Mirobriga : A Portuguese-American Project in Southern Portugal
"In 1981, the faculty of the Department of Art History and Archaeology of the University of Missouri-Columbia was invited by Dr. Caetano de Mello Beirao, Director of Antiquities for Southern Portugal, to collaborate in archaeological field work in Portugal. This was the first time that an American archaeological team was to work in Portugal. The aim of the collaboration was the investigation of a Portuguese site by modern field techniques, both to provide practical experience for young Portuguese and American archaeologists, and to generate international scholarly interest in ancient Portugal . The site chosen for the project was Mirobriga, a small town or sanctuary of Roman times, about 140 km. southeast of Lisbon, which had been founded on an earlier settlement."--Page 35.A Portuguese-American Project in Southern Portugal.
