Effects of certain disinfectants and antibiotics on biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus isolated from medical devices at the University Hospital Center of Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria
Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the species of bacteria most frequently isolated from medical devices. The ability to produce biofilm is an important step in the pathogenesis of these staphylococci infection, and biofilm formation is strongly dependent on environmental conditions as well as antibiotics and disinfectants used in the treatment and prevention of infections.Methodology: In this study, 28 S. aureus isolated from medical devices at the University Hospital Center of Sidi Bel Abbes in Northwestern Algeria were tested for biofilm formation by culture on Red Congo Agar (RCA). The tube method (TM) and tissue culture plate (TCP) techniques were also used to investigate the effect of penicillin, ethanol and betadine on pre-formed biofilm.Results: Nineteen S. aureus isolates produced biofilm on the RCA and 7 produced biofilms by the tube method, 2 of which were high producer. In addition, 9 S. aureus isolates produced biofilm on polystyrene micro-plates, and in the presence of penicillin and ethanol, this number increased to 19 and 11 biofilm producing S. aureus isolates respectively. On the other hand, no biofilm was formed in the presence of betadine.Conclusion: It is important to test for biofilm formation following an imposed external constraint such as disinfectants and antibiotics in order to develop new strategies to combat bacterial biofilms but also to better control their formation.

French Title: Effets de certains désinfectants et antibiotiques sur la formation de biofilms par Staphylococcus aureus isolé à partir de dispositifs médicaux au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sidi Bel Abbès, Algérie
Contexte: Staphylococcus aureus est l'une des espèces de bactéries les plus fréquemment isolées des dispositifs médicaux. La capacité de produire du biofilm est une étape importante dans la pathogenèse de ces infections à staphylocoques, et la formation de biofilm dépend fortement des conditions environnementales ainsi que des antibiotiques et des désinfectants utilisés dans le traitement et la prévention des infections.
Méthodologie: Dans cette étude, 28 S. aureus isolés à partir de dispositifs médicaux au Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sidi Bel Abbès dans le nord-ouest de l'Algérie ont été testés pour la formation de biofilm par culture sur gélose rouge du Congo (RCA). La méthode des tubes (TM) et les techniques de plaques de culture tissulaire (TCP) ont également été utilisées pour étudier l'effet de la pénicilline, de l'éthanol et de la bétadine sur le biofilm préformé.
Résultats: Dix-neuf isolats de S. aureus ont produit un biofilm sur le RCA et 7 ont produit des biofilms par la méthode des tubes, dont 2 étaient très productifs. De plus, 9 isolats de S. aureus ont produit du biofilm sur des microplaques en polystyrène, et en présence de pénicilline et d'éthanol, ce nombre est passé à 19 et 11 isolats de S. aureus producteurs de biofilm respectivement. En revanche, aucun biofilm ne s'est formé en présence de bétadine.
Conclusion: Il est important de tester la formation de biofilm suite à une contrainte externe imposée comme les désinfectants et les antibiotiques afin de développer de nouvelles stratégies pour lutter contre les biofilms bactériens mais aussi pour mieux contrôler leur formation.

Probing the effects of a thermonuclear X-ray burst on the neutron star accretion flow with NuSTAR
Observational evidence has been accumulating that thermonuclear X-ray bursts
ignited on the surface of neutron stars influence the surrounding accretion
flow. Here, we exploit the excellent sensitivity of NuSTAR up to 79 keV to
analyze the impact of an X-ray burst on the accretion emission of the neutron
star LMXB 4U 1608-52. The ~200 s long X-ray burst occurred during a hard X-ray
spectral state, and had a peak intensity of ~30-50 per cent of the Eddington
limit with no signs of photospheric radius expansion. Spectral analysis
suggests that the accretion emission was enhanced up to a factor of ~5 during
the X-ray burst. We also applied a linear unsupervised decomposition method,
namely non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), to study this X-ray burst. We
find that the NMF performs well in characterizing the evolution of the burst
emission and is a promising technique to study changes in the underlying
accretion emission in more detail than is possible through conventional
spectral fitting. For the burst of 4U 1608-52, the NMF suggests a possible
softening of the accretion spectrum during the X-ray burst, which could
potentially be ascribed to cooling of a corona. Finally, we report a small (~3
per cent) but significant rise in the accretion emission ~0.5 h before the
X-ray burst, although it is unclear whether this was related to the X-ray burst

