    The Weak Parity-Violating Pion-Nucleon Coupling (Revised)

    We use QCD sum rules to obtain the weak parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant fπNNf_{\pi NN}. We find that fπNN2×108f_{\pi NN}\approx 2\times 10^{-8}, about an order of magnitude smaller than the ``best estimates'' based on quark models. This result follows from the cancellation between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD processes not found in quark models, but explicit in the QCD sum rule method.     Contrasting patterns of isotype-1 β-tubulin allelic diversity in Haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei in the southern USA are consistent with a model of localised emergence of benzimidazole resistance

    The benzimidazoles are one of the most important broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug classes for parasitic nematode control in domestic animals and humans. They have been widely used in livestock, particularly in small ruminants for over 40 years. This has resulted in widespread resistance in small ruminant gastrointestinal nematode parasite species, especially Haemonchus contortus. Benzimidazole resistance mutations have also been reported in Haemonchus placei, but only at low frequencies, suggesting resistance is at a much earlier stage of emergence than is the case for H. contortus. Here, we investigate the haplotype diversity of isotype-1 β-tubulin benzimidazole resistance mutations and the population genetic structure of H. contortus and H. placei populations from sheep and cattle from the southern USA. Microsatellite genotyping revealed a low level of genetic differentiation in six H.placei and seven H. contortus populations examined. This is consistent with several previous studies from other regions, mainly in H. contortus, supporting a model of high gene flow between parasite populations. There was a single F200Y(TAC) haplotype present in all six H. placei populations across Georgia, Florida and Arkansas. In contrast, there were at least two different F200Y(TAC) haplotypes (up to four) and two different F167Y(TAC) haplotypes across the seven H. contortus populations studied. These results provide further evidence to support a model for benzimidazole resistance in Haemonchus spp, in which resistance mutations arise from a single, or the small number of locations, in a region during the early phases of emergence, and subsequently spread due to animal movement

    We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of different frequencies as a new time-dependent model for investigating quantum dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the frame of statistical ensemble of quantum trajectories in quantum state diffusion approach. Quantum dynamical manifestation of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement are studied by numerical simulation of ensemble averaged Wigner function and von Neumann entropy.Comment: 9 pages, 18 figure

    Parity nonconserving cold neutron-parahydrogen interactions

    Three pion dominated observables of the parity nonconserving interactions between the cold neutrons and parahydrogen are calculated. The transversely polarized neutron spin rotation, unpolarized neutron longitudinal polarization, and photon-asymmetry of the radiative polarized neutron capture are considered. For the numerical evaluation of the observables, the strong interactions are taken into account by the Reid93 potential and the parity nonconserving interactions by the DDH model along with the two-pion exchange.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    We study the reaction NNNNΦNN \to NN \Phi slightly above the threshold within an extended one-boson exchange model which also accounts for uuduud knock-out. It is shown that polarization observables, like the beam-target asymmetry, are sensible quantities for identifying a ssˉs \bar s admixture in the nucleon wave function on the few per cent level.Comment: 11 LaTeX pages including 4 ps figure

    People's Perception of Domestic Service Robots: Same Household, Same Opinion?

    The study presented in this paper examined people’s perception of domestic service robots by means of an ethnographic study. We investigated initial reactions of nine households who lived with a Roomba vacuum cleaner robot over a two week period. To explore people’s attitude and how it changed over time, we used a recurring questionnaire that was filled at three different times, integrated in 18 semi-structured qualitative interviews. Our findings suggest that being part of a specific household has an impact how each individual household member perceives the robot. We interpret that, even though individual experiences with the robot might differ from one other, a household shares a specific opinion about the robot. Moreover our findings also indicate that how people perceived Roomba did not change drastically over the two week period

    Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV

    We present the first measurement of directed flow (v1v_1) at RHIC. v1v_1 is found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities η\eta from -1.2 to 1.2, then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range 2.4<η<42.4 < |\eta| < 4. The latter observation is similar to data from NA49 if the SPS rapidities are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS. Back-to-back jets emitted out-of-plane are found to be suppressed more if compared to those emitted in-plane, which is consistent with {\it jet quenching}. Using the scalar product method, we systematically compared azimuthal correlations from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions.
