Connecting the Holographic and Wilsonian Renormalization Groups
Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we develop an explicit formal duality
between the planar limit of a d-dimensional gauge theory and a classical field
theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The key ingredient is the
identification of fields in AdS with generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich
transforms of single-trace couplings of the QFT. We show that the Wilsonian
renormalization group flow of these transformed couplings matches the
holographic (Hamilton-Jacobi) flow of bulk fields along the radial direction in
AdS. This result allows one to outline an AdS/CFT dictionary that does not rely
on string theory.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure; metadata modified in v2; added references and

What two models may teach us about duality violations in QCD
Though the operator product expansion is applicable in the calculation of
current correlation functions in the Euclidean region, when approaching the
Minkowskian domain, violations of quark-hadron duality are expected to occur,
due to the presence of bound-state or resonance poles. In QCD finite-energy sum
rules, contour integrals in the complex energy plane down to the Minkowskian
axis have to be performed, and thus the question arises what the impact of
duality violations may be. The structure and possible relevance of duality
violations is investigated on the basis of two models: the Coulomb system and a
model for light-quark correlators which has already been studied previously. As
might yet be naively expected, duality violations are in some sense "maximal"
for zero-width bound states and they become weaker for broader resonances whose
poles lie further away from the physical axis. Furthermore, to a certain
extent, they can be suppressed by choosing appropriate weight functions in the
finite-energy sum rules. A simplified Ansatz for including effects of duality
violations in phenomenological QCD sum rule analyses is discussed as well.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures; version to appear in JHE
Inverse magnetic catalysis in dense holographic matter
We study the chiral phase transition in a magnetic field at finite
temperature and chemical potential within the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a
holographic top-down approach to (large-N_c) QCD. We consider the limit of a
small separation of the flavor D8-branes, which corresponds to a dual field
theory comparable to a Nambu-Jona Lasinio (NJL) model. Mapping out the surface
of the chiral phase transition in the parameter space of magnetic field
strength, quark chemical potential, and temperature, we find that for small
temperatures the addition of a magnetic field decreases the critical chemical
potential for chiral symmetry restoration - in contrast to the case of
vanishing chemical potential where, in accordance with the familiar phenomenon
of magnetic catalysis, the magnetic field favors the chirally broken phase.
This "inverse magnetic catalysis" (IMC) appears to be associated with a
previously found magnetic phase transition within the chirally symmetric phase
that shows an intriguing similarity to a transition into the lowest Landau
level. We estimate IMC to persist up to 10^{19} G at low temperatures.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures, v3: extended discussion; new appendix D;

't Hooft Operators in Gauge Theory from Toda CFT
We construct loop operators in two dimensional Toda CFT and calculate with
them the exact expectation value of certain supersymmetric 't Hooft and dyonic
loop operators in four dimensional \Ncal=2 gauge theories with SU(N) gauge
group. Explicit formulae for 't Hooft and dyonic operators in \Ncal=2^* and
\Ncal=2 conformal SQCD with SU(N) gauge group are presented. We also briefly
speculate on the Toda CFT realization of arbitrary loop operators in these
gauge theories in terms of topological web operators in Toda CFT.Comment: 49 pages, LaTeX. Typos fixed, references adde
Wilson loops stability in the gauge/string correspondence
We study the stability of some classical string worldsheet solutions employed
for computing the potential energy between two static fundamental quarks in
confining and non-confining gravity duals. We discuss the fixing of the
diffeomorphism invariance of the string action, its relation with the
fluctuation orientation and the interpretation of the quark mass substraction
worldsheet needed for computing the potential energy in smooth (confining)
gravity background. We consider various dual gravity backgrounds and show by a
numerical analysis the existence of instabilities under linear fluctuations for
classical string embedding solutions having positive length function derivative
. Finally we make a brief discussion of 't Hooft loops in
non-conformal backgrounds.Comment: 34 pages, 36 figures. Reference added. Final version JHEP accepte
Running Scaling Dimensions in Holographic Renormalization Group Flows
Holographic renormalization group flows can be interpreted in terms of
effective field theory. Based on such an interpretation, a formula for the
running scaling dimensions of gauge-invariant operators along such flows is
proposed. The formula is checked for some simple examples from the AdS/CFT
correspondence, but can be applied also in non-AdS/non-CFT cases.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Holographic Kondo Model in Various Dimensions
We study the addition of localised impurities to U(N) Supersymmetric
Yang-Mills theories in (p+1)-dimensions by using the gauge/gravity
correspondence. From the gravity side, the impurities are introduced by
considering probe D(8-p)-branes extendingalong the time and radial directions
and wrapping an (7-p)-dimensional submanifold of the internal (8-p)-sphere, so
that the degrees of freedom are point-like from the gauge theory perspective.
We analyse both the configuration in which the branes generate straight flux
tubes -corresponding to actual single impurities - and the one in which
connected flux tubes are created- corresponding to dimers. We discuss the
thermodynamics of both the configurations and the related phase transition. In
particular, the specific heat of the straight flux-tube configuration is
negative for p<3, while it is never the case for the connected one. We study
the stability of the system by looking at the impurity fluctuations. Finally,
we characterise the theory by computing one- and two-point correlators of the
gauge theory operators dual to the impurity fluctuations. Because of the
underlying generalised conformal structure, such correlators can be expressed
in terms of an effective coupling constant (which runs because of its
dimensionality) and a generalised conformal dimension.Comment: 56 pages, 3 figures; v2: typos correcte
Correlation Functions of Large N Chern-Simons-Matter Theories and Bosonization in Three Dimensions
We consider the conformal field theory of N complex massless scalars in 2+1
dimensions, coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k. This theory has a
't Hooft large N limit, keeping fixed \lambda = N/k. We compute some
correlation functions in this theory exactly as a function of \lambda, in the
large N (planar) limit. We show that the results match with the general
predictions of Maldacena and Zhiboedov for the correlators of theories that
have high-spin symmetries in the large N limit. It has been suggested in the
past that this theory is dual (in the large N limit) to the Legendre transform
of the theory of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field, and our
results allow us to find the precise mapping between the two theories. We find
that in the large N limit the theory of N scalars coupled to a U(N)_k
Chern-Simons theory is equivalent to the Legendre transform of the theory of k
fermions coupled to a U(k)_N Chern-Simons theory, thus providing a bosonization
of the latter theory. We conjecture that perhaps this duality is valid also for
finite values of N and k, where on the fermionic side we should now have (for
N_f flavors) a U(k)_{N-N_f/2} theory. Similar results hold for real scalars
(fermions) coupled to the O(N)_k Chern-Simons theory.Comment: 49 pages, 16 figures. v2: added reference
Chiral Symmetry Breaking and External Fields in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein Model
A novel holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking has been proposed by
Kuperstein and Sonnenschein by embedding non-supersymmetric probe D7 and
anti-D7 branes in the Klebanov-Witten background. We study the dynamics of the
probe flavours in this model in the presence of finite temperature and a
constant electromagnetic field. In keeping with the weakly coupled field theory
intuition, we find the magnetic field promotes spontaneous breaking of chiral
symmetry whereas the electric field restores it. The former effect is
universally known as the "magnetic catalysis" in chiral symmetry breaking. In
the presence of an electric field such a condensation is inhibited and a
current flows. Thus we are faced with a steady-state situation rather than a
system in equilibrium. We conjecture a definition of thermodynamic free energy
for this steady-state phase and using this proposal we study the detailed phase
structure when both electric and magnetic fields are present in two
representative configurations: mutually perpendicular and parallel.Comment: 50 pages, multiple figures, minor typo fixed, references adde
