Mining social network data for personalisation and privacy concerns: A case study of Facebook’s Beacon
This is the post-print version of the final published paper that is available from the link below. The popular success of online social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook is a hugely tempting resource of data mining for businesses engaged in personalised marketing. The use of personal information, willingly shared between online friends' networks intuitively appears to be a natural extension of current advertising strategies such as word-of-mouth and viral marketing. However, the use of SNS data for personalised marketing has provoked outrage amongst SNS users and radically highlighted the issue of privacy concern. This paper inverts the traditional approach to personalisation by conceptualising the limits of data mining in social networks using privacy concern as the guide. A qualitative investigation of 95 blogs containing 568 comments was collected during the failed launch of Beacon, a third party marketing initiative by Facebook. Thematic analysis resulted in the development of taxonomy of privacy concerns which offers a concrete means for online businesses to better understand SNS business landscape - especially with regard to the limits of the use and acceptance of personalised marketing in social networks
Higgs Resonance Studies At The First Muon Collider
Higgs resonance signals and backgrounds at the First Muon Collider are
discussed. Effects due to beam polarization and background angular
distributions (forward-backward charge asymmetries) are examined. The utility
of those features for improving precision measurements and narrow resonance
``discovery'' scans is described.Comment: 6 pages, latex. Presented at the Workshop on Physics at the First

First-principles methodology for quantum transport in multiterminal junctions
We present a generalized approach for computing electron conductance and I-V
characteristics in multiterminal junctions from first-principles. Within the
framework of Keldysh theory, electron transmission is evaluated employing an
O(N) method for electronic-structure calculations. The nonequilibrium Green
function for the nonequilibrium electron density of the multiterminal junction
is computed self-consistently by solving Poisson equation after applying a
realistic bias. We illustrate the suitability of the method on two examples of
four-terminal systems, a radialene molecule connected to carbon chains and two
crossed carbon chains brought together closer and closer. We describe charge
density, potential profile, and transmission of electrons between any two
terminals. Finally, we discuss the applicability of this technique to study
complex electronic devices.Comment: Will be coming out in JCP soo
Quantification of alkaloids, phenols and flavonoids in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
Allelochemicals in leaves, stems and roots of sunflower (cv Hysun 38) were determined using thin layer chromatography (TLC) for alkaloids and spectrophotometry for phenols and flavonoids. In the TLC, the highest Rf value was recorded in leaves, followed by roots and stems, a sequence that held true also for the quantity of phenols and flavonoids. The soil texture, which was sandy loam, was not changed before or after the harvest.Key words: Allelochemicals, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, sunflower, spectrophotometry, thin layer chromatography
Right-Handed Neutrinos and T-Violating, P-Conserving Interactions
We show that experimental probes of the P-conserving, T-violating triple
correlation in polarized neutron or nuclear -decay provide a unique
probe of possible T-violation at the TeV scale in the presence of right-handed
neutrinos. In contrast to other possible sources of semileptonic T-violation
involving only left-handed neutrinos, those involving right-handed neutrinos
are relatively unconstrained by present limits on the permanent electric dipole
moments of the electron, neutral atoms, and the neutron. On the other hand, LHC
results for missing transverse energy imply that an order of
magnitude of improvement in -coefficient sensitivity would be needed for
discovery. Finally, we discuss the interplay with the scale of neutrino mass
and naturalness considerations.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Nonfactorization in Hadronic Two-body Cabibbo-favored decays of D^0 and D^+
With the inclusion of nonfactorized amplitudes in a scheme with , we
have studied Cabibbo-favored decays of and into two-body hadronic
states involving two isospins in the final state. We have shown that it is
possible to understand the measured branching ratios and determined the sizes
and signs of nonfactorized amplitudes required.Comment: 15 pages, Late
