An architecture for the MSAT mobile data system
The Mobile Satellite (MSAT) Mobile Data System (MDS) will offer a wide range of packet switched data services. The characteristics and requirements of the services are briefly examined. A proposed architecture to implement these services is presented along with its connectivity requirements. A description of the inbound and outbound channels is provided which are based upon the signalling for the circuit switched services. Additionally, the duties of the Network Management System are examined
Passive and active seismic isolation for gravitational radiation detectors and other instruments
Some new passive and active methods for reducing the effects of seismic disturbances on suspended masses are described, with special reference to gravitational radiation detectors in which differential horizontal motions of two or more suspended test masses are monitored. In these methods it is important to be able to determine horizontal seismic accelerations independent of tilts of the ground. Measurement of changes in inclination of the suspension wire of a test mass, relative to a direction defined by a reference arm of long period of oscillation, makes it possible to carry this out over the frequency range of interest for earth-based gravitational radiation detectors. The signal obtained can then be used to compensate for the effects of seismic disturbances on the test mass if necessary. Alternatively the signal corresponding to horizontal acceleration can be used to move the point from which the test mass is suspended in such a way as to reduce the effect of the seismic disturbance and also damp pendulum motions of the suspended test mass. Melhoramento genético em abelhas. II. Teoria e avaliação de alguns métodos de seleção.
Apresentaram-se quatro metodos para se proceder a selecao, visando mais alta producao de mel em abelhas (tanto Apis mellifera como meliponideos, calcula-se o progresso esperado em cada um, analisam-se os componentes de variancia e definem-se os coeficientes de herdabilidade. Os metodos propostos sao os seguintes, exemplificandos supondo-se coeficientes de herdabilidade. h 2/1 = 0,40 e h 2/2 = 0,60: 1). Em populacoes de meliponideos - substituir as rainhas das piores colonias pelas melhores rainhas; as rainhas virgens das melhores colmeias voarao, se acasalarao e iniciarao postura. Supondo-se substituicao das 25% piores pelas 25% melhores, obtem-se um aumento de 15% por geracao; 2) Em populacao de Apis - substituir 25% das rainhas das piores colmeias por rainhas virgens provenientes das 25% melhores. O aumento esperado, nas condicoes expostas, e de 20% por geracao; 3) E igual ao numero 2, porem colocando-se quadro de zangoes em 25% das melhores colmeias. Se a substituicao, por esses machos selecionados, na nuvem de machos que fecundam as rainhas do apiario for 50%, entao o progresso esperado sera de 30%; 4) Quando 25% das melhores colonias recebem quadros de zangoes, e se estes alcancaram 50% da populacao de zangoes o progresso sera de 10% por geracao
The energy budget in Rayleigh-Benard convection
It is shown using three series of Rayleigh number simulations of varying
aspect ratio AR and Prandtl number Pr that the normalized dissipation at the
wall, while significantly greater than 1, approaches a constant dependent upon
AR and Pr. It is also found that the peak velocity, not the mean square
velocity, obeys the experimental scaling of Ra^{0.5}. The scaling of the mean
square velocity is closer to Ra^{0.46}, which is shown to be consistent with
experimental measurements and the numerical results for the scaling of Nu and
the temperature if there are strong correlations between the velocity and

