    Multistate polarization addressing using one single beam in an azo polymer film

    Peculiar light-matter interactions can break the rule that a single beam polarization can address only two states in an optical memory device. Multistate storage of a single beam polarization is achieved using self-induced surface diffraction gratings in a photo-active polymer material. The grating orientation follows the incident light beam polarization direction.     Quadrature-based models for multiphase and turbulent reacting flows

    The simulation of physical systems requires accurate and robust methods with relatively low cost and it is still the challenge in many applications of engineering processes, specifically in multiphase flow systems. Soot formation, distribution of the aerosols in the atmosphere, reactive precipitation, and combustion modeling are some examples of these processes. Computer simulations of theses systems require a model that can be adapted to that reality. In this study, a quadrature based method of moments (QBMM) is used to address the problems related to the reactive multiphase flow systems. First, the log-normal kernel density function is implemented into the extended quadrature method of moments (Ln-EQMOM). Ln-EQMOM is verified reconstructing the NDF and calculating the moments of a distribution obtained by the linear combination of two log-normal distributions. Later, this numerical procedure is used for problems of aggregation and breakup of fine particles to solve the population balance equation (PBE). The results are compared to the rigorous solutions reported for the cases under consideration \citep{vanni2000}. Finally, the method is verified using two analytically known problems (\textit{e.g.} coalescence and condensation). In comparison to EQMOM with Γ\Gamma kernel density function \citep{yuan2012}, Ln-EQMOM is faster in terms of computations and it preserves the moments more accurately. Then EQMOM with β\beta kernel density function is implemented to approximate the solution of the transport equation for the composition probability density function (PDF) of a passive scalar using the Fokker-Planck model to treat the molecular mixing term. The results then compared in a similar condition to those obtained with direct numerical simulation (DNS). The L2L_2 norm of the PDF is reported for two test cases that have been considered. Later the new approach is introduced to address the problems includes the mixing and reaction. Conditional quadrature method of moments (CQMOM) and using the joint composition PDF for the mixture fraction and progress variables, it is possible to address the problems with two consecutive competitive reactions, one reaction and fast reaction, all including the mixing of reactants. direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM) also expressed for the joint composition PDF. Results obtained with CQMOM and DQMOM are compared with each other. Finally, the CQMOM approach for mixing problems was tested considering two consecutive competitive reactions to verify the implementation and validate the proposed approach. Coupled mixing-PBE approach was then used to investigate polymer aggregation in a multi-inlet vortex reactor (MIVR), typically used to perform flash nanoprecipitation for the production of nanoparticles used in pharmaceutical applications

    Co-evolution path model : how enterprises as complex systems survive on the edge of chaos

    In this theoretical paper, we introduce and describe a model, and demonstrate its origins from the disciplines of Enterprise Architecture, cybernetics and systems theory. We use cybernetic thinking to develop a &lsquo;Co-evolution Path Model&rsquo; that describes how enterprises as complex systems co-evolve with their complex environments. The model re-interprets Stafford Beer&rsquo;s Viable System Model, and also uses the theorem of the &lsquo;good regulator&rsquo; of Conant and Ashby, exemplifying how various complexity management theories could be synthesised into a cybernetic theory of Enterprise Architecture, using concepts from the generalisation of EA frameworks.<br /

    Crossing the Communication Barrier in Global Software Development Projects via Global Software Development Brokers

    As the key stakeholders in Global Software Development (GSD) projects are distributed across geographical locations, many GSD projects suffer from a communication barrier, which exists due to language-, cultural-, time zone (and possibly other) differences among key stakeholders. This barrier not only increases communication cost, it also decreases the efficiency and quality of stakeholder communication, adding extra risks to these projects, and decreasing the probability of success. So far, there is no simple solution to this problem. Using the Collaborative Networks paradigm, this paper introduces the concept of ‘Global Software Development Collaborative Network’ (GSD-CN) as a formal model to analyse communication cost and quality. The paper proposes a new entity (role) called Global Software Development Broker (GSDB). We argue and demonstrate in an example that the proposed GSDBs will (a) simplify the network structure, (b) decrease communication cost, and (c) improve communication quality – consequently increasing the probability of success of GSD projects

