    Kant’s theory of conscience

    In this paper I discuss Kant’s theory of conscience. In particular, I explicate the following two claims that Kant makes in the Metaphysics of Morals: (1) an erring conscience is an absurdity and (2) if an agent has acted according to his/her conscience, then s/he has done all that can be required of him/her. I argue that (1) is a very specific claim that does not bear on the problem of moral knowledge. I argue that (2) rests on a strongly internalist line of argument

    This Chapter reviews evidence on discrimination in basketball, primarily examining studies on race but with some discussion of gender as well. I focus on discrimination in pay, hiring, and retention against black NBA players and coaches and pay disparities by gender among college coaches. There was much evidence for each of these forms of discrimination against black NBA players in the 1980s. However, there appears to be less evidence of racial compensation, hiring and retention discrimination against black players in the 1990s and early 2000s than the 1980s. This apparent decline is consistent with research on customer discrimination in the NBA: in the 1980s, there was abundant evidence of fan preference for white players; however, since the 1980s, these preferences seem much weaker. There appears to be little evidence of pay, hiring or retention discrimination against black NBA coaches, and while male college basketball coaches outearn females, this gap is accounted for by differences in revenues and coaches' work histories.     Temporary Jobs and Job Search Effort in Europe

    Using longitudinal data on individuals from the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) for eight countries during 1995-2001, I investigate temporary job contract duration and job search effort. The countries are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. I construct a search model for workers in temporary jobs which predicts that shorter duration raises search intensity. Calibration of the model to the ECHP data implies that at least 59% of the increase in search intensity over the life a long term temporary job occurs in the last period. I then estimate regression models for search effort that control for human capital, pay, local unemployment, gender, and time and country fixed effects, I find that workers on temporary jobs indeed search harder than those on permanent jobs. Moreover, search intensity increases as temporary job duration falls, and at least 80% of this increase occurs on average in the shortest duration jobs. These results are robust to disaggregation by gender and country and to individual fixed effects. These empirical results are noteworthy, since it is not necessary to assume myopia or hyperbolic discounting in order to explain them, although the data clearly also do not rule out such explanations.job search, temporary jobs

    Wage inequality in the U.S. exceeds that of Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. Some researchers have pointed to the higher relative rewards for higher cognitive skill and more education in the U.S. as an important cause of this difference; others emphasize the greater diversity of labor market skills within the American population. This paper uses recently collected international data on cognitive skills, earnings, age, and years of formal schooling to assess the relative importance of population heterogeneity and higher relative pay for more cognitive skill in explaining higher U.S. wage inequality

    X-Ray IGM in the Local Group

    Recent observations with the dispersive X-ray spectrometers aboard Chandra and Newton Observatory have begun to probe the properties of the X-ray intergalactic medium (IGM) at small redshifts. Using large quantities (~950 ksec) of spectroscopic data acquired using the RGS aboard Newton Observatory, we investigated the intervening material toward three low redshift, high Galactic latitude AGNs with nominally featureless spectra: Mrk421, PKS2155-304 and 3C273. Each spectrum provides clear evidence for what appears to be a local (z~0), highly ionized absorbing medium betrayed by the OVII 1s-2p resonance transition feature seen at 21.6A (N[OVII] ~ 1E16 cm-2). Measurements are also made for the Lyman alpha transition of the adjacent ionization state, (OVIII; 18.97A), which potentially constrains the absorber's temperature. Finally, in a collisional equilibrium approximation, upper limits to diffuse emission intensities place upper limits on the electron density (ne < 2E-4 cm-3), lower limits on the scale length of the absorber (L > 140 kpc) and lower limits on its mass (M > 5E10 M[sun]). Limits on the absorber's scale length and its velocity distribution lead us to identify it with the Local Group.Comment: 6 pages, 1 table and 2 figs. Latex.
