    Effect of Temperature on Demographic Parameters of the Hawthorn Red Midget Moth, Phyllonorycter corylifoliella, on Apple

    The hawthorn red midget moth, Phyllonorycter corylifoliella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), is one of the most serious pests of apple and pear orchards in Iran, however little is known about its biology and relationship with environmental factors. The reproduction and population growth parameters of P. corylifoliella were examined at six constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 33 and 35° C) on apple var. golden delicious. At 35° C, P. corylifoliella failed to develop beyond the first instar. The lowest (13%) and highest (64%) mortality rates of immature stages occurred at 25 and 33° C, respectively. The life expectancies (ex) decreased with increasing of age and the life expectancies of one-day-old larvae were estimated to be 38.68, 33.34, 35.11, 26.28 and 16.11 days at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 33° C, respectively. The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), net reproductive rate (Ro) and finite rate of increase (λ) at 25° C were 0.100 ± 0.003, 47.66 ± 5.47 and 1.11 ± 0.00, respectively. The mean generation time (T) decreased with increasing temperatures from 86.86 ± 0.53 days at 15° C to 33.48 ± 0.16 days at 30° C. Doubling time (DT) varied significantly with temperature and the shortest doubling time was obtained at 25° C. The results of this study provide direction for future research on evaluating the performance of P. corylifoliella and the efficiency of its natural enemies in apple orchards under variable environmental conditions

    Treatment of Ankyloglossia with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser in a Pediatric Patient

    INTRODUCTION: Laser surgery as an alternative for conventional surgical procedure has gained special attention. Using Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser has some benefits like less post-operative pain, swelling and infection, decrease in risk of metastasis and edema, and less bleeding providing dry sites for surgery.CASE REPORT: A 12 years old boy with lingual frenum with indication for excision was referred to the laser department of Tehran University of medical sciences dental school. CO2 laser was used with 10600 nm wavelength, 1.5 W output power, 100 Hz frequency and 400 μsec pulse duration in non-contact mode.RESULTS: The result of using CO2 laser was dry and bloodless field during operation, no post operative swelling, no pain or discomfort, with normal healing process.CONCLUSION: We suggest and stimulate the use of CO2 laser for soft tissue surgery because of elimination of suture, convenient coagulation, time saving, patients’ comfort and easy manipulation

    Leukoplakia Removal by Carbon Dioxide Laser (CO2) Laser

    INTRODUCTION: definitive treatment of oral leukoplakia is very important because of its recurrences and malignant transformation depending on the location, clinical feature,degree of dysplasia and etiological factors. there are different kinds of treatment for this lesion, but using high power laser has some advantages like less pain, swelling, prevention of metastasis, edema, less bleeding (dry surgery) and infection.CASE: a 53_year_old man with leukoplakia lesion with moderate dysplasia on the left side of the ventral surface of the tongue was selected for treatment with co2 laser.the average power is set on 6.2 w with frequency of 20 hz. the irradiation mode was non-contact. the entire lesion evaporated by the laser with a 2 mm safety margin.RESULT: in this case, 80% of lesion had disappeared after 5 weeks and the 20% residual was evaporated again with the same parameters than the first time. no significant clinical differences were seen between the normal and laser-treated tissue.CONCLUSION: using laser in the treatment of oral lesions has many advantages like selective removal of the affected tissues and minimal damage to surrounding tissue, leading to excellent wound healing with no or minimal scar and good functional results

