g_{rho sigma gamma} coupling constant in light cone QCD
The coupling constant g_{rho sigma gamma} is determined from light cone QCD
sum rules. A comparison of our result with the ones existing in literature is

On the precision of the theoretical predictions for pi pi scattering
In a recent paper, Pelaez and Yndurain evaluate some of the low energy
observables of pi pi scattering and obtain flat disagreement with our earlier
results. The authors work with unsubtracted dispersion relations, so that their
results are very sensitive to the poorly known high energy behaviour of the
scattering amplitude. They claim that the asymptotic representation we used is
incorrect and propose an alternative one. We repeat their calculations on the
basis of the standard, subtracted fixed-t dispersion relations, using their
asymptotics. The outcome fully confirms our earlier findings. Moreover, we show
that the Regge parametrization proposed by these authors for the region above
1.4 GeV violates crossing symmetry: Their ansatz is not consistent with the
behaviour observed at low energies.Comment: Added more material, mostly in Sects. 7, 8 and 9, in support of the

Cough mixture abuse as a novel cause of folate deficiency: a prospective, community-based, controlled study
Cough mixture abuse has been reported to cause severe folate deficiency and neurological defects. We carried out a prospective case-controlled survey to confirm this association and define the incidence and severity of the problem. A total of 57 cough mixture abusers and 47 other substance abusers (controls) were studied. When compared with controls, cough mixture abusers had a high incidence of low folate levels that could only be detected by screening
UNDERSTANDING THE SCALAR MESON NONET
It is shown that one can fit the available data on the a0(980), f0(980),
f0(1300) and K*0(1430) mesons as a distorted 0++ qq bar nonet using very few
(5-6) parameters and an improved version of the unitarized quark model. This
includes all light two-pseudoscalar thresholds, constraints from Adler zeroes,
flavour symmetric couplings, unitarity and physically acceptable analyticity.
The parameters include a bare uu bar or dd bar mass, an over-all coupling
constant, a cutoff and a strange quark mass of 100 MeV, which is in accord with
expectations from the quark model.
It is found that in particular for the a0(980) and f0(980) the KK bar
component in the wave function is large, i.e., for a large fraction of the time
the qq bar state is transformed into a virtual KK bar pair. This KK bar
component, together with a similar component of eta' pi for the a0(980) , and
eta eta, eta eta' and eta' eta' components for the f0(980), causes the
substantial shift to a lower mass than what is naively expected from the qq bar
component alone.
Mass, width and mixing parameters, including sheet and pole positions, of the
four resonances are given, with a detailed pedagogical discussion of their

The light sigma meson
In the framework of the dispersion relation N/D-approach, we restore the
low-energy pi-pi (IJ^{PC}=00^{++})-wave amplitude sewing it with the previously
obtained K-matrix solution for the region 450-1900 MeV. The restored
N/D-amplitude has a pole on the second sheet of the complex-s plane near the

Partial-wave analysis of the eta pi+ pi- system produced in the reaction pi-p --> eta pi+ pi- n at 18 GeV/c
A partial-wave analysis of 9082 eta pi+ pi- n events produced in the reaction
pi- p --> eta pi+ pi- n at 18.3 GeV/c has been carried out using data from
experiment 852 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are dominated by
J^{PC} = 0^{-+} partial waves consistent with observation of the eta(1295) and
the eta(1440). The mass and width of the eta(1295) were determined to be 1282
+- 5 MeV and 66 +- 13 Mev respectively while the eta(1440) was observed with a
mass of 1404 +- 6 MeV and width of 80 +- 21 MeV. Other partial waves of
importance include the 1++ and the 1+- waves. Results of the partial wave
analysis are combined with results of other experiments to estimate f1(1285)
branching fractions. These values are considerably different from current
values determined without the aid of amplitude analyses.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

Nonequilibrium Quantum Dynamics Of Disoriented Chiral Condensates
The nonequilibrium dynamics of the chiral phase transition expected during
the expansion of the quark-qluon plasma produced in a high energy hadron or
heavy ion collision is studied in the O(4) linear sigma model to leading order
in a large expansion. Starting from an approximate equilibrium
configuration at an initial proper time in the disordered phase we study
the transition to the ordered broken symmetry phase as the system expands and
cools. We give results for the proper time evolution of the effective pion
mass, the order parameter as well as for the pion two point
correlation function expressed in terms of a time dependent phase space number
density and pair correlation density. We determine the phase space of initial
conditions that lead to instabilities (exponentially growing long wave length
modes) as the system evolves in time. These instabilities are what eventually
lead to disoriented chiral condensates. In our simulations,we found that
instabilities that are formed during the initial phases of the expansion exist
for proper times that are at most and lead to condensate regions that
do not contain large numbers of particles. The damping of instabilities is a
consequence of strong coupling.Comment: 49 pages, figures available by reques

We reconsider Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es (MO) dispersive representations of
photon-photon scattering to two pions, motivated by the very high statistics
results recently released by the Belle collaboration for charged as well as
neutral pion pairs and also by recent progress in the determination of the
low-energy scattering amplitude. Applicability of this formalism is
extended beyond 1 GeV by taking into account inelasticity due to . A
modified MO representation is derived which has the advantage that all
polynomial ambiguities are collected into the subtraction constants and have
simple relations to pion polarizabilities. It is obtained by treating
differently the exactly known QED Born term and the other components of the
left-hand cut. These components are approximated by a sum over resonances. All
resonances up to spin two and masses up to GeV are included. The
tensor contributions to the left-hand cut are found to be numerically
important. We perform fits to the data imposing chiral constraints, in
particular, using a model independent sum rule result on the chiral
coupling . Such theoretical constraints are necessary because the
experimental errors are dominantly systematic. Results on further
couplings and pion dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities are then derived from
the fit. The relevance of the new data for distinguishing between two possible
scenarios of isospin breaking in the region is discussed.Comment: 44 pages, 12 figure
