Lane-formation vs. cluster-formation in two dimensional square-shoulder systems: A genetic algorithm approach
Introducing genetic algorithms as a reliable and efficient tool to find
ordered equilibrium structures, we predict minimum energy configurations of the
square shoulder system for different values of corona width . Varying
systematically the pressure for different values of we obtain
complete sequences of minimum energy configurations which provide a deeper
understanding of the system's strategies to arrange particles in an
energetically optimized fashion, leading to the competing self-assembly
scenarios of cluster-formation vs. lane-formation.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Optimal Fourier Inversion in Semi-analytical Option Pricing
At the time of writing this article, Fourier inversion is the computational method of choice for a fast and accurate calculation of plain vanilla option prices in models with an analytically available characteristic function. Shifting the contour of integration along the complex plane allows for different representations of the inverse Fourier integral. In this article, we present the optimal contour of the Fourier integral, taking into account numerical issues such as cancellation and explosion of the characteristic function. This allows for robust and fast option pricing for almost all levels of strikes and maturities
Why the Rotation Count Algorithm Works
The characteristic functions of many affine jump-diffusion models, such as Heston’s stochastic volatility model and all of its extensions, involve multivalued functions such as the complex logarithm. If we restrict the logarithm to its principal branch, as is done in most software packages, the characteristic function can become discontinuous, leading to completely wrong option prices if options are priced by Fourier inversion. In this paper we prove under non-restrictive conditions on the parameters that the rotation count algorithm of Kahl and Jäckel chooses the correct branch of the complex logarithm. Under the same restrictions we prove that in an alternative formulation of the characteristic function the principal branch is the correct one. Seen as this formulation is easier to implement and numerically more stable than Heston’s formulation, it should be the preferred one. The remainder of this paper shows how complex discontinuities can be avoided in the Schöbel-Zhu model and the exact simulation algorithm of the Heston model, recently proposed by Broadie and Kaya. Finally, we show that Matytsin’s SVJJ model has a closed-form characteristic function, though the complex discontinuities that arise there due to the branch switching of the exponential integral cannot be avoided under all circumstances
Table Facilitators' Reflections Regarding their Interprofessional Core Competencies
Background: Providing students and practitioners opportunities to learn from other disciplines in a supportive environment has the potential to improve patient outcomes and practitioner job satisfaction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe an annual Interprofessional Education Event offered in a university setting and explore participant views regarding their competencies based on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative’s four core competency domains: Values/ethics for interprofessional practice, roles/responsibilities,
interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork.
Method: Twenty-six faculty and students participated in preparatory activities and served as table facilitators for a large case study event. After the session, twenty submitted survey responses reflecting on changes in their interprofessional
competencies.
Discussion: Table facilitators reported that their core competencies in all areas remained stable or improved as a result of their participation in the pre-planning stages and case study workshop. Participant comments indicated the importance of initiating interprofessional education during academic training and to continue it throughout an individual’s career. Future directions include pre-event competency assessments and longer-term follow-up with participants
A Survey of Best Monotone Degree Conditions for Graph Properties
We survey sufficient degree conditions, for a variety of graph properties,
that are best possible in the same sense that Chvatal's well-known degree
condition for hamiltonicity is best possible.Comment: 25 page
Dynamical and quasistatic structural relaxation paths in Pd_(40)Ni_(40)P_(20) glass
By sequential heat treatment of a Pd_(40)Ni_(40)P_(20) metallic glass at temperatures and durations for which
α-relaxation is not possible, dynamic, and quasistatic relaxation paths below the glass transition are
identified via ex situ ultrasonic measurements following each heat treatment. The dynamic
relaxation paths are associated with hopping between nonequilibrium potential energy states of the
glass, while the quasistatic relaxation path is associated with reversible β-relaxation events toward
quasiequilibrium states. These quasiequilibrium states are identified with secondary potential energy
minima that exist within the inherent energy minimum of the glass, thereby supporting the concept
of the sub-basin/metabasin organization of the potential-energy landscape
Optical spectroscopy of complex open 4-shell ions Sn-Sn
We analyze the complex level structure of ions with many-valence-electron
open [Kr] 4 sub-shells (=7-4) with ab initio
calculations based on configuration-interaction many-body perturbation theory
(CI+MBPT). Charge-state-resolved optical and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra
of Sn-Sn ions were obtained using an electron beam ion trap.
Semi-empirical spectral fits carried out with the orthogonal parameters
technique and Cowan code calculations lead to 90 identifications of
magnetic-dipole transitions and the determination of 79 energy
ground-configuration levels, questioning some earlier EUV-line assignments. Our
results, the most complete data set available to date for these ground
configurations, confirm the ab initio predictive power of CI+MBPT calculations
for the these complex electronic systems.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
