Heisenberg equation for a nonrelativistic particle on a hypersurface: from the centripetal force to a curvature induced force
In classical mechanics, a nonrelativistic particle constrained on an
curved hypersurface embedded in flat space experiences the centripetal
force only. In quantum mechanics, the situation is totally different for the
presence of the geometric potential. We demonstrate that the motion of the
quantum particle is "driven" by not only the the centripetal force, but also a
curvature induced force proportional to the Laplacian of the mean curvature,
which is fundamental in the interface physics, causing curvature driven
interface evolution.Comment: 4 page
The centripetal force law and the equation of motion for a particle on a curved hypersurface
It is pointed out that the current form of extrinsic equation of motion for a
particle constrained to remain on a hypersurface is in fact a half-finished
version for it is established without regard to the fact that the particle can
never depart from the geodesics on the surface. Once the fact be taken into
consideration, the equation takes that same form as that for centripetal force
law, provided that the symbols are re-interpreted so that the law is applicable
for higher dimensions. The controversial issue of constructing operator forms
of these equations is addressed, and our studies show the quantization of
constrained system based on the extrinsic equation of motion is favorable.Comment: 5 pages, major revisio
Stochastic Optimization for Network-Constrained Power System Scheduling Problem
The stochastic nature of demand and wind generation has a considerable effect on solving the scheduling problem of a modern power system. Network constraints such as power flow equations and transmission capacities also need to be considered for a comprehensive approach to model renewable energy integration and analyze generation system flexibility. Firstly, this paper accounts for the stochastic inputs in such a way that the uncertainties are modeled as normally distributed forecast errors. The forecast errors are then superimposed on the outputs of load and wind forecasting tools. Secondly, it efficiently models the network constraints and tests an iterative algorithm and a piecewise linear approximation for representing transmission losses in mixed integer linear programming (MILP). It also integrates load shedding according to priority factors set by the system operator. Moreover, the different interactions among stochastic programming, network constraints, and prioritized load shedding are thoroughly investigated in the paper. The stochastic model is tested on a power system adopted from Jeju Island, South Korea. Results demonstrate the impact of wind speed variability and network constraints on the flexibility of the generation system. Further analysis shows the effect of loss modeling approaches on total cost, accuracy, computational time, and memory requirement
The Bulk RS KK-gluon at the LHC
We study the possibility of discovering and measuring the properties of the
lightest Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon in a Randall-Sundrum scenario
where the Standard Model matter and gauge fields propagate in the bulk. The
KK-gluon decays primarily into top quarks. We discuss how to use the final states to discover and probe the properties of the KK-gluon.
Identification of highly energetic tops is crucial for this analysis. We show
that conventional identification methods relying on well separated decay
products will not work for heavy resonances but suggest alternative methods for
top identification for energetic tops. We find, conservatively, that resonances
with masses less than 5 TeV can be discovered if the algorithm to identify high
tops can reject the QCD background by a factor of 10. We also find that
for similar or lighter masses the spin can be determined and for lighter masses
the chirality of the coupling to can be measured. Since the energetic
top pair final state is a generic signature for a large class of new physics as
the top quark presumably couples most strongly to the electroweak symmetry
breaking sector, the methods we have outlined to study the properties of the
KK-gluon should also be important in other scenarios.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
Quantum Group as Semi-infinite Cohomology
We obtain the quantum group as semi-infinite cohomology of the
Virasoro algebra with values in a tensor product of two braided vertex operator
algebras with complementary central charges . Each braided VOA is
constructed from the free Fock space realization of the Virasoro algebra with
an additional q-deformed harmonic oscillator degree of freedom. The braided VOA
structure arises from the theory of local systems over configuration spaces and
it yields an associative algebra structure on the cohomology. We explicitly
provide the four cohomology classes that serve as the generators of
and verify their relations. We also discuss the possible extensions of our
construction and its connection to the Liouville model and minimal string
theory.Comment: 50 pages, 7 figures, minor revisions, typos corrected, Communications

A qualitative study on personal hygiene knowledge and practices among food handlers at selected primary schools in Klang Valley area, Selangor, Malaysia
A study was conducted to determine personal hygiene knowledge among 25 food handlers at
12 selected primary schools in Klang Valley area, Selangor, Malaysia. A qualitative approach
using in-depth interviews was employed and respondents were selected by a convenience
sampling. The results showed that the respondents had basic knowledge on personal hygiene
practices, mainly on hand washing (30.7%) and glove use (18.7%). The food handlers (<11%)
also demonstrated their knowledge on other good personal hygiene practices that were related
to the use of hair restrain/cap/apron, keeping tidy hair/ clean nails/ clean hand, no bare hand
contact with food, not wearing ring/jewelry, no smoking, tidy/clean attire and typhoid injection.
