and the conformal

DREDed Anomaly Mediation
We offer a guide to dimensional reduction (DRED) in theories with anomaly
mediated supersymmetry breaking. Evanescent operators proportional to epsilon
arise in the bare Lagrangian when it is reduced from d=4 to d= (4-2 epsilon)
dimensions. In the course of a detailed diagrammatic calculation, we show that
inclusion of these operators is crucial. The evanescent operators conspire to
drive the supersymmetry-breaking parameters along anomaly-mediation
trajectories across heavy particle thresholds, guaranteeing the ultraviolet
