    Endothelin and the ischaemic heart

    Soon after its identification as a powerful vasoconstrictor peptide, endothelin (ET-1) was implicated as a detrimental agent involved in determining the outcome of myocardial ischaemia and reperfusion. Early experimental studies demonstrated that ETA selective and mixed ETA/ETB receptor antagonists can reduce infarct size and prevent ischaemiainduced ventricular arrhythmias in models of ischaemia/reperfusion, implying that ET-1 acts through the ETA receptor to contribute to injury and arrhythmogenesis. However, as our understanding of the physiology of ET-1 has expanded, the role of ET-1 in the ischaemic heart appears ever more complex. Recent evidence suggests that ET-1 exerts actions on the heart that are not only detrimental (vasoconstriction, inhibition of NO production, activation of inflammatory cells), but which may also contribute to tissue repair, such as inhibition of cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In addition, ET-1-induced mast cell degranulation has been linked to a homeostatic mechanism that controls endogenous ET-1 levels, which may have important implications for the ischaemic heart. Furthermore the mechanism by which ET-1 promotes arrhythmogenesis remains controversial. Some studies imply a direct electrophysiological effect of ET-1, via ETA receptors, to increase monophasic action potential duration (MAPD) and induce early after-depolarisations (EADs), while other studies support the view that coronary constriction resulting in ischaemia is the basis for the generation of arrhythmias. Moreover, ET-1 can induce cardioprotection (precondition) against infarct size and ventricular arrhythmias, through as yet incompletely understood mechanisms. To enable us to identify the most appropriate means of targeting this system in a therapeutically meaningful way we need to continue to explore the physiology of ET-1, both in the normal and the ischaemic heart

    Personality characteristics are independently associated with prospective memory in the laboratory, and in daily life, among older adults

    Prospective memory (PM) can deteriorate with age and adversely influence health behaviours. Research suggests that personality is related to PM in healthy young adults, but we know little about the role of personality in the PM amongst older adults. Community-dwelling older adults (N=152) completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 and PM measures. After adjusting for demographics and general cognition, higher neuroticism and lower levels of openness were independently associated with lower objectively-measured time- and event-based PM. Lower conscientiousness was the only personality predictor of self-reported everyday PM failures. Findings indicate that personality plays a role in PM functioning in the laboratory and daily life

    Increasing Neff with particles in thermal equilibrium with neutrinos

    Recent work on increasing the effective number of neutrino species (Neff) in the early universe has focussed on introducing extra relativistic species (`dark radiation'). We draw attention to another possibility: a new particle of mass less than 10 MeV that remains in thermal equilibrium with neutrinos until it becomes non-relativistic increases the neutrino temperature relative to the photons. We demonstrate that this leads to a value of Neff that is greater than three and that Neff at CMB formation is larger than at BBN. We investigate the constraints on such particles from the primordial abundance of helium and deuterium created during BBN and from the CMB power spectrum measured by ACT and SPT and find that they are presently relatively unconstrained. We forecast the sensitivity of the Planck satellite to this scenario: in addition to dramatically improving constraints on the particle mass, in some regions of parameter space it can discriminate between the new particle being a real or complex scalar.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures v2 matches version to appear in JCA

    Using screen video capture software to aide and inform cognitive interviewing

    Web-based surveys are a salient tool in the repertoire of social and behavioral scientists. The increase in web-based surveys is understandable considering the distinct advantages offered, including: (a) lower costs and reduced labor time, (b) ability to directly transfer data into statistical packages (reducing coding errors), (c) customization options enabling more attractive presentation, (d) ability to reduce respondent burden by embedding skip patterns, and (e) access to larger sample sizes in different geographic regions. It is important to note, however, that administering web-based surveys also introduces distinct sources of error (e.g., coverage, sampling and non-response). Regardless of format (e.g., paper-and-pencil or web-based), specific, prescribed steps must be followed when constructing an instrument in order to reduce survey error and lend credence to the data collected before subsequent analysis is performed. One of those crucial stages integral to the pretesting process is cognitive interviewing. Cognitive interviewing is a qualitative process, encompassing two main techniques: think aloud interviewing and verbal probing. Collectively, these two methods seek to (a) produce information on what the respondent is thinking while answering the questions, (b) the cognitive processes used to answer the questions, and (c) how the respondent answers the questions. The purpose of this article is to provide a practical guide outlining how Camtasia, a screen video capture software, can aide and inform the cognitive interview process

    The Mathematical Universe

    I explore physics implications of the External Reality Hypothesis (ERH) that there exists an external physical reality completely independent of us humans. I argue that with a sufficiently broad definition of mathematics, it implies the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH) that our physical world is an abstract mathematical structure. I discuss various implications of the ERH and MUH, ranging from standard physics topics like symmetries, irreducible representations, units, free parameters, randomness and initial conditions to broader issues like consciousness, parallel universes and Godel incompleteness. I hypothesize that only computable and decidable (in Godel's sense) structures exist, which alleviates the cosmological measure problem and help explain why our physical laws appear so simple. I also comment on the intimate relation between mathematical structures, computations, simulations and physical systems.Comment: Replaced to match accepted Found.
