    Microcontroller based Bidirectional Energy Metering for Domestic User

    The present energy scenario is greatly alarming the energy consumers to conserve as fossil fuels are going to deplete shortly. In this regard the renewable energy systems are really gaining momentum. Solar and wind roof top fittings are becoming popular choice for the domestic user based on their financial affordability. Solar panels generate energy to power a building’s electrical systems. In most cases, builders acknowledge that the solar panels installed on the roof will not always be sufficient for the building’s electrical needs, so the building is also connected to the main utility grid. However, sometimes during clear days the solar panels generate surplus power beyond the needs of the building. At these times, the surplus power is exported into the main utility grid. Most utility companies offer credits to buildings that export power in this manner. “Bi-directional Meter” means a consumer meter for measuring, indicating and recording quanta of electricity flowing in opposite directions (export to the licensee’s distribution system and import by the consumer from distribution system) in Kwh including any other quantity as per the requirement. Net metering / bidirectional metering record both import and export energy values giving prime focus on utilizing self produced electricity by renewable energy sources and excess or surplus to be  sold to utilities or grid. It results into reduction of electricity bills. Solar photovoltaic system is used significantly in net metering. The design of microcontroller based bidirectional energy meter is low cost, affordable to consumer for domestic application and efficient. The current work focusses on the development of one of the type of bidirectional metering which accounts the net usage, export and the monetory exchange. The intelligent controller makes use of the measuring setup and controls all the major activities of the proposed work

    Uptake and transport of novel amphiphilic polyelectrolyte-insulin nanocomplexes by caco-2 cells - towards oral insulin

Copyright SpringerPurpose: The influence of polymer architecture on cellular uptake and transport across Caco-2 cells of novel amphiphilic polyelectrolyte-insulin nanocomplexes was investigated. Method: Polyallylamine (PAA) (15 kDa) was grafted with palmitoyl chains (Pa) and subsequently modified with quaternary ammonium moieties (QPa). These two amphiphilic polyelectrolytes (APs) were tagged with rhodamine and their uptake by Caco-2 cells or their polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) with fluorescein isothiocyanate-insulin (FITC-insulin) uptake were investigated using fluorescence microscopy. The integrity of the monolayer was determined by measurement of transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). Insulin transport through Caco-2 monolayers was determined during TEER experiments. Result: Pa and insulin were co-localised in the cell membranes while QPa complexes were found within the cytoplasm. QPa complex uptake was not affected by calcium, cytochalasin D or nocodazole. Uptake was reduced by co-incubation with sodium azide, an active transport inhibitor. Both polymers opened tight junctions reversibly where the TEER values fell by up to 35 % within 30 minutes incubation with Caco-2 cells. Insulin transport through monolayers increased when QPa was used (0.27 ngmL-1 of insulin in basal compartment) compared to Pa (0.14 ngmL-1 of insulin in basal compartment) after 2 hours. Conclusion: These APs have been shown to be taken up by Caco-2 cells and reversibly open tight cell junctions. Further work is required to optimise these formulations with a view to maximising their potential to facilitate oral delivery of insulin.Peer reviewe

    Preparation of biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles for pharmaceutical applications using glass capillary microfluidics

    This paper was accepted for publication in the journal Chemical Engineering Science and the definitive published version is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2015.06.025The aim of this study was to develop a new microfluidic approach for the preparation of nanoparticles with tuneable sizes based on micromixing/direct nanoprecipitation in a coaxial assembly of tapered-end glass capillaries. The organic phase was 1 wt% poly(Δ-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(dl-lactic acid) (PLA) in tetrahydrofuran and the antisolvent was Milli-Q water. The size of nanoparticles was precisely controlled over a range of 190–650 nm by controlling phase flow rates, orifice size and flow configuration (two-phase co-flow or counter-current flow focusing). Smaller particles were produced in a flow focusing device, because the organic phase stream was significantly narrower than the orifice and remained narrow for a longer distance downstream of the orifice. The mean size of PCL particles produced in a flow focusing device with an orifice size of 200 ÎŒm, an organic phase flow rate of 1.7 mL h−1 and an aqueous-to-organic flow rate ratio of 10 was below 200 nm. The size of nanoparticles decreased with decreasing the orifice size and increasing the aqueous-to-organic phase flow rate ratio. Due to higher affinity for water and amorphous structure, PLA nanoparticles were smaller and exhibited a smoother surface and more rounded shape than PCL particles

    Edible bio-based nanostructures: delivery, absorption and potential toxicity

    The development of bio-based nanostructures as nanocarriers of bioactive compounds to specific body sites has been presented as a hot topic in food, pharmaceutical and nanotechnology fields. Food and pharmaceutical industries seek to explore the huge potential of these nanostructures, once they can be entirely composed of biocompatible and non-toxic materials. At the same time, they allow the incorporation of lipophilic and hydrophilic bioactive compounds protecting them against degradation, maintaining its active and functional performance. Nevertheless, the physicochemical properties of such structures (e.g., size and charge) could change significantly their behavior in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The main challenges in the development of these nanostructures are the proper characterization and understanding of the processes occurring at their surface, when in contact with living systems. This is crucial to understand their delivery and absorption behavior as well as to recognize potential toxicological effects. This review will provide an insight into the recent innovations and challenges in the field of delivery via GI tract using bio-based nanostructures. Also, an overview of the approaches followed to ensure an effective deliver (e.g., avoiding physiological barriers) and to enhance stability and absorptive intestinal uptake of bioactive compounds will be provided.     Design of bio-nanosystems for oral delivery of functional compounds

    Nanotechnology has been referred to as one of the most interesting topics in food technology due to the potentialities of its use by food industry. This calls for studying the behavior of nanosystems as carriers of biological and functional compounds aiming at their utilization for delivery, controlled release and protection of such compounds during food processing and oral ingestion. This review highlights the principles of design and production of bio-nanosystems for oral delivery and their behavior within the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract, while providing an insight into the application of reverse engineering approach to the design of those bio-nanosystems. Nanocapsules, nanohydrogels, lipid-based and multilayer nanosystems are discussed (in terms of their main ingredients, production techniques, predominant forces and properties) and some examples of possible food applications are given. Phenomena occurring in in vitro digestion models are presented, mainly using examples related to the utilization of lipid-based nanosystems and their physicochemical behavior throughout the GI tract. Furthermore, it is shown how a reverse engineering approach, through two main steps, can be used to design bio-nanosystems for food applications, and finally a last section is presented to discuss future trends and consumer perception on food nanotechnology.Miguel A.
