New Record of \u3ci\u3eBrachycercus Maculatus\u3c/i\u3e Berner (Ephemeroptera: Caenidae) From New York and a Key to Larvae of Northeastern Species

    Get PDF
Brachycercus maculatus, a member of a rare group of mayflies, is now recorded for the first time from New York State in the upper Hudson River. An illustrated key to the Brachycercus larvae of northeastern North America is provided to spur further study of the genus in the region

A SiGe HEMT Mixer IC with Low Conversion Loss

    Get PDF
The authors present the first SiGe HEMT mixer integrated circuit. The active mixer stage, operating up to 10GHz RF, has been designed and realized using a 0.1µ µµ µm gate length transistor technology. The design is based on a new large-signal simulation model developed for the SiGe HEMT. Good agreement between simulation and measurement is reached. The mixer exhibits 4.0dB and 4.7dB conversion loss when down-converting 3.0GHz and 6.0GHz signals, respectively, to an intermediate frequency of 500MHz using high-side injection of 5dBm local oscillator power. Conversion loss is less than 8dB for RF frequencies up to 10GHz with a mixer linearity of –8.8dBm input related 1dB compression point

Alpha Clustering and the stellar nucleosynthesis of carbon

The astrophysical S--factor and reaction rates for the triple--alpha process are calculated in the direct--capture model. It is shown that the stellar carbon production is extremely sensitive to small variations in the N--N interaction.Comment: 2 pages LaTe

Hot Tips Turned Flops: Liability for Unsuitable Investment Advice - An Integrated Approach

    Get PDF
This paper develops a new analytical framework for assessing losses from unsuitable investment advice, integrating both legal and economic aspects. First, a core of legal concepts for assessing losses is identified that is common to most jurisdictions. These include negligence in advice, causation as examined by the but-for-test, and the loss caused by the unsuitable advice. Building upon these legal concepts, five economic tests are developed for analyzing the causal chain from improper advice to financial loss. If the tests show that the advice was unsuitable, the investor did not know about it, the investment violated his risk patterns, and the assets most likely chosen with suitable advice would have performed better, an economic proof for establishing liability is provided, thus supporting legal assessments of losses. Several new analytical tools are suggested to substantiate the analysis. As a major conclusion, it is shown that proving liability for unsuitable investment advice gets more difficult, the more financially sophisticated an investor is

Startup of the High-Intensity Ultracold Neutron Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute

Ultracold neutrons (UCN) can be stored in suitable bottles and observed for several hundreds of seconds. Therefore UCN can be used to study in detail the fundamental properties of the neutron. A new user facility providing ultracold neutrons for fundamental physics research has been constructed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, the PSI UCN source. Assembly of the facility finished in December 2010 with the first production of ultracold neutrons. Operation approval was received in June 2011. We give an overview of the source and the status at startup.Comment: Proceedings of the International Conference on Exotic Atoms and Related Topics - EXA2011 September 5-9, 2011 Austrian Academy of Sciences, Theatersaal, Sonnenfelsgasse 19, 1010 Wien, Austria 6 pages, 3 figure

Effects of Experience and Advice on Process and Performance in Negotiations

This experiment (N = 68 dyads) tested the influence of experience and advice on behavior and joint outcomes in integrative two-party negotiations. Dyads in an advice condition received short tactical advice to question fixed-pie assumptions and to exchange information. Afterward, they negotiated once. Dyads in an experience condition negotiated twice in successive rounds. Finally, dyads in an experience-and-advice condition negotiated twice and received advice prior to the second negotiation. Dependent measures were negotiation behavior, negotiation duration, joint outcome, and judgmental accuracy. Results showed that the combination of advice and experience led dyads to apply more problem solving and fewer contentious strategies, which mediated the higher joint outcomes that these dyads reached in shorter times. Experience or advice alone was not sufficient to make negotiators use different strategies or to exploit the integrative potential of the negotiations better than they did before they received advice and/or gained experience

Properties of 8^{8}Be and 12^{12}C deduced from the folding--potential model

The α\alpha--α\alpha differential cross sections are analyzed in the optical model using a double--folded potential. With the knowledge of this potential bound and resonance--state properties of α\alpha--cluster states in 8^{8}Be and 12^{12}C as well as astrophysical S--factors of 4^{4}He(α\alpha,γ\gamma)8^{8}Be and 8^{8}Be(α\alpha,γ\gamma)12^{12}C are calculated. Γγ\Gamma_{\gamma}--widths and B(E2)--values are deduced.Comment: 2 pages LaTeX, 2 figures can be obtained from the author

Quantum motion of a neutron in a wave-guide in the gravitational field

We study theoretically the quantum motion of a neutron in a horizontal wave-guide in the gravitational field of the Earth. The wave-guide in question is equipped with a mirror below and a rough absorber above. We show that such a system acts as a quantum filter, i.e. it effectively absorbs quantum states with sufficiently high transversal energy but transmits low-energy states. The states transmitted are mainly determined by the potential well formed by the gravitational field of the Earth and the mirror. The formalism developed for quantum motion in an absorbing wave-guide is applied to the description of the recent experiment on the observation of the quantum states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field