    AWARENESS OF PATIENTS’ BILLS OF RIGHTS AMONG MEDICAL STAFF IN MASHHAD MEDICAL UNIVERSITY` TEACHING HOSPITALS

    Introduction: Respecting patients’ rights practice and keeping patient satisfied is one of most important principles in ethical medicine. Increasing Awareness and respecting patients’ rights result in better health care considering human and ethical rights. The Ministry of Health and Medical Education in Iran published a patients’ bill of rights and mandated it be posted conspicuously for the patients. With regard to necessity of Patients’ bill of rights, patients’ role in decision making and respecting their right, this study aimed to investigate awareness of patients’ bills of rights among medical staff in Mashhad medical university` teaching hospitals Methods: The current analytical cross- sectional study was conducted on 129 medical staff in the year 2014-15 in Mashhad medical university` teaching hospitals. The data were collected using a self-administer questionnaire with 28 questions whose reliability was 80 according to Cronbach's alpha. One-way analysis of variance, Student's t-distribution was used to compare means of Awareness via SPSS Ver. 21. Results: The results indicated that awareness of medical staff was M=65/3, SD=67/0. Nursing staff were the most aware and radiology staff were the less aware from patients’ bills of rights. Conclusion: Today, observing patients 'rights is one of the most important issues that should be placed at the top of the attention of health care programs, observance of patients’ bills of rights make  people feel  satisfied with respect for them at health care centers  .     “Comparison of Cochlear Microphonics Magnitude with Broad and Narrow Band Stimuli in Healthy Adult Wistar Rats”

    AbstractObjective: Cochlear microphonic (CM) is a cochlear AC electric field, recorded within, around, and remote from its sources. Nowadays it can contribute to the differential diagnosis of different auditory pathologies such as auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). The aim of this study was to compare CM waveforms (CMWs) and amplitudes with broad and narrow band stimuli in 25 healthy male young adult Wistar rats.Methods: Using an extratympanic technique in ECochG (Electrocochleography) recording, CMWs in response to click and tonal stimuli with different octave frequencies were recorded at a high intensity level in subjects. The CMW amplitudes were calculated by a graphical user interface (GUI) designed in MATLAB. The data was analyzed by One-way ANOVA test.Results: The CMW magnitude increased upon an increase in band width stimulation. Across tonal stimuli, the CMW amplitudes at lower frequency tones were larger than those at higher frequency tones. Those findings were statistically significant (P< 0.001).Conclusion: This study found that CMW most likely is a reflection of spatial summation of voltage drops generated by hair cell groups in response to acoustic stimulation. In order to production nature of CM potentials as well as their very small magnitudes especially with tonal stimuli, thus, we recommend using click stimulation for CM potential recording especially in patient with ANSD that CM plays an important role in its differential diagnosis and follow u

    Continuous post-disaster physical rehabilitation: a qualitative study on barriers and opportunities in Iran

    Background: Internationally, inclusion of physical rehabilitation services during early disaster response is relatively new. The aim of the study was to gain an understanding of disaster relief physical rehabilitation in Iran. Methods: A qualitative study design was employed and sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The participants in this study were purposively selected among people who experienced the Bam (2003) and Varzaghan (2012) earthquakes. Results: Three main themes were explored including: indispensable intervention, barriers to continuous intervention and opportunities for intervention. Almost all participants reiterated the importance of effective physical rehabilitation services during disasters. Some participants mentioned significant barriers for delivering such services in the context of Iran. The lack of an effective responsible body, weak disaster-related competencies and under-prioritization by government were among other barriers. On a more positive note, some interviewees talked about national programs that could facilitate service delivery. Conclusions: Providing disaster relief physical rehabilitation has faced many barriers in Iran. However, there are some facilitators in the country that could help provide these services. Finally, the feasibility of post-disaster physical rehabilitation services delivery completely depends on the current national rehabilitation system

    Development and Psychometric Evaluation of Speech and Language Pathology Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (SLP-EBPQ)

    Background: To date, there is no specific instrument to measure evidence-based practice (EBP) in Speech and Language Pathology (SLP). Therefore, it is essential to design a valid and reliable instrument in the EBP field for SLP. Aim: To develop a speech and language pathology evidence-based practice questionnaire (SLP-EBPQ) for the Iranian context and evaluate its psychometric properties. Method: This study was performed in two stages, first development of the instrument based on the literature review and semi-structured interviews with 14 speech and language pathologists and second the evaluation of the psychometric properties. Content validity of the instrument was assessed by SLP experts who were experienced in the field of EBP. Furthermore, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and comparison of the recognized groups were conducted to determine the initial construct validity of the SLP-EBPQ. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined using internal consistency and test-retest reliability. A total of 280 speech and language pathologists completed SLP-EBPQ to evaluate construct validity and internal consistency. Furthermore, 30 speech and language pathologists completed the SLP-EBPQ after 2 weeks for test-retest reliability. Results: The developed instrument was a questionnaire with 77 items. The results of EFA demonstrated that the SLP-EBPQ contained nine factors with appropriate internal consistency (α=0.635-0.885). Moreover, the Intra-class Correlation coefficient of the factors was (r=0.814-0.966) in the test-retest reliability. Implications for Practice: The SLP-EBPQ is a valid and reliable instrument and can be applied to evaluate EBP among speech and language pathologists for educational, clinical, or research purposes