Student interpreters show encoding and recall differences for information in English and American Sign Language
This study investigated whether student interpreters encode and recall words differently in signed and spoken languages. Participants viewed and then recalled word lists, half of which were related through specific encoding strategies (i.e., experimental lists), and half of which lacked the availability of those strategies (i.e., control lists). Total words recalled and the temporal recall order were compared across experimental and control lists. Student interpreters utilised different strategies to remember words in English and American Sign Language (ASL), suggesting that student interpreters do not default to first-language (English) spoken strategies when encoding second-language (ASL) signed lists. However, the total number of recalled words was lower in ASL than in English despite students’ use of encoding strategies in ASL that have been shown to be adaptive to signed languages. These findings underscore the need to provide memory training to student interpreters in order to improve recall ability as part of interpreter education
To Rain or Not to Rain: Correlating GOES Flare Class and Coronal Rain Statistics
Post-flare arcades are well-known components of solar flare evolution, which
have been observed for several decades. Coronal rain, cascades of
catastrophically-cooled plasma, outline the loops and provide eye-catching
evidence of the recent flare. These events are acknowledged to be common, but
the scientific literature does not include any statistical overview documenting
just how common the phenomenon actually is. This study reviews Solar Dynamics
Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO AIA) observations of 241 flares
collected from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) database between 2011
and 2018. The flares cover the entire strength range of the C, M, and X GOES
classes, and are distributed evenly across the SDO-observed majority of Solar
Cycle 24. We find that post-flare arcade rain occurs for nearly all X and most
M-class flares, but that it tapers off rapidly within C-class flares. There
appears to be a cut-off point around C5, below which the occurrence of
post-flare arcade rain drops significantly. There is also a general positive
correlation between GOES class and the average duration of post-flare rain
events. Post-flare arcade rain events in C-class flares appear to track with
the sunspot number, providing a potential new tool for estimating, if not
predicting, solar cycle strength. Furthermore, condensations appear to be
suppressed in the shortest-length arcade loops of any class observed,
suggesting that active region heating is height-constrained. These results open
up further avenues for future research, including new methods to estimate
energy deposition and to gain greater insight into steady active region
heating
Prospects for the measurement of the electron electric dipole moment using YbF
We discuss an experiment underway at Imperial College London to measure the
permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron using a molecular beam
of YbF. We describe the measurement method, which uses a combination of laser
and radiofrequency resonance techniques to detect the spin precession of the
YbF molecule in a strong electric field. We pay particular attention to the
analysis scheme and explore some of the possible systematic effects which might
mimic the EDM signal. Finally, we describe technical improvements which should
increase the sensitivity by more than an order of magnitude over the current

Revealing the X-ray Variability of AGN with Principal Component Analysis
We analyse a sample of 26 active galactic nuclei with deep XMM-Newton
observations, using principal component analysis (PCA) to find model
independent spectra of the different variable components. In total, we identify
at least 12 qualitatively different patterns of spectral variability, involving
several different mechanisms, including five sources which show evidence of
variable relativistic reflection (MCG-6-30-15, NGC 4051, 1H 0707-495, NGC 3516
and Mrk 766) and three which show evidence of varying partial covering neutral
absorption (NGC 4395, NGC 1365, and NGC 4151). In over half of the sources
studied, the variability is dominated by changes in a power law continuum, both
in terms of changes in flux and power law index, which could be produced by
propagating fluctuations within the corona. Simulations are used to find unique
predictions for different physical models, and we then attempt to qualitatively
match the results from the simulations to the behaviour observed in the real
data. We are able to explain a large proportion of the variability in these
sources using simple models of spectral variability, but more complex models
may be needed for the remainder. We have begun the process of building up a
library of different principal components, so that spectral variability in AGN
can quickly be matched to physical processes. We show that PCA can be an
extremely powerful tool for distinguishing different patterns of variability in
AGN, and that it can be used effectively on the large amounts of high-quality

Investigation of slug mitigation: self-lifting approach in a deepwater oil field
Slug flow is a flow assurance issue that staggers production and, in some cases, 'kills the flow' of the well. Severe slugging, a type of slugging which usually occurs at the base of the riser column, causes large amplitudes in the fluctuation of pressure within the riser column and consequently damages equipment placed topside. An adaptation of a novel concept to slug mitigation: the self-lifting model, is presented. This model presents variations to the internal diameter of the self-lift bypass to produce effective mitigation to severe slugging
An empirically derived framework of logistics management strategy
The purpose of this paper is to present an empirically derived framework for Logistics Management and discuss how it integrates organization’s short-term objectives with the need to respond to the complex external environment. Organizational theory, strategic planning and logistics management literature were reviewed carefully in identifying the conceptual support for the derived framework of logistics management and organizational competitiveness. The proposed generalized framework demonstrates that Logistics Management Strategy has the strongest positive effect on Organizational Competitiveness when it is mediated by Logistics Coordination Effectiveness and Customer Service Commitment. Overall Logistics Strategy is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for increased organizational competitiveness. If the Overall Logistics Strategy is accompanied by (a) effective logistics coordination and (b) customer service commitment then organization competitiveness is likely to be greater. This conceptual study contributes to the field by presenting a generalized framework to improve researcher and practitioner understanding of the role Logistics Management in Organizational Competitiveness. This study integrates previous research and thought domains to develop a generalized framework that guides our understanding of the role of Logistics Management and its consequences on Organizational Competitiveness
An investigation on the impact fatigue characteristics of valve leaves for small hermetic reciprocating compressors in a new automated test system
This paper presents an investigation on the impact fatigue characteristics of valve leaves that are prevalently used in hermetic reciprocating compressors especially for the household type refrigerators. A unique automated impact fatigue test system has been designed and produced, which enables to carry out impact fatigue tests of the compressor valve leaves under the desired impact velocities. The test system serves investigations on the impact fatigue characteristics with the ability of crack detection and as the subsequent step of automatically terminating the test. The crack detection technique incorporates a non-contact actuation, a data acquisition system and a microphone. The investigation relates the impact fatigue lifetime of the valve leaves with the impact velocity, asymmetrical impact, operation temperature, material type (carbon strip steel, stainless strip steel and new stainless strip steel grade) and tumbling operation duration. Microscopic and metallographic observations were performed on the specimens. It was observed that the crack initiated at the edge of the valve leaves on the contact surface of valve leaf and vale plate and a particle is torn away from the edge before propagation. As the crack propagates, branching along the crack path is caused by the geometrical shape and stress waves on the valve leaves. The investigation and introduced test system guide the design optimization of valve leaves in terms of compressor performance due to energy consumption and lifetime of the valve leaf
