Magnetization Losses in Multifilament Coated Superconductors
We report the results of a study of the magnetization losses in experimental
multifilament, as well as control (uniform), coated superconductors exposed to
time-varying magnetic field of various frequencies. Both the hysteresis loss,
proportional to the sweep rate of the applied magnetic field, and the coupling
loss, proportional to the square of the sweep rate, have been observed. A
scaling is found that allows us to quantify each of these contributions and
extrapolate the results of the experiment beyond the envelope of accessible
field amplitude and frequency. The combined loss in the multifilament conductor
is reduced by about 90% in comparison with the uniform conductor at full field
penetration at sweep rate as high as 3T/s
Age of the Universe: Influence of the Inhomogeneities on the global Expansion-Factor
For the first time we calculate quantitatively the influence of
inhomogeneities on the global expansion factor by averaging the Friedmann
equation. In the framework of the relativistic second-order
Zel'dovich-approximation scheme for irrotational dust we use observational
results in form of the normalisation constant fixed by the COBE results and we
check different power spectra, namely for adiabatic CDM, isocurvature CDM, HDM,
WDM, Strings and Textures. We find that the influence of the inhomogeneities on
the global expansion factor is very small. So the error in determining the age
of the universe using the Hubble constant in the usual way is negligible. This
does not imply that the effect is negligible for local astronomical
measurements of the Hubble constant. Locally the determination of the
redshift-distance relation can be strongly influenced by the peculiar velocity
fields due to inhomogeneities. Our calculation does not consider such effects,
but is contrained to comparing globally homogeneous and averaged inhomogeneous

Critical Crossover Between Yosida-Kondo Dominant Regime and Magnetic Frustration Dominant Regime in the System of a Magnetic Trimer on a Metal Surface
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations were carried out for the system of a magnetic
trimer on a metal surface. The magnetic trimer is arranged in two geometric
configurations, viz., isosceles and equilateral triangles. The calculated
spectral density and magnetic susceptibility show the existence of two phases:
Yosida-Kondo dominant phase and magnetic frustration dominant phase.
Furthermore, a critical transition between these two phases can be induced by
changing the configuration of the magnetic trimers from isosceles to

High-energy photoemission on Fe3O4: Small polaron physics and the Verwey transition
We have studied the electronic structure and charge ordering (Verwey)
transition of magnetite (Fe3O4) by soft x-ray photoemission. Due to the
enhanced probing depth and the use of different surface preparations we are
able to distinguish surface and volume effects in the spectra. The pseudogap
behavior of the intrinsic spectra and its temperature dependence give evidence
for the existence of strongly bound small polarons consistent with both dc and
optical conductivity. Together with other recent structural and theoretical
results our findings support a picture in which the Verwey transition contains
elements of a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect, stabilized by local Coulomb
interaction
Experimental observation of three-color optical quantum correlations
Quantum correlations between bright pump, signal, and idler beams produced by
an optical parametric oscillator, all with different frequencies, are
experimentally demonstrated. We show that the degree of entanglement between
signal and idler fields is improved by using information of pump fluctuations.
This is the first observation of three-color optical quantum correlations.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Lagrangian description of fluid flow with pressure in relativistic cosmology
The Lagrangian description of fluid flow in relativistic cosmology is
extended to the case of flow accelerated by pressure. In the description, the
entropy and the vorticity are obtained exactly for the barotropic equation of
state. In order to determine the metric, the Einstein equation is solved
perturbatively, when metric fluctuations are small but entropy inhomogeneities
are large. Thus, the present formalism is applicable to the case when the

