    CP Violation in a Multi-Higgs Doublet Model

    We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a S3×Z3S_3 \times Z_3 horizontal symmetry. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this model: a) CP violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due to scalar-pseudoscalar mixings. We find that the predictions for ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon, CP violation in B decays and the electric dipole moments of neutron and electron are different between these two mechanisms. These predictions are also dramatically different from the minimal Standard Model predictions.Comment: 17 pages + one figure, Revtex.     Study of the pattern of adverse events following immunization of children in a tertiary care hospital

    Background: Success of an immunization programme depends upon awareness regarding usefulness and safety of vaccines. Widespread information on vaccine safety is very essential. Objective of study was to analyze pattern of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) in children.Methods: Prospective, observational study was carried out at immunization OPD of B. J. Government Medical College and Sassoon General hospital, Pune, where children receiving routine immunization were analyzed & followed up through telephonic survey of parents. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) form was used to record AEFI.Results: Total 1206 children, aged 0-6 years, received total of 3179 vaccine doses. 22.71% AEFI were reported. Most common AEFI per 1000 doses of all vaccinations was Fever, seen in less than 9 months of age group (84.67%). DPT vaccine was most common vaccine associated with AEFI and maximum (37.8%) adverse events were seen with 1st dose of DPT.Conclusions: Reporting of AEFI with regular analysis and feedback should be an integral part of immunization programs

    The diagnosis of leukemia involves the detection of the abnormal characteristics of blood cells by a trained pathologist. Currently, this is done manually by observing the morphological characteristics of white blood cells in the microscopic images. Though there are some equipment- based and chemical-based tests available, the use and adaptation of the automated computer vision-based system is still an issue. There are certain software frameworks available in the literature; however, they are still not being adopted commercially. So there is a need for an automated and software- based framework for the detection of leukemia. In software-based detection, segmentation is the first critical stage that outputs the region of interest for further accurate diagnosis. Therefore, this paper explores an efficient and hybrid segmentation that proposes a more efficient and effective system for leukemia diagnosis. A very popular publicly available database, the acute lymphoblastic leukemia image database (ALL-IDB), is used in this research. First, the images are pre-processed and segmentation is done using Multilevel thresholding with Otsu and Kapur methods. To further optimize the segmentation performance, the Learning enthusiasm-based teaching-learning-based optimization (LebTLBO) algorithm is employed. Different metrics are used for measuring the system performance. A comparative analysis of the proposed methodology is done with existing benchmarks methods. The proposed approach has proven to be better than earlier techniques with measuring parameters of PSNR and Similarity index. The result shows a significant improvement in the performance measures with optimizing threshold algorithms and the LebTLBO technique

    Brodie’s abscess of proximal shaft radius in 17-year-old male: a case report

    Brodies abscess is an uncommon form of osteomyelitis. It is typically found in metaphyseal region of long bones particularly of lower limb. We herein report rare case of Brodies abscess of proximal shaft radius in 17-year-old male presented with pain over proximal aspect of left forearm for 2 months. A plain radiograph showed a translucent lesion of approximately 1.9×1.1 cm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed Penumbra sign on T1 and T2 weighted images. Laboratory results showed no inflammatory response. Treatment was done by curettage. Culture report showed Staphylococcus aureus growth. Postoperatively administration of antibiotics was done. Follow up was uneventful. We diagnosed and surgically treated a rare case of Brodies abscess of proximal shaft radius in 17-year-old male. As the upper extremities are areas of unloaded bone, we successfully treated this patient by curettage and antibiotics without bone grafting.

    Deep penetration of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene composites by a sharp-tipped punch

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.The penetration of unidirectional (UD) and [0o/90o] cross-ply ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibre composites by sharp-tipped cylindrical punches has been investigated. While the measured penetration pressure for both composite types increased with decreasing punch diameter, the pressure was significantly higher for the cross-ply composites and increased with decreasing ply thickness. A combination of optical microscopy and X-ray tomography revealed that in both composites, the sharp-tipped punch penetrated without fibre fracture by the formation of mode-I cracks along the fibre directions, followed by the wedging open of the crack by the advancing punch. In the cross-ply composites, delamination between adjacent 0o and 90o plies also occurred to accommodate the incompatible deformation between plies containing orthogonal mode-I cracks. Micromechanical models for the steady-state penetration pressure were developed for both composites. To account for material anisotropy as well as the large shear strains and fibre rotations, the deformation of the composites was modelled via a pressure-dependent crystal plasticity framework. Intra and inter-ply fracture were accounted for via mode-I and delamination toughnesses respectively. These models account for the competition between deformation and fracture of the plies and accurately predict the measured steady-state penetration pressures over the wide range of punch diameters and ply thicknesses investigated here. Design maps for the penetration resistance of cross-ply composites were constructed using these models and subsequently used to infer composite designs that maximise the penetration resistance for a user prescribed value of fibre strength
