New technique to measure the cavity defects of Fabry-Perot interferometers

We define and test a new technique to accurately measure the cavity defects
of air-spaced FPIs, including distortions due to the spectral tuning process
typical of astronomical observations. We further develop a correction technique
to maintain the shape of the cavity as constant as possible during the spectral
scan. These are necessary steps to optimize the spectral transmission profile
of a two-dimensional spectrograph using one or more FPIs.
We devise a generalization of the techniques developed for the so-called
phase-shifting interferometry to the case of FPIs. The technique is applicable
to any FPI that can be tuned via changing the cavity spacing (-axis), and
can be used for any etalon regardless of the coating' reflectivity. The major
strength of our method is the ability to fully characterize the cavity during a
spectral scan, allowing for the determination of scan-dependent modifications
of the plates. As a test, we have applied this technique to three 50 mm
diameter interferometers, with cavity gaps ranging between 600 micron and 3 mm,
coated for use in the visible range.
We obtain accurate and reliable measures of the cavity defects of air-spaced
FPIs, and of their evolution during the entire spectral scan. Our main, and
unexpected, result is that the relative tilt between the two FPI plates varies
significantly during the spectral scan, and can dominate the cavity defects; in
particular, we observe that the tilt component at the extremes of the scan is
sensibly larger than at the center of the scan. Exploiting the capability of
the electronic controllers to set the reference plane at any given spectral
step, we develop a correction technique that allows the minimization of the
tilt during a complete spectral scan. The correction remains highly stable over

The Effects of Degree of Sexual Homogeneity in Groups of Preschool Children on Task Performance
The effects of degree of sexual homogeneity, in groups of preschool children, on performance of a task were studied. Twenty four-year-old male children from the Utah State Child Development Laboratories served as subjects. Each subject performed the task of placing pegs in a pegboard during a sixty-second time interval; once in a group of opposite-sex peers; once in a group of same-sex peers; and once on a one-to-one basis with the author.
The findings seemed to indicate that preschool children\u27s rate of task performance is not influenced by the presence or absence of peers of the same-and opposite - sex. Differences between scores of subjects under each experimental condition were not significant
A rural agricultural-sustainable energy community model and its application to Felton Valley, Australia
Energy and food security require a delicate balance which should not threaten or undermine community prosperity. Where it is proposed to derive energy from conventional fossil fuel resources (such as coal, shale oil, natural gas, coal seam gas) located in established rural areas, and particularly where these areas are used for productive agricultural purposes, there are often both intense community concern as well as broader questions regarding the relative social, economic and environmental costs and benefits of different land uses and, increasingly, different energy sources. The advent of mainstream renewable energy technologies means that alternative energy options may provide a viable alternative, allowing energy demand to be met without compromising existing land uses. We demonstrate how such a Sustainable Energy Rural Model can be designed to achieve a balance between the competing social goals of energy supply, agricultural production, environmental integrity and social well-being, and apply it to the Felton Valley, a highly productive and resilient farming community in eastern Australia.
Research into available wind and solar resources found that Felton Valley has a number of attributes that indicate its suitability for the development of an integrated renewable energy precinct which would complement, rather than displace, existing agricultural enterprises. Modelling results suggest a potential combined annual renewable energy output from integrated wind and solar resources of 1,287 GWh/yr from peak installed capacity of 713 MW, sufficient to supply the electrical energy needs of about 160,000 homes, in combination with total biomass food production of 31,000 tonnes per annum or 146 GWh/yr of human food energy. The portfolio of renewable energy options will not only provide energy source diversity but also ensures long-term food security and regional stability.
The Felton Valley model provides an example of community-led energy transformation and has potential as a pilot project for the development of smart distributed grids that would negate the need for further expansion of coal mining and coal fired power stations

Influence of Plant Severing on Movement of Ostrinia nubilalis Larvae in Zea mays Hybrid Seed Production Fields
Genetically engineered corn hybrids that contain a cry gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) are gaining popularity for controlling the corn pest Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Continuous use of Bt corn, however, could select for O. nubilalis that are resistant to this corn. Monitoring for insect resistance is important, because it could help maintain the Bt technology. A possible monitoring method is to collect larval insects in commercial drying bins after harvest from Bt seed production fields. A drawback to this method is that these collections may be contaminated by insects that moved as later instars from severed non-Bt male rows into the adjacent Bt female rows. These larvae have little to no exposure to Bt toxin, resulting in possible “false positives.” The objectives of this study were to first find which combination of planting and severing dates produces the least number of larvae that move from non-Bt male plants to Bt female plants and to assess O. nubilalislarval movement from severed non-Bt male rows to Bt female rows. Field studies in 2002 and 2003 were designed to simulate a hybrid seed production field. Results suggest that movement of O. nubilalis larvae from male corn is minimized when corn is planted early and male plants are severed by 2 wk post-anthesis. This reduces the likelihood of false positives by reducing the number of susceptible larvae moving between Bt and non-Bt plants. Also, larvae moved to all four female rows that were adjacent to the severed rows, but there were significantly more larvae found in the closest row compared with the other three. These results could be used to develop a monitoring program to find O. nubilalis larvae with resistance to Bt corn in field populations of O. nubilalis
Statistical Analysis of Small Ellerman Bomb Events
The properties of Ellerman bombs (EBs), small-scale brightenings in the
H-alpha line wings, have proved difficult to establish due to their size being
close to the spatial resolution of even the most advanced telescopes. Here, we
aim to infer the size and lifetime of EBs using high-resolution data of an
emerging active region collected using the Interferometric BIdimensional
Spectrometer (IBIS) and Rapid Oscillations of the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA)
instruments as well as the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the
Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We develop an algorithm to track EBs through
their evolution, finding that EBs can often be much smaller (around 0.3") and
shorter lived (less than 1 minute) than previous estimates. A correlation
between G-band magnetic bright points and EBs is also found. Combining SDO/HMI
and G-band data gives a good proxy of the polarity for the vertical magnetic
field. It is found that EBs often occur both over regions of opposite polarity
flux and strong unipolar fields, possibly hinting at magnetic reconnection as a
driver of these events.The energetics of EB events is found to follow a

Optimal Pacing for Running 400 m and 800 m Track Races
Physicists seeking to understand complex biological systems often find it
rewarding to create simple "toy models" that reproduce system behavior. Here a
toy model is used to understand a puzzling phenomenon from the sport of track
and field. Races are almost always won, and records set, in 400 m and 800 m
running events by people who run the first half of the race faster than the
second half, which is not true of shorter races, nor of longer. There is
general agreement that performance in the 400 m and 800 m is limited somehow by
the amount of anaerobic metabolism that can be tolerated in the working muscles
in the legs. A toy model of anaerobic metabolism is presented, from which an
optimal pacing strategy is analytically calculated via the Euler-Lagrange
equation. This optimal strategy is then modified to account for the fact that
the runner starts the race from rest; this modification is shown to result in
the best possible outcome by use of an elementary variational technique that
supplements what is found in undergraduate textbooks. The toy model reproduces
the pacing strategies of elite 400 m and 800 m runners better than existing
models do. The toy model also gives some insight into training strategies that
