The significance of information visualisation based on the symbolic semantics of Peking Opera Painted Faces (POPF)

    Get PDF
Peking Opera as a branch of Chinese traditional cultures and arts has a very distinct colourful facial make-up for all actors in the stage performance. Such make-up is stylised in typical cultural elements which all combined together to form the painted faces to describe and symbolise the background and characteristic of specific roles. The Peking Opera Painted Faces (POPF) was taken as an example to study the information visualisation and transmission, to see how information and meanings can be effectively expressed through the colourful visual elements. In order to identify the state-of-the-art in the related Culture Inspired Design as one of the design principles, the literature resources including illustrations of POPF were investigated, and also the semantic features and elements of other similar forms of modern design which has close connection with multiple aspects of social life. The study has proved that the visual elements of POPF played the most effective role in the information transmittion. Future application of this culture resource may include product design, interaction design, system design and service design around the world

Analysis of a particle antiparticle description of a soliton cellular automaton

We present a derivation of a formula that gives dynamics of an integrable cellular automaton associated with crystal bases. This automaton is related to type D affine Lie algebra and contains usual box-ball systems as a special case. The dynamics is described by means of such objects as carriers, particles, and antiparticles. We derive it from an analysis of a recently obtained formula of the combinatorial R (an intertwiner between tensor products of crystals) that was found in a study of geometric crystals.Comment: LaTeX, 21 pages, 2 figure

Control and dynamics of a flexible spacecraft during stationkeeping maneuvers

    Get PDF
A case study of a spacecraft having flexible solar arrays is presented. A stationkeeping attitude control mode using both earth and rate gyro reference signals and a flexible vehicle dynamics modeling and implementation is discussed. The control system is designed to achieve both pointing accuracy and structural mode stability during stationkeeping maneuvers. Reduction of structural mode interactions over the entire mode duration is presented. The control mode using a discrete time observer structure is described to show the convergence of the spacecraft attitude transients during Delta-V thrusting maneuvers without preloading thrusting bias to the onboard control processor. The simulation performance using the three axis, body stabilized nonlinear dynamics is provided. The details of a five body dynamics model are discussed. The spacecraft is modeled as a central rigid body having cantilevered flexible antennas, a pair of flexible articulated solar arrays, and to gimballed momentum wheels. The vehicle is free to undergo unrestricted rotations and translations relative to inertial space. A direct implementation of the equations of motion is compared to an indirect implementation that uses a symbolic manipulation software to generate rigid body equations

    Gauge/String-Gravity Duality and Froissart Bound

The gauge/string-gravity duality correspondence opened renewed hope and possibility to address some of the fundamental and non-perturbative QCD problems in particle physics, such as hadron spectrum and Regge behavior of the scattering amplitude at high energies. One of the most fundamental and long-standing problem is the high energy behavior of total cross-sections. According to a series of exhaustive tests by the COMPETE group, (1). total cross-sections have a universal Heisenberg behavior in energy corresponding to the maximal energy behavior allowed by the Froissart bound, i.e., A+Bln2(s/s0)A + B ln^2 (s/s_0) with B∼0.32mbB \sim 0.32 mb and s0∼34.41GeV2s_0 \sim 34.41 GeV^2 for all reactions, and (2). the factorization relation among σpp,even,σγp,andσγγ\sigma_{pp, even}, \sigma_{\gamma p}, and \sigma_{\gamma \gamma} is well satisfied by experiments. I discuss the recent interesting application of the gauge/string-gravity duality of AdS/CFTAdS/CFT correspondence with a deformed background metric so as to break the conformal symmetry that can lead to the Heisenberg behavior of rising total cross-sections, and present some preliminary results on the high energy QCD from Planckian scattering in AdSAdS and black-hole production.Comment: 10 pages, Presented to the Coral Gables Conference 2003, Launching of BelleE\'poque in High Energy Physics and Cosmology, 17 - 21 December 2003, Fort Lauderdale, Florid

    Dark Matter from Early Decays

Two leading dark matter candidates from supersymmetry and other theories of physics beyond the standard model are WIMPs and weak scale gravitinos. If the lightest stable particle is a gravitino, then a WIMP will decay into it with a natural lifetime of order a month ~ M_{pl}^2/M_{weak}^3. We show that if the bulk of dark matter today came from decays of neutral particles with lifetimes of order a year or smaller, then it could lead to a reduction in the amount of small scale substructure, less concentrated halos and constant density cores in the smallest mass halos. Such beneficial effects may therefore be realized naturally, as discussed by Cembranos, Feng, Rajaraman, and Takayama, in the case of supersymmetry.Comment: Matches version accepted for publication in PRD. Low scale Seesaw model and Lepton Flavor Violating Rare B Decays

We study lepton flavor number violating rare B decays, b→slh±ll∓b \to s l_h^{\pm} l_l^{\mp}, in a seesaw model with low scale singlet Majorana neutrinos motivated by the resonant leptogenesis scenario. The branching ratios of inclusive decays b→slh±llˉ∓ b \to s l_h^{\pm} \bar{l_l}^{\mp} with two almost degenerate singlet neutrinos at TeV scale are investigated in detail. We find that there exists a class of seesaw model in which the branching fractions of b→sτμ b \to s \tau \mu and τ→μγ\tau \to \mu \gamma can be as large as 10−1010^{-10} and 10−910^{-9} within the reach of Super B factories, respectively, without being in conflict with neutrino mixings and mass squared difference of neutrinos from neutrino data, invisible decay width of ZZ and the present limit of Br(μ→eγ)Br(\mu \to e \gamma).Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

Cosmological Family Asymmetry and CP violation

We discuss how the cosmological baryon asymmetry can be achieved by the lepton family asymmetries of heavy Majorana neutrino decays and they are related to CP violation in neutrino oscillation, in the minimal seesaw model with two heavy Majorana neutrinos. We derive the most general formula for CP violation in neutrino oscillation in terms of the heavy Majorana masses and Yukawa mass term. It is shown that the formula is very useful to classify several models in which e−e-, μ−\mu- and τ−\tau-leptogenesis can be separately realized and to see how they are connected with low energy CP violaton. To make the models predictive, we take texture with two zeros in the Dirac neutrino Yukawa matrix. In particular, we find some interesting cases in which CP violation in neutrino oscillation can happen while lepton family asymmetries do not exist at all. On the contrary, we can find e−e-, μ−\mu- and τ−\tau-leptogenesis scenarios in which the cosmological CP violation and low energy CP violation measurable via neutrino oscillations are very closely related to each other. By determining the allowed ranges of the parameters in the models, we predict the sizes of CP violation in neutrino oscillation and ∣Ve3MNS∣|V_{e3}^{MNS}|. Finally, the leptonic unitarity triangles are reconstructed.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures A figure caption correcte

Neutrino Oscillations and Lepton Flavor Mixing

In view of the recent announcement on non-zero neutrino mass from Super-Kamiokande experiment, it would be very timely to investigate all the possible scenarios on masses and mixings of light neutrinos. Recently suggested mass matrix texture for the quark CKM mixing, which can be originated from the family permutation symmetry and its suitable breakings, is assumed for the neutrino mass matrix and determined by the four combinations of solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino data and cosmological hot dark matter bound as input constraints. The charged-lepton mass matrix is assumed to be diagonal so that the neutrino mixing matrix can be identified directly as the lepton flavor mixing matrix and no CP invariance violation originates from the leptonic sector. The results favor hierarchical patterns for the neutrino masses, which follow from the case when either solar-atmospheric data or solar-HDM constraints are used.Comment: Latex, 9 page
