Understanding the length dependence of molecular junction thermopower
Thermopower of molecular junctions is sensitive to details in the junction
and may increase, decrease, or saturate with increasing chain length, depending
on the system. Using McConnell's theory for exponentially suppressed transport
together with a simple and easily interpretable tight binding model, we show
how these different behaviors depend on the molecular backbone and its binding
to the contacts. We distinguish between resonances from binding groups or
undercoordinated electrode atoms, and those from the periodic backbone. It is
demonstrated that while the former gives a length-independent contribution to
the thermopower, possibly changing its sign, the latter determines its length
dependence. This means that the question of which orbitals from the periodic
chain that dominate the transport should not be inferred from the sign of the
thermopower but from its length dependence. We find that the same molecular
backbone can, in principle, show four qualitatively different thermopower
trends depending on the binding group: It can be positive or negative for short
chains, and it can either increase or decrease with length
QmeQ 1.0: An open-source Python package for calculations of transport through quantum dot devices
QmeQ is an open-source Python package for numerical modeling of transport
through quantum dot devices with strong electron-electron interactions using
various approximate master equation approaches. The package provides a
framework for calculating stationary particle or energy currents driven by
differences in chemical potentials or temperatures between the leads which are
tunnel coupled to the quantum dots. The electronic structures of the quantum
dots are described by their single-particle states and the Coulomb matrix
elements between the states. When transport is treated perturbatively to lowest
order in the tunneling couplings, the possible approaches are Pauli
(classical), first-order Redfield, and first-order von Neumann master
equations, and a particular form of the Lindblad equation. When all processes
involving two-particle excitations in the leads are of interest, the
second-order von Neumann approach can be applied. All these approaches are
implemented in QmeQ. We here give an overview of the basic structure of the
package, give examples of transport calculations, and outline the range of
applicability of the different approximate approaches.Comment: 34 pages, 10 figure
Doping Incorporation in InAs nanowires characterized by capacitance measurements
Sn and Se doped InAs nanowires are characterized using a capacitance-voltage technique where the threshold voltages of nanowire capacitors with different diameter are determined and analyzed using an improved radial metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor model. This allows for a separation of doping in the core of the nanowire from the surface charge at the side facets of the nanowire. The data show that the doping level in the InAs nanowire can be controlled on the level between 2Ă1018 to 1Ă1019 cmâ3, while the surface charge density exceeds 5Ă1012 cmâ2 and is shown to increase with higher dopant precursor molar fraction
InAs nanowire metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors
We present a capacitance-voltage study for arrays of vertical InAs nanowires. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors are obtained by insulating the nanowires with a conformal 10 nm HfO2 layer and using a top Cr/Au metallization as one of the capacitor's electrodes. The described fabrication and characterization technique enables a systematic investigation of the carrier density in the nanowires as well as of the quality of the MOS interface
Effects of Coherence and Correlations on Transport through Nanostructures
This dissertation deals with the effects of coherence and correlations on transport through nanostructures. Simulations are mainly performed using the second order von Neumann approach, a method capable of dealing with these effects in the presence of higher order tunneling. We see that such effects can result in various kinds of current suppression as well as efficient thermoelectric devices. Furthermore, the second order von Neumann approach has been developed to enable noise calculations. A thorough investigation of the analytical properties of the approach has also been performed. The thesis is based on the five papers listed below. Paper I deals with the transport measurements of an InSb quantum dot and corresponding simulations. Of special interest was the discovery of a canyon of current suppression observed at the degeneracy of two different spinless dot states. Paper II provides a theoretical more detailed description of the phenomena discussed in Paper I. Paper III suggests how efficient high-power thermoelectric devices can be constructed using quantum interference of transport through two-level systems. Paper IV deals with current blockade effects that can be observed in systems with negative charging energy, e.g. dipolar systems. Paper V analyzes the virtues of our second order von Neumann formalism in detail

Temperature dependent properties of InSb and InAs nanowire field-effect transistors
We present temperature dependent electrical measurements on InSb and InAs nanowire field-effect transistors (FETs). The FETs are fabricated from InAs/InSb heterostructure nanowires, where one complete transistor is defined within each of the two segments. Both the InSb and the InAs FETs are n-type with good current saturation and low voltage operation. The off-current for the InSb FET shows a strong temperature dependence, which we attribute to a barrier lowering due to an increased band-to-band tunneling in the drain part of the channel
Total current blockade in an ultracold dipolar quantum wire.
Cold-atom systems offer a great potential for the future design of new mesoscopic quantum systems with properties that are fundamentally different from semiconductor nanostructures. Here, we investigate the quantum-gas analogue of a quantum wire and find a new scenario for the quantum transport: Attractive interactions may lead to a complete suppression of current in the low-bias range, a total current blockade. We demonstrate this effect for the example of ultracold quantum gases with dipolar interactions
