Growth of preferential attachment random graphs via continuous-time branching processes
A version of ``preferential attachment'' random graphs, corresponding to
linear ``weights'' with random ``edge additions,'' which generalizes some
previously considered models, is studied. This graph model is embedded in a
continuous-time branching scheme and, using the branching process apparatus,
several results on the graph model asymptotics are obtained, some extending
previous results, such as growth rates for a typical degree and the maximal
degree, behavior of the vertex where the maximal degree is attained, and a law
of large numbers for the empirical distribution of degrees which shows certain
``scale-free'' or ``power-law'' behaviors.Comment: 20 page
Superdiffusivity of Finite-Range Asymmetric Exclusion Processes on

Association of Kinesthetic and Read-Write Learner with Deep Approach Learning and Academic Achievement
Background: The main purpose of the present study was to further investigate study processes, learning styles, and academic achievement in medical students.Methods: A total of 214 (mean age 22.5 years) first and second year students - preclinical years - at the Asian Institute of Medical Science and Technology (AIMST) University School of Medicine, in Malaysia participated. There were 119 women (55.6%) and 95 men (44.4%). Biggs questionnaire for determining learning approaches and the VARK questionnaire for determining learning styles were used. These were compared to the student’s performance in the assessment examinations.Results: The major findings were 1) the majority of students prefer to study alone, 2) most students employ a superficial study approach, and 3) students with high kinesthetic and read-write scores performed better on examinations and approached the subject by deep approach method compared to students with low scores. Furthermore, there was a correlation between superficial approach scores and visual learner’s scores.Discussion: Read-write and kinesthetic learners who adopt a deep approach learning strategy perform better academically than do the auditory, visual learners that employ superficial study strategies. Perhaps visual and auditory learners can be encouraged to adopt kinesthetic and read-write styles to enhance their performance in the exams
Morphology Studies of Iron-Manganese Thin Films
Fe-based catalysts are known to be effective for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis from coal but are sensitive to sulfur poisoning. Addition of manganese to these catalysts has been proposed in an effort to combat this catalyst deactivation. To investigate the fundamental physical aspects of Mn incorporation into Fe, different compositions of model thin films of Fe-Mn, ranging from 100% Fe to 100% Mn were studied for the very first time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy. Our preliminary results indicate that the grain size of iron varied from 50 nm to 150 nm using the AFM image, in general agreement with others. Also the mixture with small amounts of manganese had large oxidic area. The surface was modified by the addition of manganese. The STM images of the samples showed similarities between pure iron and 75% Fe-25% Mn, while the 25% Fe-75% Mn looked very similar to 100% Mn. The mixture of 50% Fe-50% Mn seemed to contain two distinct surface features. This leads us to believe that STM and AFM can be useful tools to further investigate the model iron-manganese thin films and hence give insight into the unknown atomic scale interactions and also to study the catalytic properties better

Boundary driven zero-range processes in random media
The stationary states of boundary driven zero-range processes in random media
with quenched disorder are examined, and the motion of a tagged particle is
analyzed. For symmetric transition rates, also known as the random barrier
model, the stationary state is found to be trivial in absence of boundary
drive. Out of equilibrium, two further cases are distinguished according to the
tail of the disorder distribution. For strong disorder, the fugacity profiles
are found to be governed by the paths of normalized -stable
subordinators. The expectations of integrated functions of the tagged particle
