Emergence of multi-drug resistant strains among bacterial isolates in burn wound swabs in a tertiary care centre, Nanded, Maharashtra, India
Background: Infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among burn patients. The worldwide emergence of antimicrobial resistance among a wide variety of burn wound pathogens, particularly nosocomial isolates, limits the available therapeutic options for effective treatment of burn wound infections. The study was conducted in the department of Microbiology, Dr. S.C.G.M.C, Nanded, Maharashtra, India to determine aerobic bacterial isolates from burn wound swabs and describe their antibiogram. Methods: Two wound swabs were taken from 570 patients, cultured aerobically. The isolates were identified by standard microbiological methods and antibiotic sensitivity pattern was determined. Results: Among 570 patients, 434 (76.14%) were female and 136 (23.85%) were male. Out of the total swabs collected, 548 (96.14%) were culture positive and 36 (6.56%) were having 2 isolates. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (34.93%) was the commonest isolate followed by Staphylococcus aureus (22.77%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (13.87%), Escherichia coli (13.01%) and Coagulase negative staphylococcus (11.31%). Incidence of MRSA was 59.39% and ESBL producers were 61.46 %. Gram positive isolates were 100% sensitive to Vancomycin, Linezolid and Gram negative organisms to Imipenem. Conclusions: Routine periodic sampling of burn wounds would facilitate the selection of appropriate empirical therapy and reduce the incidence of multidrug resistant infections among burn patients
High-Performance Silicon-Based Multiple Wavelength Source
We demonstrate a stable CMOS-compatible on-chip multiple-wavelength source by
filtering and modulating individual lines from a frequency comb generated by a
microring resonator optical parametric oscillator.. We show comb operation in a
low-noise state that is stable and usable for many hours. Bit-error rate
measurements demonstrate negligible power penalty from six independent
frequencies when compared to a tunable diode laser baseline. Open eye diagrams
confirm the fidelity of the 10 Gb/s data transmitted at the comb frequencies
and the suitability of this device for use as a fully integrated silicon-based
WDM source.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Pili multigemini of the eye: unusual and rare presentation
Pili Multigemini (PM) is an uncommon, pilar dysplasia characterized by clusters of hair shafts emerging from a single follicle. We present a rare and unique case of PM involving the eye. A 43 year old Caucasian male, presented with a prolonged history of a recurrent lesion at the right upper eyelid, present for two years. Clinical examination revealed a subcutaneous cyst with a prominent follicular pore with a differential diagnosis of epidermoid cyst, nevus and pili bifurcati. Excisional biopsy was performed and microscopy showed a benign malformed hair follicle containing multiple different hair shafts enclosed in a common outer root sheath; consistent with the diagnosis of Pilli Multigemini. Pili Multigemini was first described by Flemming in 1883 and is frequently found in the beard of adults and scalp of children. To our knowledge, this is the first case of Pilli Multigemini involving the eye. its noteworthy to consider during diagnostic workup; as well as to exclude other follicular and inflammatory abnormalities involving the eye
kehamilan

Biophysical investigations on the active site of brain hexokinase
Replacement of Mg (II), the natural activator of brain hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1) by paramagnetic Mn (II) without affecting the physiological properties of the enzyme, has rendered brain hexokinase accessible to investigations by magnetic resonance methods. Based on such studies, a site on the enzyme, where Mn (II) binds directly with high affinity has been identified and characterized in detail. Use of β,γ-bidentate Cr (III) ATP as an exchange-inert analogue for Mn (II) ATP has shown that Mn (II) binding directly to the enzyme has no catalytic role but another Mn (II) ion binding simultaneously and independently to the enzyme through the nucleotide bridge participates in enzyme function. However, using this direct binding Mn (II) ion and a covalently bound spin label as paramagnetic probes a beginning has been made in mapping the ligand binding sites of the enzyme. Ultra-violet difference spectroscopy has revealed the presence of at least two glucose 6-phosphate locations on the enzyme one of which presumably is the high affinity regulatory site modulated by substrate glucose. Elution behaviour of the enzyme on a phosphocellulose column suggests that glucose induces a specific phosphate site on the enzyme to which the phosphate bearing regulatory ligands of the enzyme may bind

The effects of solar-geomagnetically induced currents on electrical systems in nuclear power stations
This report presents the results of a study to evaluate the potential effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) caused by the solar disturbances on the in-plant electrical distribution system and equipment in nuclear power stations. The plant-specific electrical distribution system for a typical nuclear plant is modeled using the ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). The computer model simulates online equipment and loads from the station transformer in the switchyard of the power station to the safety-buses at 120 volts to which all electronic devices are connected for plant monitoring. The analytical model of the plant`s electrical distribution system is studied to identify the transient effects caused by the half-cycle saturation of the station transformers due to GIC. This study provides results of the voltage harmonics levels that have been noted at various electrical buses inside the plant. The emergency circuits appear to be more susceptible to high harmonics due to the normally light load conditions. In addition to steady-state analysis, this model was further analyzed simulating various plant transient conditions (e.g., loss of load or large motor start-up) occurring during GIC events. Detail models of the plant`s protective relaying system employed in bus transfer application were included in this model to study the effects of the harmonic distortion of the voltage input. Potential harmonic effects on the uniterruptable power system (UPS) are qualitatively discussed as well
