Altered NR2A/NR2B ratio in hippocampus of spatial learning-impaired aged rats

The activation of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is critical for the induction of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Aging can alter glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the hippocampus, and cognitive impairments in aged animals are accompanied by reduced NMDARmediated plasticity at Schaffer collateral—CA1 synapses. However, the specific contribution of NMDAR subunits to NMDAR-mediated synaptic responses in aged tissue has not yet been fully understood. The main purpose of present study was to examine whether there is an impact of aging on NMDAR subunit expression and whether synaptic plasticity may depend on NMDAR subunit composition in the aged hippocampus

Determination of nutrient salts by automatic methods both in seawater and brackish water: the phosphate blank

9 páginas, 2 tablas, 2 figurasThe main inconvenience in determining nutrients in seawater by automatic methods is simply solved: the preparation of a suitable blank which corrects the effect of the refractive index change on the recorded signal. Two procedures are proposed, one physical (a simple equation to estimate the effect) and the other chemical (removal of the dissolved phosphorus with ferric hydroxide).Support for this work came from CICYT (MAR88-0245 project) and Conselleria de Pesca de la Xunta de GaliciaPeer reviewe

While the diversity of the American population is one of the nation’s greatest assets, the profound disparity in health status across racial and ethnic populations is one of its greatest challenges. The country has entered the 21st century with such scientific and technological bounty that we should and must be able to assure good health and long life to all citizens. While the promise of health and longevity is a reality for millions of Americans, it is not for others. There are many examples: the number of African American men and particularly women with AIDS has increased substantially; Hispanic women are the least likely to use preventive services such as the Pap test, mammography, and clinical breast examination; the prevalence rate of diabetes among American Indians and Alaska Natives is more than twice that for the total U.S. population.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1497377
