    Beyond PTSD An Evolving Relationship Between Trauma Theory and Family Violence Research

    During the past 20 years, we have learned how similarly harmful are experiences of terror, violence, and abuse, whether they occur on the combat field or at home. The field of family violence has gained much from the field of traumatic stress, and collaborations between these two previously separate fields have yielded important new answers, as well as new research questions. The field of traumatic stress is poised to integrate, more fully than in the past, a variety of aspects of trauma such as social betrayal, as well as outcomes of trauma such as depression, criminality, and physiological harm that go beyond posttraumatic stress. The field of family violence has much to offer in this process. We look forward to improved research designs that will further our knowledge of how trauma affects aspects of people’s lives, including productivity, relationships, cognition, and emotions, in negative and positive ways.     Utility value interventions: Why and how instructors should use them in college psychology courses.

    According to expectancy-value models of achievement motivation, a core component of increasing student motivation is utility value. Utility value refers to the importance that a task has in one’s future goals. Utility value interventions provide an opportunity for students to make explicit connections between course content and their own lives. A large body of literature suggests that utility value interventions are effective for a wide range of students (e.g., both adolescent and adult learners) in a variety of courses (e.g., introductory psychology, introductory biology, and physics). This review provides (1) an overview of an expectancy value model of achievement motivation, (2) a comprehensive review of the experimental studies of utility value interventions in psychology, (3) concrete pedagogical recommendations based on the evidence from over thirty studies of the utility value intervention, and (4) suggestions for future research directions. After reading this review, college-level psychology instructors should be able to decide whether the utility value intervention is appropriate for their own course and, if so, implement the intervention effectively

    Implementation of the utility value intervention: An adaptation of implementation science frameworks for higher education teaching and learning research

    The research-practice gap refers to the failure of empirical effectiveness research to translate meaningfully into practical applications. In higher education research, this is evident in the low use or uptake of evidence-based practices in college classrooms. To help address the research-practice gap, educational researchers can draw on theories, frameworks, and methodologies from implementation science. Implementation science is a field of research originating in public health specifically designed to study the variables related to the process of getting evidence-based practices into routine use. The present study adapted multiple frameworks and validated measures of implementation outcomes to identify the facilitators to and barriers of implementing a motivational intervention in university-level general psychology courses. The results highlight organizational, instructor, and student-level factors that influence implementation. The study itself provides a demonstration of how to incorporate elements of implementation science into higher education research
