    Socioeconomic inequalities in attitudes towards cancer: an international cancer benchmarking partnership study.

    Socioeconomic status (SES) differences in attitudes towards cancer have been implicated in the differential screening uptake and the timeliness of symptomatic presentation. However, the predominant emphasis of this work has been on cancer fatalism, and many studies focus on specific community subgroups. This study aimed to assess SES differences in positive and negative attitudes towards cancer in UK adults. A population-based sample of UK adults (n=6965, age≥50 years) completed the Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer scale, including six belief items: three positively framed (e.g. 'Cancer can often be cured') and three negatively framed (e.g. 'A cancer diagnosis is a death sentence'). SES was indexed by education. Analyses controlled for sex, ethnicity, marital status, age, self-rated health, and cancer experience. There were few education-level differences for the positive statements, and overall agreement was high (all>90%). In contrast, there were strong differences for negative statements (all Ps<0.001). Among respondents with lower education levels, 57% agreed that 'treatment is worse than cancer', 27% that cancer is 'a death sentence' and 16% 'would not want to know if I have cancer'. Among those with university education, the respective proportions were 34, 17 and 6%. Differences were not explained by cancer experience or health status. In conclusion, positive statements about cancer outcomes attract near-universal agreement. However, this optimistic perspective coexists alongside widespread fears about survival and treatment, especially among less-educated groups. Health education campaigns targeting socioeconomically disadvantaged groups might benefit from a focus on reducing negative attitudes, which is not necessarily achieved by promoting positive attitudes

    MRE11 facilitates the removal of human topoisomerase II complexes from genomic DNA

    Topoisomerase II creates a double-strand break intermediate with topoisomerase covalently coupled to the DNA via a 5'-phosphotyrosyl bond. These intermediate complexes can become cytotoxic protein-DNA adducts and DSB repair at these lesions requires removal of topoisomerase II. To analyse removal of topoisomerase II from genomic DNA we adapted the trapped in agarose DNA immunostaining assay. Recombinant MRE11 from 2 sources removed topoisomerase IIalpha from genomic DNA in vitro, as did MRE11 immunoprecipitates isolated from A-TLD or K562 cells. Basal topoisomerase II complex levels were very high in A-TLD cells lacking full-length wild type MRE11, suggesting that MRE11 facilitates the processing of topoisomerase complexes that arise as part of normal cellular metabolism.     CopyRNeRF: Protecting the CopyRight of Neural Radiance Fields

    Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have the potential to be a major representation of media. Since training a NeRF has never been an easy task, the protection of its model copyright should be a priority. In this paper, by analyzing the pros and cons of possible copyright protection solutions, we propose to protect the copyright of NeRF models by replacing the original color representation in NeRF with a watermarked color representation. Then, a distortion-resistant rendering scheme is designed to guarantee robust message extraction in 2D renderings of NeRF.     Rivastigmine in Chinese patients with subcortical vascular dementia

Outcome measures were cognition (mini-mental state examination, frontal assessment battery), neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI), instrumental activities of daily living, clinical dementia rating scale, and adverse events.Results: No statistical significant benefit could be observed in the active group in any of the efficacy measures. A trend favoring active group was observed only in the NPI subscore of irritability (p = 0.066) and aberrant motor behavior (p = 0.068). Withdrawal rate was 30% and 15% in the active and placebo group, respectively.Conclusion: Among Chinese subcortical vascular dementia patients, there was no apparent cognitive benefit associated with use of rivastigmine over the 6 months period. A trend favoring rivastigmine was observed in certain behavioral measures.     CoAIcoder: Examining the Effectiveness of AI-assisted Collaborative Qualitative Analysis

    While the domain of individual-level AI-assisted analysis has been extensively explored in previous studies, the field of AI-assisted collaborative qualitative analysis remains relatively unexplored. After identifying CQA practices and design opportunities through formative interviews, we introduce our collaborative qualitative coding tool, CoAIcoder, and designed the four different collaboration methods. We subsequently implemented a between-subject design involving 32 pairs of users who have undergone training in CQA across three commonly utilized phases under four methods. Our results suggest that CoAIcoder, which employs AI and a Shared Model, could potentially improve the efficiency of the coding process in CQA by fostering a quicker shared understanding and promoting early-stage discussions. However, this may come with the potential downside of reduced code diversity. We also underscored the existence of a trade-off between the level of independence and the coding outcome when humans collaborate during the early coding stages. Lastly, we identify design implications that could inspire and inform the future design of CQA systems

    Haemogenic endocardium contributes to transient definitive haematopoiesis.

    Haematopoietic cells arise from spatiotemporally restricted domains in the developing embryo. Although studies of non-mammalian animal and in vitro embryonic stem cell models suggest a close relationship among cardiac, endocardial and haematopoietic lineages, it remains unknown whether the mammalian heart tube serves as a haemogenic organ akin to the dorsal aorta. Here we examine the haemogenic activity of the developing endocardium. Mouse heart explants generate myeloid and erythroid colonies in the absence of circulation. Haemogenic activity arises from a subset of endocardial cells in the outflow cushion and atria earlier than in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros region, and is transient and definitive in nature. Interestingly, key cardiac transcription factors, Nkx2-5 and Isl1, are expressed in and required for the haemogenic population of the endocardium. Together, these data suggest that a subset of endocardial/endothelial cells serve as a de novo source for transient definitive haematopoietic progenitors

    Molybdena on titania : I. Preparation and characterization by Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy

    Titania-supported molybdenum and cobalt-molybdenum catalysts were prepared by the dry impregnation and equilibrium adsorption techniques. Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were used to follow the changes the catalysts underwent during the drying and calcination stages. The results indicate that the nature of the surface species depends on the loading, pH of the starting solution and the method of catalyst loading. It was found, for coverages calculated to be less than a monolayer, that the main surface species are tetrahedral molybdates. As the loading increases, octahedrally coordinated polymeric surface species form. Above the monolayer coverage, MoO3 is also formed. After calcination the spectra of catalysts prepared by the equilibrium adsorption technique change much less than those for catalysts prepared by the dry impregnation technique. Addition of cobalt to titania-supported molybdenum catalysts suppresses the formation of bulk MoO3 and leads to the formation of a cobalt molybdate phase.     Spectroscopic and scattering investigation of isopoly-molybdate and tungstate solutions

    Detailed spectroscopic and scattering investigations of isopoly-molybdate and -tungstate solutions as a function of concentration and pH were made. From scattering results the apparent molecular weights were determined as a function of time and concentration. We find that the result agree with the aggregation scheme of simple --&gt; hepta --&gt; octa --&gt; [Mo36O112]-8 --&gt; protonated polymeric species, for molybdate solutions. Tungstate solutions aggregate according to simple --&gt; Y-polytungstate --&gt; paratungstate-A --&gt; paratungstate-B --&gt; [Psi]-metatungstate. The molybdate solutions exhibited very rapid equilibration, but the tungstate solutions required several days to reach equilibrium. From the discrete changes in the Raman spectra of both systems we find that the formation of isopoly anions is not a continuous process and that only certain species are present in solution.