    Nonlocal communication with photoinduced structures at the surface of a polymer film

    Nonlocal communication between two laser light beams is experimented in a photochromic polymer thin films. Information exchange between the beams is mediated by the self-induction of a surface relief pattern. The exchanged information is related to the pitch and orientation of the grating.     Global Software Development: Measuring, Approximating and Reducing the Complexity of Global Software Development Using Extended Axiomatic Design Theory

    This paper considers GSD projects as designed artefacts, and proposes the application of an Extended Axiomatic Design theory to reduce their complexity in order to increase the probability of project success. Using an upper bound estimation of the Kolmogorov complexity of the so-called ‘design matrix’ (as a proxy of Information Content as a complexity measure) we demonstrate on two hypothetical examples how good and bad designs of GSD planning compare in terms of complexity. We also demonstrate how to measure and calculate the ‘structural’ complexity of GSD projects and show that by satisfying all design axioms this ‘structural’ complexity could be minimised

    Light mediated emergence of surface patterns in azopolymers at low temperatures

    Polymer thin films doped with azobenzene molecules do have the ability to organize themselves in spontaneous surface relief gratings (SRG) under irradiation with a single polarized beam. To shed some light in this still unexplained phenomenon, we use a new method that permits us to access experimentally the very first steps of the pattern formation process. Decreasing the temperature, we slow down the formation and organization of patterns, due to the large increase of the viscosity and relaxation time of the azopolymer. As a result decreasing the temperature allows us to access and study much shorter time scales,in the physical mechanisms underlying the pattern formation, than previously reported. We find that the patterns organize themselves in sub-structures which size increase with the temperature, following the diffusion coefficient evolution of the material. That result suggests that the pattern formation and organization is mainly governed by diffusive processes, in agreement with some theories of the SRG formation. Decreasing further the temperature we observe the emergence of small voids located at the junction of the sub-structures.Comment: 6 figures, 13 pages

    Ordered monolayer gold nano-urchin structures and their size induced control for high gas sensing performance

    The synthesis of ordered monolayers of gold nano-urchin (Au-NU) nanostructures with controlled size, directly on thin films using a simple electrochemical method is reported in this study. In order to demonstrate one of the vast potential applications, the developed Au-NUs were formed on the electrodes of transducers (QCM) to selectively detect low concentrations of elemental mercury (Hg0) vapor. It was found that the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor device is enhanced by increasing the size of the nanospikes on the Au-NUs. The Au-NU-12 min QCM (Au-NUs with nanospikes grown on it for a period of 12 min) had the best performance in terms of transducer based Hg0 vapor detection. The sensor had 98% accuracy, 92% recovery, 96% precision (repeatability) and significantly, showed the highest sensitivity reported to date, resulting in a limit of detection (LoD) of only 32 μg/m3 at 75 °C. When compared to the control counterpart, the accuracy and sensitivity of the Au-NU-12 min was enhanced by ~2 and ~5 times, respectively. The results demonstrate the excellent activity of the developed materials which can be applied to a range of applications due to their long range order, tunable size and ability to form directly on thin-films

    Cognitive ability experiment with photosensitive organic molecular thin films

    We present an optical experiment which permits to evaluate the information exchange necessary to self-induce cooperatively a well-organized pattern in a randomly activated molecular assembly. A low-power coherent beam carrying polarization and wavelength information is used to organize a surface relief grating on a photochromic polymer thin film which is photo-activated by a powerful incoherent beam. We demonstrate experimentally that less than 1% of the molecules possessing information cooperatively transmit it to the entire photo-activated polymer film.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
