Diouf, Sylviane A. â Dreams of Africa in Alabama.â The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America
In the introductory essay to his 1988 edited collection entitled The Social Life of Things, Arjun Appadurai observed that, âeven though from a theoretical point of view human actors encode things with significance, from a methodological point of view it is the things-in-motion that illuminate their human and social contextsâ (p. 5).â Appaduraiâs thesis could be fruitfully applied to slave ships as major components of the material culture of the slave trade.â They are indeed âthings-in-motionâ..
Amselle, Jean-Loup & Sibeud, Emmanuelle, eds. -- Maurice Delafosse.
African historiography has contributed to the renewal of the problematics, methods and material at the disposal of historians and literary critics in general. Studies on uchronia, while showing great interest in the writing of history and its possible diversions, have nevertheless given little space to Africa. This essay proposes a rereading of two uchronian fictions, namely âTribal Scarsâ (1974), a short story by Ousmane SembĂšne, and my epic poem, La QuĂȘte infinie de lâautre rive (2011). The essay also suggests that the âuchronian corpusâ within African literature would, if better known, enrich reflection on the specificities of this genre

On crossings
With this interview, the poetess explores what it means to write stories of people « without histories ». Through the short story she gives to Multitudes, entitled « without history/ies », and through her book La quĂȘte infinie de lâautre rive (2011), she analyses the power of « consideration » carried by literature, linking Marielle MacĂ©âs thoughts with Edouard Glissantâs, among others
