    Modeling the Dynamic Effects of Discourse: Principles and Frameworks

    International audienceWhen studying the meaning of natural language expressions, sentence level provides a natural entry point. Its relevance of course depends on the focus we want to put on the meaning: as related to thought, to communication, to truth, etc. In this paper, we concentrate on the model theoretic view on meaning, in particular via first order logic representation. More specifically, we present phenomena that illustrate the challenges raised by discourse to truth-conditional semantics and compositionality. We show that proposals to address theses challenges rely on the additional device of contexts and on the way sentences can access and modify these contexts. This capability is usually referred to as the context change potential of a sentence. Depending on the phenomenon, the contexts need to represent different kinds of information: propositions, discourse referents, and variations on these elements. We also show that taking into account the rhetorical structure of discourse leads to even richer structuring of the context. Parallel to the presentation of the phenomena, we concentrate on formalisms giving an account of the dynamics of discourse. We introduce the well established formalisms of Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) Dynamic Predicate Logic (DPL) , and the more recently developed approach based on continuation semantics. Finally, we introduce Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT) that combines the effects of dynamics and discourse structure.La phrase représente un niveau d'entrée naturel dans l'étude du sens des expressions de la langue naturelle. Sa pertinence dépend bien sûr de la perspective que l'on souhaite mettre en avant sur le sens : celle relative à la pensée, celle relative à la communication, celle relative à la valeur de vérité... Dans cet article, nous nous concentrons sur la perspective donnée au sens par la théorie des modèles, en particulier par la représentation avec la logique du premier ordre. Plus spécifiquement, nous présentons des phénomènes illustrant les difficultés posées par le discours à la sémantique vériconditionnelle et à la compositionalité. Nous montrons que les propositions pour répondre à ces difficultés reposent sur l'utilisation de contextes et de la manière dons les phrases peuvent accéder à ce contexte et le modifier. Ce mécanisme est généralement appelé potentiel de changement du contexte d'une phrase. Suivant le phénomène considéré, le contexte doit représenter différents types d'informations : des propositions, des référents de discours, et des variations de ces éléments. Nous montrons également que la prise en compte de la structure rhétorique du discours conduit à une représentation encore plus riche du contexte. Parallèlement à l'exposé de ces phénomènes, nous présentons différents formalismes qui en rendent compte. Nous présentons la théorie des représentations discursives (DRT), de la logique des prédicats dynamique (DPL), ainsi que l'approche fondée sur les continuations proposée plus récemment.     Measurement of the longitudinal diffusion of ionization electrons in the MicroBooNE detector

    Abstract: Accurate knowledge of electron transport properties is vital to understanding the information provided by liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Ionization electron drift-lifetime, local electric field distortions caused by positive ion accumulation, and electron diffusion can all significantly impact the measured signal waveforms. This paper presents a measurement of the effective longitudinal electron diffusion coefficient, DL, in MicroBooNE at the nominal electric field strength of 273.9 V/cm. Historically, this measurement has been made in LArTPC prototype detectors. This represents the first measurement in a large-scale (85 tonne active volume) LArTPC operating in a neutrino beam. This is the largest dataset ever used for this measurement. Using a sample of ∼70,000 through-going cosmic ray muon tracks tagged with MicroBooNE's cosmic ray tagger system, we measure DL = 3.74+0.28 -0.29 cm2/s

    Contingent negative variation and evoked responses recorded by radio-telemetry in free-ranging subjects

    1. 1. Using an 8-channel radio-telemetry system (RTE) records were obtained of the EEG, pulse rate, respiration, evoked responses and Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) in four normal subjects and three patients with intracerebral electrodes. The subjects were free to move about within 30 m of the receiving aerial. Two RTE channels were modified to provide time constants of 7 sec. 2. 2. Auditory stimuli, synchronized with the operation of average response computers, were transmitted to the subjects by a separate radio-control link. These were used as conditional and imperative signals to the subjects to perform various tasks: pressing a button to arrest the imperative signals, turning the pages of a book, inserting pegs in a peg-board and coming to a stop on a bicycle. 3. 3. Responses to the signals were averaged on line with two barrier-grid tubes and a 2-channel Enhancetron and the intrinsic rhythms were analysed with a 2-channel frequency analyser. The pulse rate was indicated by a cardiotachometer. 4. 4. The initil responses and CNV during the reception of paired auditory signals were similar to those seen with direct connection, provided that the subjects were engaged in some task related to the signals. The CNV was attenuated during exercise or conversation only while the subject was inattentive to the signals. 5. 5. The amplitude of the intracerebral responses to the conditional and imperative stimuli in the patients with implanted electrodes was reduced when the scalp CNV was attenuated by isolation or distraction. 6. 6. During the performance of fairly complex tasks following the auditory signals, the CNV terminated only at the completion of the task, not at the moment of muscular effort. 7. 7. The radio-control link was also used to instruct an experimenter when to loss a ball to a subject or to feint. In this situation also the CNV developed only when the subject was sure the ball was in the air and terminated when it was caught. 8. 8. These observations suggest that the interactions of evoked responses and CNV seen in laboratory conditions also accompany normal activity and the performance of everyday tasks

    Abstract. We present the syntax and semantics for a multi-agent dialogue game protocol which permits argument over proposals for action. The protocol, called the PARMA Protocol, embodies an earlier theory by the authors of persuasion over action which enables participants to rationally propose, attack, and defend, an action or course of actions (or inaction). We present an outline of both an axiomatic and a denotational semantics, and discuss an implementation of the protocol for two human agents.
