Field Tuning the G-Factor in InAs Nanowire Double Quantum Dots
We study the effects of magnetic and electric fields on the g-factors of
spins confined in a two-electron InAs nanowire double quantum dot. Spin
sensitive measurements are performed by monitoring the leakage current in the
Pauli blockade regime. Rotations of single spins are driven using
electric-dipole spin resonance. The g-factors are extracted from the spin
resonance condition as a function of the magnetic field direction, allowing
determination of the full g-tensor. Electric and magnetic field tuning can be
used to maximize the g-factor difference and in some cases altogether quench

Radio frequency charge sensing in InAs nanowire double quantum dots
We demonstrate charge sensing of an InAs nanowire double quantum dot (DQD)
coupled to a radio frequency (rf) circuit. We measure the rf signal reflected
by the resonator using homodyne detection. Clear single dot and DQD behavior
are observed in the resonator response. rf-reflectometry allows measurements of
the DQD charge stability diagram in the few-electron regime even when the dc
current through the device is too small to be measured. For a signal-to-noise
ratio of one, we estimate a minimum charge detection time of 350 microseconds
at interdot charge transitions and 9 microseconds for charge transitions with

Literacy: A cultural influence on functional left-right differences in the inferior parietal cortex
The current understanding of hemispheric interaction is limited. Functional hemispheric specialization is likely to depend on both genetic and environmental factors. In the present study we investigated the importance of one factor, literacy, for the functional lateralization in the inferior parietal cortex in two independent samples of literate and illiterate subjects. The results show that the illiterate group are consistently more right-lateralized than their literate controls. In contrast, the two groups showed a similar degree of left-right differences in early speech-related regions of the superior temporal cortex. These results provide evidence suggesting that a cultural factor, literacy, influences the functional hemispheric balance in reading and verbal working memory-related regions. In a third sample, we investigated grey and white matter with voxel-based morphometry. The results showed differences between literacy groups in white matter intensities related to the mid-body region of the corpus callosum and the inferior parietal and parietotemporal regions (literate > illiterate). There were no corresponding differences in the grey matter. This suggests that the influence of literacy on brain structure related to reading and verbal working memory is affecting large-scale brain connectivity more than grey matter per se
A matter of time: Implicit acquisition of recursive sequence structures
A dominant hypothesis in empirical research on the evolution of language is the following: the fundamental difference between animal and human communication systems is captured by the distinction between regular and more complex non-regular grammars. Studies reporting successful artificial grammar learning of nested recursive structures and imaging studies of the same have methodological shortcomings since they typically allow explicit problem solving strategies and this has been shown to account for the learning effect in subsequent behavioral studies. The present study overcomes these shortcomings by using subtle violations of agreement structure in a preference classification task. In contrast to the studies conducted so far, we use an implicit learning paradigm, allowing the time needed for both abstraction processes and consolidation to take place. Our results demonstrate robust implicit learning of recursively embedded structures (context-free grammar) and recursive structures with cross-dependencies (context-sensitive grammar) in an artificial grammar learning task spanning 9 days. Learning recursion: Multiple nested and crossed dependencies
Language acquisition in both natural and artificial language learning settings crucially depends on extracting information from sequence input. A shared sequence learning mechanism is thus assumed to underlie both natural and artificial language learning. A growing body of empirical evidence is consistent with this hypothesis. By means of artificial language learning experiments, we may therefore gain more insight in this shared mechanism. In this paper, we review empirical evidence from artificial language learning and computational modelling studies, as well as natural language data, and suggest that there are two key factors that help determine processing complexity in sequence learning, and thus in natural language processing. We propose that the specific ordering of non-adjacent dependencies (i.e., nested or crossed), as well as the number of non-adjacent dependencies to be resolved simultaneously (i.e., two or three) are important factors in gaining more insight into the boundaries of human sequence learning; and thus, also in natural language processing. The implications for theories of linguistic competence are discussed
Cognitive processing in literate and illiterate subjects: A review of some recent behavioral and functional neuroimaging data
The study of illiterate subjects, which for specific socio-cultural reasons did not have the opportunity to acquire basic reading and writing skills, represents one approach to study the interaction between neurobiological and cultural factors in cognitive development and the functional organization of the human brain. In addition the naturally occurring illiteracy may serve as a model for studying the influence of alphabetic orthography on auditory-verbal language. In this paper we have reviewed some recent behavioral and functional neuroimaging data indicating that learning an alphabetic written language modulates the auditory-verbal language system in a non-trivial way and provided support for the hypothesis that the functional architecture of the brain is modulated by literacy. We have also indicated that the effects of literacy and formal schooling is not limited to language related skills but appears to affect also other cognitive domains. In particular, we indicate that formal schooling influences 2D but not 3D visual naming skills. We have also pointed to the importance of using ecologically relevant tasks when comparing literate and illiterate subjects. We also demonstrate the applicability of a network approach in elucidating differences in the functional organization of the brain between groups. The strength of such an approach is the ability to study patterns of interactions between functionally specialized brain regions and the possibility to compare such patterns of brain interactions between groups or functional states. This complements the more commonly used activation approach to functional neuroimaging data, which characterize functionally specialized regions, and provides important data characterizing the functional interactions between these regions
Enviromental Implications of Växjö Municipality's Energy Requirement for New Residential Buildings
AbstractThe Växjö Municipality in Sweden sets specific energy requirements above the national building code while selling land for new residential buildings. A main energy requirement for Östra Lugnet residential area in Växjö was that all buildings must be connected to the district heating network. In this paper we analysed final energy use of the buildings, and compared the primary energy use and CO2 emission from operation of the buildings connected to district heating system with hypothetical scenarios where only air-source heat pumps were installed. The result showed that district heating is the better option from the perspective of lower carbon emission. Therefore, it seems appropriate for Växjö Municipality to set conditions for new residential buildings in Östra Lugnet to connect to the local district heating network as it contributes to its goal of low carbon society
