Library of medium-resolution fiber optic echelle spectra of F, G, K, and M field dwarfs to giants stars

We present a library of Penn State Fiber Optic Echelle (FOE) observations of a sample of field stars with spectral types F to M and luminosity classes V to I. The spectral coverage is from 3800 AA to 10000 AA with nominal a resolving power 12000. These spectra include many of the spectral lines most widely used as optical and near-infrared indicators of chromospheric activity such as the Balmer lines (H_alpha, H_beta), Ca II H & K, Mg I b triplet, Na I D_{1} and D_{2}, He I D_{3}, and Ca II IRT lines. There are also a large number of photospheric lines, which can also be affected by chromospheric activity, and temperature sensitive photospheric features such as TiO bands. The spectra have been compiled with the goal of providing a set of standards observed at medium resolution. We have extensively used such data for the study of active chromosphere stars by applying a spectral subtraction technique. However, the data set presented here can also be utilized in a wide variety of ways ranging from radial velocity templates to study of variable stars and stellar population synthesis. This library can also be used for spectral classification purposes and determination of atmospheric parameters (T_eff, log{g}, [Fe/H]). A digital version of all the fully reduced spectra is available via ftp and the World Wide Web (WWW) in FITS format.Comment: Latex file with 17 pages, 4 figures. Investigations of Ra+^+ properties to test possibilities of new optical frequency standards

The present work tests the suitability of the narrow transitions $7s \ ^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{3/2}and and 7s ^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{5/2}inRa in Ra^+foropticalfrequencystandardstudies.Ourcalculationsofthelifetimesofthemetastable for optical frequency standard studies. Our calculations of the lifetimes of the metastable 6dstatesusingtherelativisticcoupledclustertheorysuggestthattheyaresufficientlylongforRa states using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory suggest that they are sufficiently long for Ra^+$ to be considered as a potential candidate for an atomic clock. This is further corroborated by our studies of the hyperfine interactions, dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities and quadrupole moments of the appropriate states of this system.Comment: Latex files, 5 pages, 1 figur

Algorithms and literate programs for weighted low-rank approximation with missing data

    No full text
Linear models identification from data with missing values is posed as a weighted low-rank approximation problem with weights related to the missing values equal to zero. Alternating projections and variable projections methods for solving the resulting problem are outlined and implemented in a literate programming style, using Matlab/Octave's scripting language. The methods are evaluated on synthetic data and real data from the MovieLens data sets

Imiquimod Does not Affect Shedding of Viable Chlamydiae in a Murine Model of Chlamydia trachomatis Genital Tract Infection

Objective: We postulated that either oral or vaginal administration of the immune response modifier imiquimod would decrease vaginal shedding of Chlamydia trachomatis, mouse pneumonitis strain (MoPn), in a murine model. Methods: Female BALB/c mice were infected intravaginally withC. trachomatis (MoPn) and were administered imiquimod either orally (30 mg/kg) or vaginally (10 μl of 5%imiquimod cream) prior to infection and every second day after infection for a total of four doses. The course of infection was monitored by collecting cervical–vaginal swabs and isolation in HeLa 229 cell culture. To determine whether the drug affected T helper type 1 or T helper type 2 immune response polarization, immunoglobulinG(IgG) subclass antibody responses were assessed at day 56 after infection. Results: There was no significant difference in the course of infection when imiquimod-treated mice were compared with sham-treated controls, regardless of whether the drug was administered orally or vaginally. IgG subclass antibody responses, and by extension, T helper type 1 to T helper type 2 immune response polarization, were also unaffected. Conclusions: Imiquimod has no efficacy in controllingC. trachomatis (MoPn) infection in the murine model

Constraints on T-Odd, P-Even Interactions from Electric Dipole Moments

We construct the relationship between nonrenormalizable, effective, time-reversal violating (TV) parity-conserving (PC) interactions of quarks and gauge bosons and various low-energy TVPC and TV parity-violating (PV) observables. Using effective field theory methods, we delineate the scenarious under which experimental limits on permanent electric dipole moments (EDM's) of the electron, neutron, and neutral atoms as well as limits on TVPC observables provide the most stringent bounds on new TVPC interactions. Under scenarios in which parity invariance is restored at short distances, the one-loop EDM of elementary fermions generate the most severe constraints. The limits derived from the atomic EDM of 199^{199}Hg are considerably weaker. When parity symmetry remains broken at short distances, direct TVPC search limits provide the least ambiguous bounds. The direct limits follow from TVPC interactions between two quarks.Comment: 43 pages, 9 figure

P and T Violation From Certain Dimension Eight Weinberg Operators

Dimension eight operators of the Weinberg type have been shown to give important contributions to CP violating phenomena, such as the electric dipole moment of the neutron. In this note we show how operators related to these (and expected to occur on equal footing) can give rise to time-reversal violating phenomena such as atomic electric dipole moments. We also estimate the induced parity violating phenomena such as small ``wrong'' parity admixtures in atomic states and find that they are negligible.
