학위논문 (박사) -- 서울대학교 대학원 : 인문대학 언어학과, 2021. 2. Nam Seungho. This thesis investigates the semantics and syntax of causation in monophasal predicates and differentiates between the semantic types of causation and syntactic types of causation by criticizing various semantic and syntactic approaches to causation and CAUSE. It will be argued that the semantic approaches to what is loosely referred to as “defeasible causatives” are either very strong, making a distinction between the sentential and contextual meaning impossible, or not comprehensive. It will be argued that the semantic types of causation can be explained by using the notion of the atomicity of subevents. Accordingly, a monophasal predicate can denote four types of causation; “causation with an atomic result” (a type of causation, whose result is entailed or implied to be atomic), “causation with plural sub-results” (a type of causation, which is composed of plural sub-results), “causation with zero-results” (a type of causation whose result only derives from a plurality of causing subevents) and “destined causation” (a type of causation whose result derives from a plurality of an “extended chain of disjoint sub-events”). This thesis also argues that previous approaches to the syntax of causation in monophasal predicates suffer configurational problems, namely an improper place of syntactic heads with respect to each other which results in various syntactic problems. It will be claimed that syntactically, the functional head CAUSE can give rise to “causative fluctuation”, which is the syntactic inversion of CAUSE with respect to the root —i.e. CAUSE appears above or below the verbal root, and canonically, all types of causation can show causative fluctuation in a causative predicate. This thesis argues that the existing characteristics of causative fluctuation can be seen in two major environments. The first environment is the English ‘induced action’ verbs, and resultatives with unselected objects. It will be argued that only the former but not the latter shows causative fluctuation. The second environment is what I claim to be a type of unmarked anticausative which unlike other unmarked anticausatives constitutes a VOICE (semi-anticausatives). It will be argued that semi-anticausatives only allow CAUSE to appear above the lexical root and this behavior can be extended to all anticausatives and ‘non-causative resultatives’. 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Causation in Monophasal Predicates 1 1.2 Rethinking Causation and CAUSE 2 1.3 Summary of the Dissertation: Causative Fluctuation 4 2 Previous Semantic Accounts of Causation and Defeasible Causatives 6 2.1 CAUSE-less Approaches 7 2.1.1 Possible Worlds Approach 7 2.1.2 Scale Approach 8 2.1.3 CAUSE-less Modal Based Approach 12 2.1.4 Low Applicative Approach 17 2.1.5 Force Dynamics Approach 18 2.2 CAUSE-based with Sublexical Modality Approaches 20 2.2.1 CAUSE-based Approach to 'Prospective Possessor' Verbs 20 2.2.2 CAUSE-based Approach to Failed Attempt Predicates 23 2.3 Summary 25 3 Previous Syntactic Accounts of Causation 26 3.1 Polymorphic Approach to CAUSE 26 3.1.1 Configurational Problems 31 3.1.1.1 Sequence of Subevents 31 3.1.1.2 'Voice Bundling' 32 3.1.2 Secondary v and VOICE 35 3.1.2.1 Secondary VOICE in Monophasal Causative 37 3.1.2.2 Again and "Secondary v" 45 3.1.3 Summary 47 3.2 Applicative Approaches to Causatives 48 3.3 Event Decompositional Approach 54 3.4 Other Approaches 59 3.5 Summary 60 4. On the Use of Molecular Weight Cutoff Cassettes to Measure Dynamic Relaxivity of Novel Gadolinium Contrast Agents: Example Using Hyaluronic Acid Polymer Complexes in Phosphate-Buffered Saline

    Get PDF
The aims of this study were to determine whether standard extracellular contrast agents of Gd(III) ions in combination with a polymeric entity susceptible to hydrolytic degradation over a finite period of time, such as Hyaluronic Acid (HA), have sufficient vascular residence time to obtain comparable vascular imaging to current conventional compounds and to obtain sufficient data to show proof of concept that HA with Gd-DTPA ligands could be useful as vascular imaging agents. We assessed the dynamic relaxivity of the HA bound DTPA compounds using a custom-made phantom, as well as relaxation rates at 10.72 MHz with concentrations ranging between 0.09 and 7.96 mM in phosphate-buffered saline. Linear dependences of static longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) on concentration were found for most measured samples, and the HA samples continued to produce high signal strength after 24 hours after injection into a dialysis cassette at 3T, showing superior dynamic relaxivity values compared to conventional contrast media such as Gd-DTPA-BMA

Introduction: Whitening toothpastes which have been accepted in populations may affect properties of enamel and restorative materials. The aim of this study was to compare the microhardness of human enamel and Z250 microhybrid composite resin after brushing with two whitening toothpastes.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study of enamel specimens, forty five freshly extracted human incisors were prepared and divided into three groups of control enamel (ClE), Crest enamel (CtE) and Aquafresh enamel (AfE). For composite resin specimens, forty five cylindrical-shaped specimens of light-cured Z250 composite were prepared and divided into three groups of control composite (ClC), Crest composite (CtC) and Aquafresh composite (AfC). The control groups were brushed without toothpaste. Crest and Aquafresh group specimens were brushed with Crest and Aquafresh whitening toothpastes, respectively. Vickers microhardness test wasperformed for all groups. Data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests. Results: Microhardness values of ClE, CtE, AfE, ClC, CtC and AfC groups were 332.99 ± 26.59, 313.99 ± 20.56, 323.57 ± 27.96, 137.1 ± 3.16, 122.95 ± 3.27 and 130.36 ± 4.8, respectively. One-way ANOVA showed no significant differences among three enamel groups but there was significant difference among composite groups(p<0.01).Conclusion: Crest and Aquafresh whitening toothpastes did not affect enamel hardness but reduced the microhardness value of Z-250 composite resin. However, Crest whitening toothpaste decreased the microhardness more than Aquafresh

Role of Macrophages in the Pathogenesis of Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common and most intensively studied chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Several cofactors, such as an impaired skin barrier function, modifications of the immune system, and a complex genetic background, direct the course of AD. Within this complex network, macrophages play a pivotal role in enhanced susceptibility to cutaneous infections and act as central connecting components in the pathogenesis of AD on the cellular level. In AD, macrophages are known to accumulate in acutely and chronically inflamed skin. During the early and short inflammatory phase, macrophages exert proinflammatory functions like antigen-presenting phagocytosis and the production of inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that facilitate the resolution of inflammation. However, persistence of pro-inflammatory activity and altered function of macrophages result in the development of chronic inflammatory diseases such as AD. The exact mechanism of macrophages activation in these processes is not yet completely understood. Further studies should be performed to clarify the dysregulated mechanism of macrophages activation in AD, and this would allow us to target these cells with versatile functions for therapeutic purpose and improve and control the disease. In this paper, we highlight the new findings on dysregulated function of macrophages and the importance of these cells in the pathogenesis of AD in general and the contribution of these cells in enhanced susceptibility against microbial infections in particular
