    Monte Carlo studies of the Ising square lattice with competing interactions

    We use improved Monte-Carlo algorithms to study the antiferromagnetic 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J1J_1 on nearest neighbour and J2J_2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds. The finite-temperature phase diagram is divided by a critical point at J2=J1/2J_2 = J_1/2 where the groundstate is highly degenerate. To analyse the phase boundaries we look at the specific heat and the energy distribution for various ratios of J2/J1J_2/J_1. We find a first order transition for small J2>J1/2J_2 > J_1/2 and the transition temperature suppressed to TC=0T_C=0 at the critical point.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of the conference on Highly Frustrated Magnets 2008 in Braunschwei

    We restudy the phase diagram of the 2D-Ising model with competing interactions J1J_1 on nearest neighbour and J2J_2 on next-nearest neighbour bonds via Monte-Carlo simulations. We present the finite temperature phase diagram and introduce computational methods which allow us to calculate transition temperatures close to the critical point at J2=0.5J1J_2 = 0.5 J_1. Further on we investigate the character of the different phase boundaries and find that the transition is weakly first order for moderate J2>0.5J1J_2 > 0.5 J_1.Comment: 5 pages including 6 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

    Quantum disordered ground state for the frustrated square lattice

    We present Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations of an exchange-anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions. The ground state phase diagram shows two classical magnetically ordered phases for dominating antiferromagnetic S^z-interactions and for large quantum fluctuations a ferromagnetic order in the x-y plane. In between a finite region is detected where neither classical nor quantum mechanical order, e.g. long-ranged dimer correlations, are found.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, proceedings SCES 201

    Direct Catalytic Route to Biomass-Derived 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid and Its Use as Monomer in a Multicomponent Polymerization

    Efficient synthesis of valuable platform chemicals from renewable feedstock is a challenging, yet essential strategy for developing technologies that are both economical and sustainable. In the present study, we investigated the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in a two-step catalytic process starting from sucrose as largely available biomass feedstock. In the first step, 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) was synthesized by hydrolysis and dehydration of sucrose using sulfuric acid in a continuous reactor in 34% yield. In a second step, the resulting reaction solution was directly oxidized to FDCA without further purification over a Au/ZrO2_{2} catalyst with 84% yield (87% selectivity, batch process), corresponding to 29% overall yield with respect to sucrose. This two-step process could afford the production of pure FDCA after the respective extraction/crystallization despite the impure intermediate HMF solution. To demonstrate the direct application of the biomass-derived FDCA as monomer, the isolated product was used for Ugi-multicomponent polymerizations, establishing a new application possibility for FDCA. In the future, this efficient two-step process strategy toward FDCA should be extended to further renewable feedstock

    Since the 1950s the amount of plastics in the marine environment has increased dramatically. Worldwide there is a growing concern about the risks and possible adverse effects of (micro) plastics. This paper reflects on the sources and effects of marine litter and the effects of policies and other actions taken worldwide. Current knowledge offers a solid basis for effective action. Yet, so far the effects of policies and other initiatives are still largely insufficient. The search for appropriate responses could be based on possible interventions and profound understanding of the context specific factors for success. Moreover, the scope, timeframe and dynamics of all initiatives are distinctly different and orchestration at all levels, in close cooperation with one another is currently lacking

    Mindergie: A pervasive learning game for pro-environmental behaviour at the workplace

    This chapter reports about a pervasive learning game to increase the environmental awareness and pro-environmental behaviour at the workplace. Based on a discussion of the theoretical background and related work we introduce the game design and game elements. Results of a formative evaluation study are presented and discussed. Results show that incentive mechanisms are less important than challenging game components that involve employees in proposing solutions for energy conservation at the workplace.     Towards ‘MOOCs with a Purpose’: Crowdsourcing and Analysing Scalable Design Solutions with MOOC Learners

    In this study we explored the use of a research assignment on instructional design of MOOCs by MOOC students. The use of a research assignment was expected to be of interest for both students and the designer. The assignment is based on a framework to analyse MOOC designs with the objective to identify best practices. It builds on four principles: constructive alignment, task complexity, interaction and formative feedback. The exploration indicates that students positively appreciate this kind of assignments. Moreover, the crowdsourcing alike approach showed to be a valuable way for MOOC designers to get awarded with data gathered by their participants. The participants, be it a small sample, were able to apply the framework to analyse MOOCs and identify best practices. We will discuss the framework and the results of its application.
