The slot car stig: Performance and consistency of a slot car driven by a heuristic algorithm in an embedded microcontroller

    Get PDF
We present theory and measured performance of an autonomous slot car driven by a heuristic algorithm on a typical track. The hardware consists of a PIC 8-bit single-chip microcontroller with various sensors driving a standard permanent-magnet (PM) brushed dc (BDC) motor in a mechanically-standard Scalextric platform. We present some interesting results concerning the relative difficulty of apparently-balanced lanes on a track. The car achieves optimum lap times with high consistency. Measured performance agrees with theoretical expectation. The consistency of performance allows the impact of experimental changes to be reliably assessed

NAI-SIG: Natural And Ideal Studies In Geometry

    Get PDF
Architecture through historical evidence seeks to find a straightforward development strategy for designing a place around Phenomenological views. Humans are one moment in time and space, seeking interactions between our senses and our environment. We are able to shape our reality over time, utilizing the characteristics given to us by history and nature. The Geometric Discipline assessed, explores how natural forces seen as vectors are applied in Different rational and irrational numbers. Natural structures and forms are looked at in a sensible fashion to give logic to our environment for design. The divide of design analysis for the hexagon form in different variables, looks at parametric design and where rules stem from. Mimics of Nature, systems for Nature and Mans representation of Nature will probe the ideas supplied by our surroundings. The Hexagon is seen as an Ideal form for Nature and Man to use to design some of the most beautiful structure seen from the Sagrada Familia to the Redwood forest. The ability for us to design is based around rules and regulations that allow us to design vectors into structures. With modern technology the Coordinate system used by nature can be replicated to create elaborate structures and systems very simply Designed. Fabrication will follow Natural Form and Ideal Form to design a structure built from the Hexagons variables. Looking at the Hexagon as a sixth strand of design, an enclosure will be produced that investigates Nature, Ideal Forms, Space, Human Interaction and the underlining strategies from the hexagon. Application of the Structure will appeal to how the hexagon is made in nature and how simple vectors create forms. The mix media of biological structure and architectural language will develop a new interaction to stand as an example of a natural structure reacting to its origin

Addressing hindfoot arthritis with concomitant tibial malunion or nonunion with retrograde tibiotalocalcaneal nailing: a novel treatment approach.

BACKGROUND: Tibial malunions and nonunions are associated with degenerative changes about the ankle. A comprehensive literature review revealed no articles discussing treatment options for patients with tibial shaft malunion and ipsilateral ankle arthritis. The aim of our study was to evaluate a series of patients in whom tibial osteotomy and retrograde tibiotalocalcaneal nailing were used to treat both tibial deformity and ankle osteoarthritis. METHODS: Twenty-five patients underwent retrograde tibiotalocalcaneal nailing with concomitant realignment tibial osteotomy with takedown of the nonunion or malunion in a single procedure. All surgical procedures were performed by a single surgeon at a single institution. Baseline patient characteristics (age, sex, body mass index [BMI], preoperative diagnosis, and prior surgical procedures) were recorded. Data including visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores (0 to 10, with 0 indicating no pain and 10 indicating worst pain) and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot (AOFAS-AH) scores were prospectively collected at the preoperative evaluation and the time of final follow-up, and patients were asked about their final satisfaction. Preoperative VAS scores averaged 8.3 (range, 7 to 10) of 10, which improved to an average of 2.8 (range, 0 to 6) at the time of final follow-up (p \u3c 0.01). The preoperative AOFAS-AH scores averaged 43 (range, 18 to 62) of 100 and improved to 76 (range, 57 to 84) at the time of follow-up (p = 0.022). Twenty-one patients (84%) stated that they were extremely satisfied with the result of the procedure, three patients (12%) were satisfied, and one patient (4%) with a poor result was unsatisfied. CONCLUSIONS: Tibial malunion or nonunion with concomitant hindfoot arthritis can be addressed with a single-stage procedure consisting of tibial osteotomy and retrograde intramedullary nailing for correction of the angular deformity and hindfoot fusion. This procedure provides a viable alternative to multiplanar external fixation or a staged procedure addressing the nonunion or angular deformity and the hindfoot arthritis separately.
