Unusual landings of ghol, Protonibea dicanthus in dol net at Bassien Kolliwada(Vasai) landing centre.
Bassein Kolliwada is an important landing center in Maharashtra, where traditional dol net fishing is carried out for Bombay duck and silver pomfret which are economically the most important resources in the region. But, landings of Bombay duck and silver pomfrets have declined considerably during past few years. A dol net boat named ‘Dayadhan‘landed huge catch of ghol fish,Protonibea dicanthus at Bassein Kolliwada, from a depth of about 40 meters off Jaffrabad in Saurashtra region of Gujarat. It is perhaps the scarcity of fish that has led them to search for the new grounds for ghol, ribbonfish, koth(O.biauritus),and warm (C.talabanoides) in Gujarat waters
Seasonal abundance of ‘Ghol’, Protonibea diacanthus (Lacepede, 1802) at Bassien koliwada, Maharashtra
Protonibea diacanthus, locally known as ‘Ghol’
is one of the commercially important fishes of
northwest coast of India. The swim bladder of Ghol,
after sun drying, is processed into clarifying agent for
the beverage industry. The bladder of this species
fetches a very high market price owing to its excellent
quality
Occurrence of juveniles of Platax sp. in inshore waters of Mumbai
Angelfish, sea bat or leaffish belong to the family Platacidae have been landed in trawlers and Purse seiners at New Ferry wharf andSasoon Dock in October and November for the last four years. Juveniles of Platax sp. were observed in dol net catches. Juveniles are discarded, while
the adults fetch good price in the local market, as they
are edible and palatable. It is quite possible that this
unusual landing of juveniles in dol nets in good numbers
was due to the young ones coming into the shallow
waters to escape strong currents and perhaps for the
search of food. They are usually found in shallow
waters among weeds, sea grass or coral and small
specimens of Platax sp. are very popular aquarium
fishes
On a giant cobia, Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus,1766) landed at Sassoon Dock,Mumbai
A giant cobia, Rachycentron canadum was landed at Sassoon duck, Mumbai on 18-08-2003 by a gill-netter operated at a distance of 25-30 km south west of Mumbai at the depth of 20-25m.The species is distributed world wide in warm seas except for the eastern pacific regoin. It is pelagic but also found over shallow coral reefs and off rock shores, occasionally enters in estuaries
