    The Regulation of Sulfur Metabolism in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has evolved into a highly successful human pathogen. It deftly subverts the bactericidal mechanisms of alveolar macrophages, ultimately inducing granuloma formation and establishing long-term residence in the host. These hallmarks of Mtb infection are facilitated by the metabolic adaptation of the pathogen to its surrounding environment and the biosynthesis of molecules that mediate its interactions with host immune cells. The sulfate assimilation pathway of Mtb produces a number of sulfur-containing metabolites with important contributions to pathogenesis and survival. This pathway is regulated by diverse environmental cues and regulatory proteins that mediate sulfur transactions in the cell. Here, we discuss the transcriptional and biochemical mechanisms of sulfur metabolism regulation in Mtb and potential small molecule regulators of the sulfate assimilation pathway that are collectively poised to aid this intracellular pathogen in its expert manipulation of the host. From this global analysis, we have identified a subset of sulfur-metabolizing enzymes that are sensitive to multiple regulatory cues and may be strong candidates for therapeutic intervention

    Studies on the mechanical stretchability of transparent conductive film based on graphene-metal nanowire structures

    Transparent electrodes with superior flexibility and stretchability as well as good electrical and optical properties are required for applications in wearable electronics with comfort designs and high performances. Here, we present hybrid nanostructures as stretchable and transparent electrodes based on graphene and networks of metal nanowires, and investigate their optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. High electrical and optical characteristics, superb bendability (folded in half), excellent stretchability (10,000 times in stretching cycles with 100% in tensile strain toward a uniaxial direction and 30% in tensile strain toward a multi-axial direction), strong robustness against electrical breakdown and thermal oxidation were obtained through comprehensive study.     Synthesis of monolithic graphene-graphite integrated electronics

    Encoding electronic functionality into nanoscale elements during chemical synthesis has been extensively explored over the past decade as the key to developing integrated nanosystems(1) with functions defined by synthesis(2-6). Graphene(7-12) has been recently explored as a two-dimensional nanoscale material, and has demonstrated simple device functions based on conventional top-down fabrication(13-20). However, the synthetic approach to encoding electronic functionality and thus enabling an entire integrated graphene electronics in a chemical synthesis had not previously been demonstrated. Here we report an unconventional approach for the synthesis of monolithically integrated electronic devices based on graphene and graphite. Spatial patterning of heterogeneous metal catalysts permits the selective growth of graphene and graphite, with a controlled number of graphene layers. Graphene transistor arrays with graphitic electrodes and interconnects were formed from the synthesis. These functional, all-carbon structures were transferable onto a variety of substrates. The integrated transistor arrays were used to demonstrate real-time, multiplexed chemical sensing and more significantly, multiple carbon layers of the graphene-graphite device components were vertically assembled to form a three-dimensional flexible structure which served as a top-gate transistor array. These results represent substantial progress towards encoding electronic functionality through chemical synthesis and suggest the future promise of one-step integration of graphene-graphite based electronics.close675

    Comportamento alimentar e imagem corporal entre estudantes de educação física Eating disorders and body image among physical education students

    OBJETIVO: Caracterizar práticas alimentares e possíveis fatores de risco associados a transtornos do comportamento alimentar entre estudantes de Educação Física em uma universidade pública do município do Rio de Janeiro. MÉTODO: Estudo seccional, elegendo-se como população-alvo um segmento de risco para o surgimento de transtornos alimentares. Foram aplicados os questionários Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh (BITE), Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) e uma variável que considera os dois instrumentos associados. RESULTADOS: Detectou-se resultado positivo em 6,9% (IC95%: 3,6-11,7%) no EAT-26. No BITE, para sintomas elevados e gravidade intensa, foram encontradas prevalências de 5% (IC95%: 2,4-9,5%) e 2,5% (IC95%: 0,7-6,3%), respectivamente. Constatou-se que 26,29% das estudantes apresentavam comportamento alimentar anormal. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados deste estudo indicam que se deve atentar para comportamentos alimentares de risco nesse grupo, justificando-se um olhar diferenciado em relação a esses futuros educadores.<br>OBJECTIVE: To characterize eating practices and possible risk factors associated with eating disorders among physical education students in a public university of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RESULTS: A positive result was detected in 6.9% of cases (IC95%: 3.6-11.7%) on EAT-26. On BITE, for elevated symptoms and severe cases, a prevalence of 5% was found (IC95%: 2.4-9.5%) and 2.5% (IC95%: 0.7-6.3%), respectively. It was evidenced that 26.29% of students presented abnormal eating behavior. CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrate the need to pay attention to risk eating behaviors in this group, being justified to take special care with these future health care educators