Orientational order parameters of a de Vries–type ferroelectric liquid crystal obtained by polarized Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction
The orientational order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉 of the ferroelectric, de Vries–type liquid crystal 9HL have been determined in the SmA* and SmC* phases by means of polarized Raman spectroscopy, and in the SmA* phase using x-ray diffraction. Quantum density functional theory predicts Raman spectra for 9HL that are in good agreement with the observations and indicates that the strong Raman band probed in the experiment corresponds to the uniaxial, coupled vibration of the three phenyl rings along the molecular long axis. The magnitudes of the orientational order parameters obtained in the Raman and x-ray experiments differ dramatically from each other, a discrepancy that is resolved by considering that the two techniques probe the orientational distributions of different molecular axes. We have developed a systematic procedure in which we calculate the angle between these axes and rescale the orientational order parameters obtained from x-ray scattering with results that are then in good agreement with the Raman data. At least in the case of 9HL, the results obtained by both techniques support a “sugar loaf” orientational distribution in the SmA* phase with no qualitative difference to conventional smectics A. Quantum state of an injected TROPO above threshold : purity, Glauber function and photon number distribution
In this paper we investigate several properties of the full signal-idler-pump
mode quantum state generated by a triply resonant non-degenerate Optical
Parametric Oscillator operating above threshold, with an injected wave on the
signal and idler modes in order to lock the phase diffusion process. We
determine and discuss the spectral purity of this state, which turns out not to
be always equal to 1 even though the three interacting modes have been taken
into account at the quantum level. We have seen that the purity is essentially
dependent on the weak intensity of the injected light and on an asymmetry of
the synchronization. We then derive the expression of its total three-mode
Glauber P-function, and calculate the joint signal-idler photon number
probability distribution and investigate their dependence on the injection
Clinical and neural effects of six-week administration of oxytocin on core symptoms of autism
Autism spectrum disorder is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder with no established pharmacological treatment for its core symptoms. Although previous literature has shown that single-dose administration of oxytocin temporally mitigates autistic social behaviours in experimental settings, it remains in dispute whether such potentially beneficial responses in laboratories can result in clinically positive effects in daily life situations, which are measurable only in long-term observations of individuals with the developmental disorder undergoing continual oxytocin administration. Here, to address this issue, we performed an exploratory, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial including 20 high-functional adult males with autism spectrum disorder. Data obtained from 18 participants who completed the trial showed that 6-week intranasal administration of oxytocin significantly reduced autism core symptoms specific to social reciprocity, which was clinically evaluated by Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale (P = 0.034, PFDR < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.78). Critically, the improvement of this clinical score was accompanied by oxytocin-induced enhancement of task-independent resting-state functional connectivity between anterior cingulate cortex and dorso-medial prefrontal cortex (rho = -0.60, P = 0.011), which was measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Moreover, using the same social-judgement task as used in our previous single-dose oxytocin trial, we confirmed that the current continual administration also significantly mitigated behavioural and neural responses during the task, both of which were originally impaired in autistic individuals (judgement tendency: P = 0.019, d = 0.62; eye-gaze effect: P = 0.03, d = 0.56; anterior cingulate activity: P = 0.00069, d = 0.97; dorso-medial prefrontal activity: P = 0.0014, d = 0.92; all, PFDR < 0.05). Furthermore, despite its longer administration, these effect sizes of the 6-week intervention were not larger than those seen in our previous single-dose intervention. These findings not only provide the evidence for clinically beneficial effects of continual oxytocin administration on the core social symptoms of autism spectrum disorder with suggesting its underlying biological mechanisms, but also highlight the necessity to seek optimal regimens of continual oxytocin treatment in future studies
Mitigation of sociocommunicational deficits of autism through oxytocin-induced recovery of medial prefrontal activity: a randomized trial
IMPORTANCE: Sociocommunicational deficits make it difficult for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to understand communication content with conflicting verbal and nonverbal information. Despite growing prospects for oxytocin as a therapeutic agent for ASD, no direct neurobiological evidence exists for oxytocin's beneficial effects on this core symptom of ASD. This is slowing clinical application of the neuropeptide. OBJECTIVE: To directly examine whether oxytocin has beneficial effects on the sociocommunicational deficits of ASD using both behavioral and neural measures. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: At the University of Tokyo Hospital, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject-crossover, single-site experimental trial in which intranasal oxytocin and placebo were administered. A total of 40 highly functioning men with ASD participated and were randomized in the trial. INTERVENTIONS: Single-dose intranasal administration of oxytocin (24 IU) and placebo. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined effects of oxytocin on behavioral neural responses of the participants to a social psychological task. In our previous case-control study using the same psychological task, when making decisions about social information with conflicting verbal and nonverbal contents, participants with ASD made judgments based on nonverbal contents less frequently with longer time and could not induce enough activation in the medial prefrontal cortex. Therefore, our main outcomes and measures were the frequency of the nonverbal information-based judgments (NVJs), the response time for NVJs, and brain activity of the medial prefrontal cortex during NVJs. RESULTS: Intranasal oxytocin enabled the participants to make NVJs more frequently (P = .03) with shorter response time (P = .02). During the mitigated behavior, oxytocin increased the originally diminished brain activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (P < .001). Moreover, oxytocin enhanced functional coordination in the area (P < .001), and the magnitude of these neural effects was predictive of the behavioral effects (P ≤ .01). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: These findings provide the first neurobiological evidence for oxytocin's beneficial effects on sociocommunicational deficits of ASD and give us the initial account for neurobiological mechanisms underlying any beneficial effects of the neuropeptide.
