Point vortices and classical orthogonal polynomials
Stationary equilibria of point vortices with arbitrary choice of circulations
in a background flow are studied. Differential equations satisfied by
generating polynomials of vortex configurations are derived. It is shown that
these equations can be reduced to a single one. It is found that polynomials
that are Wronskians of classical orthogonal polynomials solve the latter
equation. As a consequence vortex equilibria at a certain choice of background
flows can be described with the help of Wronskians of classical orthogonal

Star Formation and Tidal Encounters with the Low Surface Brightness Galaxy UGC 12695 and Companions
We present VLA H I observations of the low surface brightness galaxy UGC
12695 and its two companions, UGC 12687 and a newly discovered dwarf galaxy
2333+1234. UGC 12695 shows solid body rotation but has a very lopsided
morphology of the H I disk, with the majority of the H I lying in the southern
arm of the galaxy. The H I column density distribution of this very blue, LSB
galaxy coincides in detail with its light distribution. Comparing the H I
column density of UGC 12695 with the empirical (but not well understood) value
of Sigma_c = 10E21 atoms/cm^2 found in, i.e., Skillman's 1986 paper shows the
star formation to be a local affair, occurring only in those regions where the
column density is above this star formation threshold. The low surface
brightness nature of this galaxy could thus be attributed to an insufficient
gas surface density, inhibiting star formation on a more global scale.
Significantly, though, the Toomre criterion places a much lower critical
density on the galaxy (+/-10E20 atoms/cm^2), which is shown by the galaxy's low
SFR to not be applicable.
Within a projected distance of 300kpc/30kms of UGC 12695 lie two companion
galaxies - UGC 12687, a high surface brightness barred spiral galaxy, and
2333+1234, a dwarf galaxy discovered during this investigation. The close
proximity of the three galaxies, combined with UGC 12695's extremely blue color
and regions of localized starburst and UGC 12687's UV excess bring to mind

XWeB: the XML Warehouse Benchmark
With the emergence of XML as a standard for representing business data, new
decision support applications are being developed. These XML data warehouses
aim at supporting On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) operations that
manipulate irregular XML data. To ensure feasibility of these new tools,
important performance issues must be addressed. Performance is customarily
assessed with the help of benchmarks. However, decision support benchmarks do
not currently support XML features. In this paper, we introduce the XML
Warehouse Benchmark (XWeB), which aims at filling this gap. XWeB derives from
the relational decision support benchmark TPC-H. It is mainly composed of a
test data warehouse that is based on a unified reference model for XML
warehouses and that features XML-specific structures, and its associate XQuery
decision support workload. XWeB's usage is illustrated by experiments on
several XML database management systems
Spitzer Observations of Low Luminosity Isolated and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
We examine the infrared properties of five low surface brightness galaxies
(LSBGs) and compare them with related but higher surface brightness galaxies,
using Spitzer Space Telescope images and spectra. All the LSBGs are detected in
the 3.6 and 4.5um bands, representing the stellar population. All but one are
detected at 5.8 and 8.0um, revealing emission from hot dust and aromatic
molecules, though many are faint or point-like at these wavelengths. Detections
of LSBGs at the far-infrared wavelengths, 24, 70, and 160um, are varied in
morphology and brightness, with only two detections at 160um, resulting in
highly varied spectral energy distributions. Consistent with previous
expectations for these galaxies, we find that detectable dust components exist
for only some LSBGs, with the strength of dust emission dependent on the
existence of bright star forming regions. However, the far-infrared emission
may be relatively weak compared with normal star-forming galaxies.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted to Ap
Optical microrheology using rotating laser-trapped particles
We demonstrate an optical system that can apply and accurately measure the
torque exerted by the trapping beam on a rotating birefringent probe particle.
This allows the viscosity and surface effects within liquid media to be
measured quantitatively on a micron-size scale using a trapped rotating
spherical probe particle. We use the system to measure the viscosity inside a

Academic freedom in Europe: reviewing UNESCOâs recommendation
This paper examines the compliance of universities in the European Union with the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of HigherâEducation Teaching Personnel, which deals primarily with protection for academic freedom. The paper briefly surveys the European genesis of the modern research university and academic freedom, before evaluating compliance with the UNESCO recommendation on institutional autonomy, academic freedom, university governance and tenure. Following from this, the paper examines the reasons for the generally low level of compliance with the UNESCO Recommendation within the EU states, and considers how such compliance could be improved
Further Discoveries of 12CO in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
Using the IRAM 30m telescope we have obtained seven new, deep CO J(1-0) and
J(2-1) observations of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. Five of the
galaxies have no CO detected to extremely low limits (0.1-0.4 K km/s at
J(1-0)), while two of the galaxies, UGC 01922 and UGC 12289, have clear
detections in both line transitions. When these observations are combined with
all previous CO observations taken of LSB systems, we compile a total of 34
observations, in which only 3 galaxies have had detections of their molecular
gas. Comparing the LSB galaxies with and without CO detections to a sample of
high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies with CO observations indicates that it
is primarily the low density of baryonic matter within LSB galaxies which is
causing their low CO fluxes. Finally, we note that one of the massive LSB
galaxies studied in this project, UGC 06968 (a Malin-1 `cousin'), has upper
limits placed on both M_H2 and M_H2/M_HI which are 10-20 times lower than the
lowest values found for any galaxy (LSB or HSB) with similar global properties.
This may be due to an extremely low temperature and metallicity within UGC
06968, or simply due to the CO distribution within the galaxy being too diffuse

Point vortices and polynomials of the Sawada-Kotera and Kaup-Kupershmidt equations
Rational solutions and special polynomials associated with the generalized
K_2 hierarchy are studied. This hierarchy is related to the Sawada-Kotera and
Kaup-Kupershmidt equations and some other integrable partial differential
equations including the Fordy-Gibbons equation. Differential-difference
relations and differential equations satisfied by the polynomials are derived.
The relationship between these special polynomials and stationary
configurations of point vortices with circulations Gamma and -2Gamma is
established. Properties of the polynomials are studied. Differential-difference
relations enabling one to construct these polynomials explicitly are derived.

Alkenones as a promising green alternative for waxes in cosmetics and personal care products

Ingredients derived from marine organisms and algae are present in many cosmetic products. In this study, a new green ingredient, a wax (i.e., long-chain alkenones) derived from Isochyrsis sp., was evaluated as an alternative for cosmetic waxes. First, the melting point was determined (71.1â77.4 °C), then the alkenonesâ thickening capability in five emollients was evaluated and compared to microcrystalline wax and ozokerite. Alkenones were compatible with three emollients and thickened the emollients similarly to the other waxes. Then, lipsticks and lip balms were formulated with and without alkenones. All products remained stable at room temperature for 10 weeks. Lipstick formulated with alkenones was the most resistant to high temperature. Finally, alkenones were compared to three cosmetic thickening waxes in creams. Viscosity, rheology, and stability of the creams were evaluated. All creams had a gel-like behavior. Both viscosity and storage modulus increased in the same order: cream with alkenones < cetyl alcohol < stearic acid < glyceryl monostearate. Overall, alkenonesâ performance was comparable to the other three waxes. Alkenones can thus offer a potential green choice as a new cosmetic structuring agent.This research was funded by the Washington Research Foundation and a private donor from friends of
