Chemical Composition of the Stem Oil of Aristolochia indica L.
Essential oil from dry matured stem of Aristolochia indica Linn. family Aristolochiaceae was investigated by GC
and GC/MS. A total of 15 compounds were identified, representing 91.2% of the total oil. The major constituents of
oil were trans-pinocarveol (24.2%), a-pinene (16.4%) and pinocarvone (14.2%)
Production potential of Plumbago zeylanica L. under different harvest schedules and crop geometry
A field experiment on Plumbago zeylanica with three plant densities, namely, 4.9 m-2, 2.7 m-2 and 1.2 m-2 and three harvesting schedules, namely, after first year, second year and third year, was conducted during 1999-2001 at Jorhat (Assam). Plant density significantly influenced number of branches plant-1, shoot and root biomass plant-1 and total yield of roots ha-1. Plant height was found to reduce with the age of the plant. The total dry'root yield was maximum in the plant density 2.7 m-' (5.2 t ha-1). The yield attributing characters, namely, number of branches plant-1 (25.6), shoot biomass plant-1 (408.2 g), root biomass plant-1 (607.4 g) and total root yield (7.1 t ha-1) were maximum when harvested at third year. Maximum phenol, carbohydrate and protein contents were recorded in roots (5.06%, 31.70% and 13.04%, respectively) and leaves (3.40%, 10.60% and 7.84 %, respectively) of plants harvested during the third year.
 
Yield and quality of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) grown in Nagaland, India
Multilocational trials conducted at N agaland, India, in ginger (Zingiber officinale) indicated significant differences in growth characteristics and yield components among the cultivars at various locations. The yield was very low (4.8-9.3 t/ha) and fibre content high (6.7-9.6%) at all locations. Yield and quality of ginger grown in .Wokha, Mon, Mokokchang and Tuensang districts were superior to the ginger from other districts of N agaland.
 
Trends in self-reported prevalence and management of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes in Swiss adults, 1997-2007
Switzerland has a low mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases, but little is known regarding prevalence and management of cardiovascular risk factors (CV RFs: hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes) in the general population. In this study, we assessed 10-year trends in self-reported prevalence and management of cardiovascular risk factors in Switzerland.
data from three national health interview surveys conducted between 1997 and 2007 in representative samples of the Swiss adult population (49,261 subjects overall). Self-reported CV RFs prevalence, treatment and control levels were computed. The sample was weighted to match the sex - and age distribution, geographical location and nationality of the entire adult population of Switzerland.
self-reported prevalence of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes increased from 22.1%, 11.9% and 3.3% in 1997 to 24.1%, 17.4% and 4.8% in 2007, respectively. Prevalence of self-reported treatment among subjects with CV RFs also increased from 52.1%, 18.5% and 50.0% in 1997 to 60.4%, 38.8% and 53.3% in 2007 for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes, respectively. Self-reported control levels increased from 56.4%, 52.9% and 50.0% in 1997 to 80.6%, 75.1% and 53.3% in 2007 for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes, respectively. Finally, screening during the last 12 months increased from 84.5%, 86.5% and 87.4% in 1997 to 94.0%, 94.6% and 94.1% in 2007 for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes, respectively.

Exploring evidence-policy linkages in health research plans: A case study from six countries
The complex evidence-policy interface in low and middle income country settings is receiving increasing attention. Future Health Systems (FHS): Innovations for Equity, is a research consortium conducting health systems explorations in six Asian and African countries: Bangladesh, India, China, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Nigeria. The cross-country research consortium provides a unique opportunity to explore the research-policy interface. Three key activities were undertaken during the initial phase of this five-year project. First, key considerations in strengthening evidence-policy linkages in health system research were developed by FHS researchers through workshops and electronic communications. Four key considerations in strengthening evidence-policy linkages are postulated: development context; research characteristics; decision-making processes; and stakeholder engagement. Second, these four considerations were applied to research proposals in each of the six countries to highlight features in the research plans that potentially strengthen the research-policy interface and opportunities for improvement. Finally, the utility of the approach for setting research priorities in health policy and systems research was reflected upon. These three activities yielded interesting findings. First, developmental consideration with four dimensions – poverty, vulnerabilities, capabilities, and health shocks – provides an entry point in examining research-policy interfaces in the six settings. Second, research plans focused upon on the ground realities in specific countries strengthens the interface. Third, focusing on research prioritized by decision-makers, within a politicized health arena, enhances chances of research influencing action. Lastly, early and continued engagement of multiple stakeholders, from local to national levels, is conducive to enhanced communication at the interface. The approach described has four main utilities: first, systematic analyses of research proposals using key considerations ensure such issues are incorporated into research proposals; second, the exact meaning, significance, and inter-relatedness of these considerations can be explored within the research itself; third, cross-country learning can be enhanced; and finally, translation of evidence into action may be facilitated. Health systems research proposals in low and middle income countries should include reflection on transferring research findings into policy. Such deliberations may be informed by employing the four key considerations suggested in this paper in analyzing research proposals
What is the Role of Community Capabilities for Maternal Health? An Exploration of Community Capabilities as Determinants to Institutional Deliveries in Bangladesh, India, and Uganda
Background:
While community capabilities are recognized as important factors in developing resilient health systems and communities, appropriate metrics for these have not yet been developed. Furthermore, the role of community capabilities on access to maternal health services has been underexplored. In this paper, we summarize the development of a community capability score based on the Future Health System (FHS) project’s experience in Bangladesh, India, and Uganda, and, examine the role of community capabilities as determinants of institutional delivery in these three contexts.
Methods:
We developed a community capability score using a pooled dataset containing cross-sectional household survey data from Bangladesh, India, and Uganda. Our main outcome of interest was whether the woman delivered in an institution. Our predictor variables included the community capability score, as well as a series of previously identified determinants of maternal health. We calculate both population-averaged effects (using GEE logistic regression), as well as sub-national level effects (using a mixed effects model).
Results:
Our final sample for analysis included 2775 women, of which 1238 were from Bangladesh, 1199 from India, and 338 from Uganda. We found that individual-level determinants of institutional deliveries, such as maternal education, parity, and ante-natal care access were significant in our analysis and had a strong impact on a woman’s odds of delivering in an institution. We also found that, in addition to individual-level determinants, greater community capability was significantly associated with higher odds of institutional delivery. For every additional capability, the odds of institutional delivery would increase by up to almost 6 %.
Conclusion:
Individual-level characteristics are strong determinants of whether a woman delivered in an institution. However, we found that community capability also plays an important role, and should be taken into account when designing programs and interventions to support institutional deliveries. Consideration of individual factors and the capabilities of the communities in which people live would contribute to the vision of supporting people-centered approaches to health
