The Discovery of an X-ray/UV Stellar Flare from the Late-K/Early-M Dwarf LMC 335
We report the discovery of an X-ray/UV stellar flare from the source LMC 335,
captured by XMM-Newton in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The flare
event was recorded continuously in X-ray for its first 10 hours from the
precursor to the late decay phases. The observed fluxes increased by more than
two orders of magnitude at its peak in X-ray and at least one in the UV as
compared to quiescence. The peak 0.1-7.0 keV X-ray flux is derived from the
two-temperature APEC model to be ~(8.4 +/- 0.6) x 10^-12 erg cm-2 s-1.
Combining astrometric information from multiple X-ray observations in the
quiescent and flare states, we identify the NIR counterpart of LMC 335 as the
2MASS source J05414534-6921512. The NIR color relations and spectroscopic
parallax characterize the source as a Galactic K7-M4 dwarf at a foreground
distance of (100 - 264) pc, implying a total energy output of the entire event
of ~(0.4 - 2.9) x 10^35 erg. This report comprises detailed analyses of this
late-K / early-M dwarf flare event that has the longest time coverage yet
reported in the literature. The flare decay can be modeled with two exponential
components with timescales of ~28 min and ~4 hours, with a single component
decay firmly ruled out. The X-ray spectra during flare can be described by two
components, a dominant high temperature component of ~40-60MK and a low
temperature component of ~10MK, with a flare loop length of about 1.1-1.3

Chairside testing for cariogenic bacteria: current concepts and clinical strategies
Modern approaches to dental caries such as STEM (System for Total Environmental Management) are based on a whole-of-patient and whole-of-biofilm approach to the disease. There are now multiple lines of evidence which indicate that dental caries is a multi-pathogen disease and that mutans streptococci may participate but are not critically essential for disease to occur. A number of new strategies for controlling caries risk are currently being explored, based on the modern biofilm concept. Clinical diagnostic kits examine plaque or saliva for features of the biofilm which are surrogates (markers) of the disease process can be useful in clinical patient management since these can be undertaken at chairside
Discrimination between two mechanisms of surface-scattering in a single-mode waveguide
Transport properties of a single-mode waveguide with rough boundary are
studied by discrimination between two mechanisms of surface scattering, the
amplitude and square-gradient ones. Although these mechanisms are generically
mixed, we show that for some profiles they can separately operate within
non-overlapping intervals of wave numbers of scattering waves. This effect may
be important in realistic situations due to inevitable long-range correlations

A study of primary dental enamel from preterm and full-term children using light and scanning electron microscopy
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the enamel thickness of the maxillary primary incisors of preterm children with very low birth weight (< 1,500 g) compared to full-term children with normal birth weight. Methods: A total of 90 exfoliated maxillary primary central incisors were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three serial buccolingual ground sections of each tooth were examined under light microscopy, and maximum dimensions of the prenatally and postnatally formed enamel were measured. Results: The enamel of preterm teeth was approximately 20% thinner than that for fullterm teeth. Most of the reduction was observed in the prenatally formed enamel. This was 5 to 13 times thinner than that for full-term children (P < .001). The catch-up thickness of postnatally formed enamel did not compensate fully for the decrease in prenatal enamel (P < .001). Although none of the teeth used in this study had enamel defects visible to the naked eye, 52% of preterm teeth showed enamel hypoplasia under SEM, compared with only 16% found on full-term teeth (P < .001). These defects were present as pits or irregular, shallow areas of missing enamel. Conclusions: Preterm primary dental enamel is abnormal in surface quality, and is significantly thinner compared to full-term enamel. The thinner enamel is due mainly to reduced prenatal growth and results in smaller dimensions of the primary dentition
All-optical high speed NOR gate based on two photon absorption in silicon wire waveguides
We demonstrate for the first time an all-optical logic NOR gate in submicron size silicon wire waveguides. High speed operation at equivalent 80Gbps data rate was achieved using pump induced non-degenerate two-photon absorption inside the waveguides. The device requires low pulse energy (few pJ) for logic gate operation. (C) 2005 Optical Society of America
Nowcasting directional change in high frequency FX markets
Directional change (DC) is an alternative to time series in recording transactions: it only records the transactions at which price changes to the opposite direction of the current trend by a threshold specified by the observer. DC can only be confirmed in hindsight: one does not know that direction has changed until it is confirmed by a later transaction. The transaction in which the price confirms a DC is called a DC confirmation point. DC nowcasting is an attempt to recognize DC before the DC confirmation point. Accurate DC nowcasting will benefit trading. In this paper, we propose a method for DC nowcasting. This method is entirely data driven: it is based on the historical distribution of DC-related indicators. Empirical results suggest that DC nowcasting is possible, even under a naïve rule. This opens the door to a promising research direction on an important topic