Further assessment demonstrated that only 12% respondents were able to describe a reasonable
procedure for hand washing and the steps that were missed most were the failure to specify
the need to rinse and dry hands after washing. The respondents knew that the use of glove was
to prevent bare hand contact (80%) and can reduce risk of food contamination (88%). All the
respondents agreed that food handlers with abrasion or cuts on their fingers or hands should
not touch unwrapped foods. A high percentage respondents (>90%) practiced various good
hand washing practices, with only 36% did not practice washing hands after eating or drinking.
Most respondents (>70%) practiced glove use, however more than 50% did not wash hands
with every glove change, change gloves when change type of products and after preparing raw
material. The study showed that the food handlers have basic knowledge one good personal
hygiene practices. However, some discrepancies were revealed in the proper hand washing
procedure. This study recommended good hand washing procedure to be reiterated among the
food handlers. There is also an immediate need for continuous training among food handlers
regarding good personal hygiene practices
Searching for the Kaluza-Klein Graviton in Bulk RS Models
The best-studied version of the RS1 model has all the Standard Model
particles confined to the TeV brane. However, recent variants have the Standard
Model fermions and gauge bosons located in the bulk five-dimensional spacetime.
We study the potential reach of the LHC in searching for the lightest KK
partner of the graviton in the most promising such models in which the
right-handed top is localized very near the TeV brane and the light fermions
are localized near the Planck brane. We consider both detection and the
establishment of the spin-2 nature of the resonance should it be found.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures - JHEP published version, figures added,

Non-linear Structures in Non-critical NSR String
We investigate the Ward identities of the \W_{\infty} symmetry in the
super-Liouville theory coupled to the super-conformal matter of central charge
. The theory is classified into two chiralities.
For the positive chirality, all gravitationally dressed scaling operators are
generated from the gravitational primaries by acting one of the ring
generators in the R-sector on them repeatedly. After fixing the normalizations
of the dressed scaling operators, we find that the Ward identities are
expressed in the form of the {\it usual} \W_q algebra constraints as in the
bosonic case: \W^{(k+1)}_n \tau =0, , where the equations for even and odd come from the currents in the
NS- and the R-sector respectively. The non-linear terms come from the anomalous
contributions at the boundaries of moduli space. The negative chirality is
defined by interchanging the roles of and . Then we get the \W_p
algebra constraints.Comment: 22 pages, Latex file, YITP/U-94-16, UT-Komaba/94-1
Possible Evidence For Axino Dark Matter In The Galactic Bulge
Recently, the SPI spectrometer on the INTEGRAL satellite observed strong 511
keV line emission from the galactic bulge. Although the angular distribution
(spherically symmetric with width of \sim 9 degree) of this emission is
difficult to account for with traditional astrophysical scenarios, light dark
matter particles could account for the observation. In this letter, we consider
the possibility that decaying axinos in an R-parity violating model of
supersymmetry may be the source of this emission. We find that \sim 1-300 MeV
axinos with R-parity violating couplings can naturally produce the observed
emission.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Version accepted by Physical Review