    Sexual diversity of red algae using isomorphic generations of Gracilaria corticata in the northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

    In conformity with the sex determination of Gracilaria corticata in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, a total of 41 samples were collected from two stations of Bostaneh region (northern Persian Gulf, 54° 38´ E / 26° 30´ N) and Lipar regions (northern Oman Sea, 60° 49´ E / 25° 15´ N). The specimens were cultured in PES media for observing the different life stages. The anatomical structures of thallus were taken into consideration. The diploid tetrasporophytes and spermatangia in thallus of male’s gametophytes; and Carpospore and cystocarps of female were determined. Due to DNA extraction, the parasites and epiphytes were cleaned and then the under growing sections were sectioned using liquid nitrogen. After extraction of DNA, by using 20 different primers according to ISSR molecular indicator, the sex diversity and genetic diversity of populations were studied; and four primers were selected ultimately. The obtained results were analyzed by GenAlex and PopGen softwares. In total, 74 bands, all polymorphisms, were propagated. According to PIC index, polymorphism separation of primer C (0.33) was higher than other primers. The Marker Index was measured between 4.48 and 6.51 with mean Shannon’s index of 0.46. The genetic similarity amongst algae was 96%. The genetic diversity inter and intra populations had significant differences of which 83% of total diversity was related to the intra diversity and 17% was related to inter diversity populations. The highest genetic distance belonged to the specimens 5 (Bostaneh) and 35 (Lipar), and it indicated the inter populations diversity in addition to intra population. As an overall conclusion, these populations can be considered as broodstocks for hybrid production for further species breeding and also to attain the maximum heterosis in adaptation with environment. In Ward clustering analysis, the dendrograms showed 5 different clusters in genetic distance of 12.18 of isomorphic phases. The PCA analysis as a complementally method was used for attest the findings. In this research, the ISSR primers could determine the male and female gametophytes and diploid tetrasporophytes in which the primer A (bands of 1200 & 1700 bp) specific for diploid tetrasporophyte and band of 300 bp specific for male were produced. The primer C showed the bands of 820 & 900 bp for diploid tetrasporophyte, and 500 bp for female gametophyte. The primer AB (990 bp) for male, 520 bp for female and 1600 & 1900 bp for diploid tetrasporophyte were specified. The primer ABC showed the specific band of 1100 bp for male; 500 bp for female; and 1200 & 1500 bp for diploid tetrasporophytes

    Evaluation of overall survival and disease-free survival of adjuvant chemotherapy and hormone therapy in patients with breast cancer

    Abstract : Background: This study evaluated the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy and hormone therapy on overall survival and disease-free survival in patients with breast cancer with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative tumor without lymph node involvement. Methods: Breast cancer patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative, and no lymph node involvement were included in this retrospective cohort study. Patient records were used to collect data on sex, age, time of disease onset, tumor subtype, tumor size, grade, lymphovascular and perineural involvement, ki67, and treatment protocols. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Patients who received both adjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal therapy and patients who received hormonal therapy only. Disease-free survival index (DFS) and overall survival index (OS) were evaluated. Results: Sixty-seven female patients were enrolled in this study. Of them, 68.2% received both adjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal therapy and 31.6% received hormonal therapy only. During follow-up, recurrences occurred in 8 patients. The 3-year and 5-year DFS were 93.4% and 90%, respectively. The 3-year and 5-year DFS were 94% and 92%, respectively, in patients who received both adjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, and 91% and 85%, respectively, in patients who received hormonal therapy. None of the factors studied affected the 3-year and 5-year DFS. The 3-year and 5-year DFS OS were 98.6% and 96.9%, respectively CONCLUSION: Adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative, and no lymph node involvement compared with similar patients receiving hormone therapy alone had no significant difference in disease-free survival index and overall survival index.
