Using indirect methods to understand the impact of forced migration on long-term under-five mortality.
Despite the large numbers of displaced persons and the often-lengthy periods of displacement, little is known about the impact of forced migration on long-term under-five mortality. This paper looks at the Brass Method (and adaptations of this method) and the Preceding Birth Technique in combination with a classification of women by their migration and reproductive histories, in order to study the impact of forced migration on under-five mortality. Data came from the Demography of Forced Migration Project, a study on mortality, fertility and violence in the refugee and host populations of Arua District, Uganda and Yei River District, Sudan. Results indicate that women who did not migrate in a situation of conflict and women who repatriated before the age of 15, had children with the highest under-five mortality rates compared with women who were currently refugees and women who repatriated after the age of 15
The optical counterpart of SAX J1808.4-3658, the transient bursting millisecond X-ray pulsar
A set of CCD images have been obtained during the decline of the X-ray
transient SAX J1808.4-3658 during April-June 1998. The optical counterpart has
been confirmed by several pieces of evidence. The optical flux shows a
modulation on several nights which is consistent with the established X-ray
binary orbit period of 2 hours. This optical variability is roughly in
antiphase with the weak X-ray modulation. The source mean magnitude of V=16.7
on April 18 declined rapidly after April 22. From May 2 onwards the magnitude
was more constant at around V=18.45 but by June 27 was below our sensitivity
limit. The optical decline precedes the rapid second phase of the X-ray
decrease by 3 +/- 1 days. The source has been identified on a 1974 UK Schmidt
plate at an estimated magnitude of ~20. The nature of the optical companion is

Atmospheric environment for Space Shuttle (STS-41D) launch
Selected atmospheric conditions observed near Space Shuttle STS-41D launch time on August 30, 1984, at Kennedy Space Center, Florida are summarized. Values of ambient pressure, temperature, moisture, ground winds, visual observations (cloud), and winds aloft are included. The sequence of prelaunch Jimsphere measured vertical wind profiles is given as well as wind and thermodynamic parameters representative of surface and aloft conditions in the SRB descent/impact ocean area. Final atmospheric tapes, which consist of wind and thermodynamic parameters versus altitude, for STS-41D vehicle ascent and SRB descent/impact were constructed. The STS-41D ascent meteorological data tape was constructed by Marshall Space Flight Center's Atmospheric Science Division to provide an internally consistent data set for use in post flight performance assessments
Adaptive control of CO bending vibration: deciphering field-system dynamics
We combined adaptive closed-loop optimization, phase-shaping with a
restricted search space and imaging to control dynamics and decipher the
optimal pulse. The approach was applied to controlling the amplitude of CO
bending vibration during strong-field Coulomb explosion. The search space was
constrained by expressing the spectral phase as a Taylor series, which
generated pulses with characteristics commensurate with the natural physical
features of this problem. Optimal pulses were obtained that enhanced bending by
up to 56% relative to what is observed with comparably intense, transform
limited pulses. We show that (1) this judicious choice of a reduced parameter
set made unwrapping the dynamics more transparent and (2) the enhancement is
consistent with field-induced structural changes to a bent excited state of
CO, which theoretical simulations have identified as the state from

Dielectric function and plasmons in graphene
The electromagnetic response of graphene, expressed by the dielectric
function, and the spectrum of collective excitations are studied as a function
of wave vector and frequency. Our calculation is based on the full band
structure, calculated within the tight-binding approximation. As a result, we
find plasmons whose dispersion is similar to that obtained in the single-valley
approximation by Dirac fermions. In contrast to the latter, however, we find a
stronger damping of the plasmon modes due to inter-band absorption. Our
calculation also reveals effects due to deviations from the linear Dirac
spectrum as we increase the Fermi energy, indicating an anisotropic behavior
with respect to the wave vector of the external electromagnetic field
