    Multi-scale interactions between turbulence and magnetohydrodynamic instability driven by energetic particles

    In order to realize high performance burning plasmas in magnetic-confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks, both bulk plasma transport and that of energetic fusion alpha-particles, which result from different scale fluctuations with different free energy sources, have to be reduced simultaneously. Utilizing the advantage of global toroidal non-linear simulations covering a whole torus, here, we found a new coupling mechanism between the low-frequency micro-scale electromagnetic drift-wave fluctuations regulating the former, while the high-frequency macro-scale toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) regulates the latter. This results from the dual spread of micro-scale turbulence due to the macro-scale TAE not only in wavenumber space representing local eddy size but also in configuration space with global profile variations. Consequently, a new class of turbulent state is found to be established, where the turbulence is homogenized on the poloidal cross-section with exhibiting large-scale structure, which increases fluctuation levels and then both transports, leading to deterioration in the fusion performance

    Some exact computations on the twisted butterfly state in string field theory

    The twisted butterfly state solves the equation of motion of vacuum string field theory in the singular limit. The finiteness of the energy density of the solution is an important issue, but possible conformal anomaly resulting from the twisting has prevented us from addressing this problem. We present a description of the twisted regulated butterfly state in terms of a conformal field theory with a vanishing central charge which consists of the ordinary bc ghosts and a matter system with c=26. Various quantities relevant to vacuum string field theory are computed exactly using this description. We find that the energy density of the solution can be finite in the limit, but the finiteness depends on the subleading structure of vacuum string field theory. We further argue, contrary to our previous expectation, that contributions from subleading terms in the kinetic term to the energy density can be of the same order as the contribution from the leading term which consists of the midpoint ghost insertion.Comment: 36 pages, no figures, LaTeX2e; v2: minor corrections; v3: typos corrected, published in JHEP; v4: a minor typo in (C.12) correcte

    Coronary angioscopic findings 9 months after everolimus-eluting stent implantation compared with sirolimus-eluting stents

    AbstractObjectivesWe assessed angioscopic findings after everolimus-eluting stents (EES) implantation, compared with sirolimus-eluting stents (SES).BackgroundCoronary angioscopy (CAS) provides an opportunity to assess neointimal coverage over stent struts, thrombus, and plaque color by direct visualization. CAS is a useful tool for evaluating stent struts after drug-eluting stent implantation. Angioscopic findings after EES implantation have not been reported before.MethodsWe performed CAS in 23 patients who were treated with EES and 41 patients with SES. CAS was performed 8.5 months after stent implantation. We assessed neointimal coverage, thrombus, and plaque color. We classified neointimal coverage in 4 grades: grade 0=struts were completely exposed; grade 1=struts were visible with dull light reflexion; grade 2=there was no light reflexion from slightly visible struts; grade 3=struts were completely covered.ResultsThere was no significant difference in minimum, maximum, dominant grade of neointimal coverage, and heterogeneity index between EES and SES. Thrombus was less frequently observed in EES than SES (4% vs 29%, p=0.02). When we divided study patients into acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or stable angina pectoris (SAP), there was a tendency toward less thrombus in EES than SES, in both ACS and SAP. Maximum color grade of the plaques was less advanced in EES than SES (p<0.01). Yellow plaques of grade 2 or 3 were less frequent in EES than SES (35% vs 76%, p<0.01).ConclusionsThis study suggested that EES were associated with lower risk of thrombus formation than SES

    Inflammatory Mediator TAK1 Regulates Hair Follicle Morphogenesis and Anagen Induction Shown by Using Keratinocyte-Specific TAK1-Deficient Mice

    Transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is a member of the NF-κB pathway and regulates inflammatory responses. We previously showed that TAK1 also regulates keratinocyte growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. However, it is unknown whether TAK1 has any role in epithelial–mesenchymal interactions. To examine this possibility, we studied the role of TAK1 in mouse hair follicle development and cycling as an instructive model system. By comparing keratinocyte-specific TAK1-deficient mice (Map3k7fl/flK5-Cre) with control mice, we found that the number of hair germs (hair follicles precursors) in Map3k7fl/flK5-Cre mice was significantly reduced at E15.5, and that subsequent hair follicle morphogenesis was retarded. Next, we analyzed the role of TAK1 in the cyclic remodeling in follicles by analyzing hair cycle progression in mice with a tamoxifen-inducible keratinocyte-specific TAK1 deficiency (Map3k7fl/flK14-Cre-ERT2). After active hair growth (anagen) was induced by depilation, TAK1 was deleted by topical tamoxifen application. This resulted in significantly retarded anagen development in TAK1-deficient mice. Deletion of TAK1 in hair follicles that were already in anagen induced premature, apoptosis-driven hair follicle regression, along with hair follicle damage. These studies provide the first evidence that the inflammatory mediator TAK1 regulates hair follicle induction and morphogenesis, and is required for anagen induction and anagen maintenance

    Solutions from boundary condition changing operators in open string field theory

    We construct analytic solutions of open string field theory using boundary condition changing (bcc) operators. We focus on bcc operators with vanishing conformal weight such as those for regular marginal deformations of the background. For any Fock space state phi, the component string field of the solution Psi exhibits a remarkable factorization property: it is given by the matter three-point function of phi with a pair of bcc operators, multiplied by a universal function that only depends on the conformal weight of phi. This universal function is given by a simple integral expression that can be computed once and for all. The three-point functions with bcc operators are thus the only needed physical input of the particular open string background described by the solution. We illustrate our solution with the example of the rolling tachyon profile, for which we prove convergence analytically. The form of our solution, which involves bcc operators instead of explicit insertions of the marginal operator, can be a natural starting point for the construction of analytic solutions for arbitrary backgrounds.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX2e; v2: minor changes, version published in JHE

    A Case of Inoperable Duodenal Cancer Achieving Long-Term Survival after Multidisciplinary Treatment

    A 50-year-old female became aware of skin yellowing and consulted another hospital where she was diagnosed intraoperatively with duodenal cancer because of lymph node metastases around the aorta. Endoscopy revealed type IIa + IIc cancer distal to the duodenal papilla, and biopsy allowed a diagnosis of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Computed tomography revealed a large number of lymph node metastases around the aorta and in the left supraclavicular cavity. The patient was given many regimens of chemotherapy, mainly containing S-1, and multidisciplinary treatment, and achieved long-term survival for 6 years and 1 month. This is a valuable case suggesting the usefulness of this therapeutic approach. In view of the fact that duodenal cancer is a relatively rare disease and the possibility that the incidence of this disease may increase in the future, it seems essential to collect additional data from multicenter prospective studies towards the goal of establishing a standard method of treatment for this disease