Contemporary outcome measures in acute stroke research: choice of primary outcome measure
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
The diversity of available outcome measures for acute stroke trials is challenging and implies that the scales may be imperfect. To assist researchers planning trials and to aid interpretation, this article reviews and makes recommendations on the available choices of scales. The aim is to identify an approach that will be universally accepted and that should be included in most acute trials, without seeking to restrict options for special circumstances.
METHODS:
The article considers outcome measures that have been widely used or are currently advised. It examines desirable properties for outcome measures such as validity, relevance, responsiveness, statistical properties, availability of training, cultural and language issues, resistance to comorbidity, as well as potential weaknesses. Tracking and agreement among outcomes are covered.
RESULTS:
Typical ranges of scores for the common scales are described, along with their statistical properties, which in turn influence optimal analytic techniques. The timing of recovery on scores and usual practice in trial design are considered.
CONCLUSIONS:
The preferred outcome measure for acute trials is the modified Rankin Scale, assessed at 3 months after stroke onset or later. The interview should be conducted by a certified rater and should involve both the patient and any relevant caregiver. Incremental benefits at any level of the modified Rankin Scale may be acceptable. The modified Rankin Scale is imperfect but should be retained in its present form for comparability with existing treatment comparisons. No second measure should be required, but correlations with supporting scales may be used to confirm consistency in direction of effects on other measures

Charged Rotating Black Holes on a 3-Brane
We study exact stationary and axisymmetric solutions describing charged
rotating black holes localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld.
The charges of the black holes are considered to be of two types, the first
being an induced tidal charge that appears as an imprint of nonlocal
gravitational effects from the bulk space and the second is a usual electric
charge arising due to a Maxwell field trapped on the brane. We assume a special
ansatz for the metric on the brane taking it to be of the Kerr-Schild form and
show that the Kerr-Newman solution of ordinary general relativity in which the
electric charge is superceded by a tidal charge satisfies a closed system of
the effective gravitational field equations on the brane. It turns out that the
negative tidal charge may provide a mechanism for spinning up the black hole so
that its rotation parameter exceeds its mass. This is not allowed in the
framework of general relativity. We also find a new solution that represents a
rotating black hole on the brane carrying both charges. We show that for a
rapid enough rotation the combined influence of the rotational dynamics and the
local bulk effects of the "squared" energy momentum tensor on the brane distort
the horizon structure of the black hole in such a way that it can be thought of
as composed of non-uniformly rotating null circles with growing radii from the
equatorial plane to the poles. We finally study the geodesic motion of test
particles in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole with tidal charge.
We show that the effects of negative tidal charge tend to increase the horizon
radius, as well as the radii of the limiting photon orbit, the innermost bound
and the innermost stable circular orbits for both direct and retrograde motions

Emergence of the Shackleton Range from beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet due to glacial erosion
This paper explores the long-term evolution of a subglacial fjord landscape in the Shackleton Range, Antarctica. We propose that prolonged ice-sheet erosion across a passive continental margin caused troughs to deepen and lower the surrounding ice-sheet surface, leaving adjacent mountains exposed. Geomorphological evidence suggests a change in the direction of regional ice flow accompanied emergence. Simple calculations suggest that isostatic compensation caused by the deepening of bounding ice-stream troughs lowered the ice-sheet surface relative to the mountains by ~800m. Use of multiple cosmogenic isotopes on bedrock and erratics (26Al, 10Be, 21Ne) provides evidence that overriding of the massif and the deepening of the adjacent troughs occurred earlier than the Quaternary. Perhaps this occurred in the mid-Miocene, as elsewhere in East Antarctica in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and the Lambert basin. The implication is that glacial erosion instigates feedback that can change ice-sheet thickness, extent, and direction of flow. Indeed, as the subglacial troughs evolve over millions of years, they increase topographic relief; and this changes the dynamics of the ice sheet. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
Errors in kinematic distances and our image of the Milky Way Galaxy
Errors in the kinematic distances, under the assumption of circular gas
orbits, were estimated by performing synthetic observations of a model disk
galaxy. It was found that the error is < 0.5 kpc for most of the disk when the
measured rotation curve was used, but larger if the real rotation curve is
applied. In both cases, the error is significantly larger at the positions of
the spiral arms. The error structure is such that, when kinematic distances are
used to develope a picture of the large scale density distribution, the most
significant features of the numerical model are significantly distorted or
absent, while spurious structure appears. By considering the full velocity
field in the calculation of the kinematic distances, most of the original
density structures can be recovered.Comment: Accepted for publication in A
