    Remedial brushless AC operation of fault-tolerant doubly salient permanent-magnet motor drives

    The doubly salient permanent-magnet (DSPM) machine is a new class of stator-PM brushless machines, which inherently offers the fault-tolerant feature. In this paper, a new operation strategy is proposed and implemented for fault-tolerant DSPM motor drives. The key is to operate the DSPM motor drive in a remedial brushless ac (BLAC) mode under the open-circuit fault condition, while operating in the conventional brushless dc mode under normal condition. Both cosimulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed remedial BLAC operation can maintain the average torque, reduce the torque ripple, and retain the self-starting capability under the open-circuit fault. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    A transient cosimulation approach to performance analysis of hybrid excited doubly salient machine considering indirect field-circuit coupling

    This paper presents a hybrid excited doubly salient (HEDS) machine, which can be used as the integrated starter-generator (ISG) for modern automobile and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The key of the proposed machine is to incorporate both direct current (dc) field windings and permanent magnets (PMs) in the stator, hence, offering a compact arrangement of hybrid field excitations, while the rotor is simply composed of salient poles without windings or FMs. The air-gap flux can be strengthened or weakened with a reasonable dc field current so that the electromagnetic torque and induced electromotive force (EMF) can be effectively regulated. To predict the electromagnetic performances of the machine more accurately, a new transient cosimulation approach considering indirect field-circuit coupling is proposed. Experimental results on a prototype machine have been given to verify the technique.     Flux-switching permanent-magnet (FSPM) motors are a newly developed brushless AC (BLAC) machine having magnets in the stator. This paper proposes and implements a stator-flux-oriented (SFO) control strategy for fault-tolerant operation of FSPM motors. The key is to set the q-axis component of armature current invariant before and after the fault. In the rotor reference frame, by building a SFO-dq equation of the FSPM motor, the fault-tolerant control strategy is deduced. The finite-element method and the field-circuit cosimulation method are employed to analyze the performance of the FSPM motor drive. Finally, a dSPACE-based FSPM motor drive platform is built for experimental verification.     Expression of Drug Targets in Patients Treated with Sorafenib, Carboplatin and Paclitaxel

    Introduction: Sorafenib, a multitarget kinase inhibitor, targets members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and VEGFR kinases. Here we assessed the association between expression of sorafenib targets and biomarkers of taxane sensitivity and response to therapy in pre-treatment tumors from patients enrolled in ECOG 2603, a phase III comparing sorafenib, carboplatin and paclitaxel (SCP) to carboplatin, paclitaxel and placebo (CP). Methods: Using a method of automated quantitative analysis (AQUA) of in situ protein expression, we quantified expression of VEGF-R2, VEGF-R1, VEGF-R3, FGF-R1, PDGF-Rβ, c-Kit, B-Raf, C-Raf, MEK1, ERK1/2, STMN1, MAP2, EB1 and Bcl-2 in pretreatment specimens from 263 patients. Results: An association was found between high FGF-R1 and VEGF-R1 and increased progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in our combined cohort (SCP and CP arms). Expression of FGF-R1 and VEGF-R1 was higher in patients who responded to therapy ((CR+PR) vs. (SD+PD+ un-evaluable)). Conclusions: In light of the absence of treatment effect associated with sorafenib, the association found between FGF-R1 and VEGF-R1 expression and OS, PFS and response might reflect a predictive biomarker signature for carboplatin/paclitaxel-based therapy. Seeing that carboplatin and pacitaxel are now widely used for this disease, corroboration in another cohort might enable us to improve the therapeutic ratio of this regimen. © 2013 Jilaveanu et al
