    Fiber optic wavelength division multiplexing: Principles and applications in telecommunications and spectroscopy

    Design and fabrication tradeoffs of wavelength division multiplexers are discussed and performance parameters are given. The same multiplexer construction based on prism gratings has been used in spectroscopic applications, in the wavelength region from 450 to 1600 nm. For shorter wavelengths down to 200 nm, a similar instrument based on longer fibers (500 to 1000 micrometer) has been constructed and tested with both a fiber array and a photodiode detector array at the output

    Statistical estimates indicate that the use of checks in the United States has been declining since the mid-1990s, even as the population and the level of economic activity have been increasing. In contrast, the use of electronic payments has been growing at high and accelerating rates. Nonetheless, the paper check remains the predominant means of making retail payments and will likely continue to play a significant role in the U.S. payment system for the foreseeable future. The number and value of checks paid varies across depository institutions according to type, size, and location, in part a result of differences in the use of checks and electronic payments by households, businesses, and governments.     A Program of Photometric Measurements of Solar Irradiance Fluctuations from Ground-based Observations

    Photometric observations of the sun have been carried out at the San Fernando Observatory since early 1985. Since 1986, observations have been obtained at two wavelengths in order to separately measure the contributions of sunspots and bright facular to solar irradiance variations. Researchers believe that the contributions of sunspots can be measured to an accuracy of about plus or minus 30 ppm. The effect of faculae is much less certain, with uncertainties in the range of plus or minus 300 ppm. The larger uncertainty for faculae reflects both the greater difficulty in measuring the facular area, due to their lower contrast compared to sunspots, and the greater uncertainty in their contrast variation with viewing angle on the solar disk. Recent results from two separate photometric telescopes will be compared with bolometric observations from the active cavity radiometer irradiance monitor (ACRIM) that was on board the Solar Max satellite

    A technique is described for measuring electron concentrations in the lower portion of the ionosphere above Punta Chilca. A radio-propagation experiment for measuring Faraday rotation is combined with a dc/Langmuir probe experiment for measuring electron current. The results obtained from the analysis of radio and probe data from Nike Apache 14.532, which was launched at 20:26 UT on May 28, 1975, at a solar zenith angle of 60 deg are presented. A comparison of the profiles of electron concentration indicates that the value of the maximum ionization in the D region under quiet conditions is proportional to the square of the cosine of the solar zenith angle

    Trends in the use of payment instruments in the United States

    In 2003, for the first time, the number of electronic payments in the United States exceeded the number of check payments--a result of substantial growth in electronic payments (especially by debit card) and a decline in check payments. The shift toward electronic payments suggests that, as with other large economies, many payments formerly made by check are now being made with electronic payment instruments. As in past years, however, the value of checks far exceeded the value of commonly used electronic payments. ; Comparisons among groups of depository institutions of different types and sizes suggest that the distribution of payments of different types is linked in part to the types of customers those institutions tend to serve. For example, at credit unions, which generally serve individuals rather than businesses, checks accounted for a smaller proportion of account debits, and debit card payments and ATM withdrawals accounted for a larger proportion, than at institutions of other types. ; Overall, "on us" check payments, those for which the payer and payee used the same institution, declined slightly. The rate at which checks are returned also declined, while the rate of returned ACH payments--almost twice that of checks--increased, in part because of new types of ACH payments, including ACH transactions initiated with a check. ; Data gathered in 2004 also reveal some differences among geographic regions. Debit card use was substantially greater, and check use substantially lower, in the West than in other regions. In contrast, debit card use was considerably less common in the Northeast, and the decline in check payments since 2000 was less pronounced in that region. ; Indirect evidence--data on ATM withdrawals and cash back from debit card payments--suggests that cash remains a popular means of making payments. Industry data showing increases in ATMs and ATM transactions appear to reflect a shift toward greater use of ATMs and less use of checks to obtain cash, and do not necessarily indicate an increase in the use of cash.Payment systems ; Checks

    Vanadium(V) tetra-phenolate complexes: synthesis, structural studies and ethylene homo-(co-)polymerization capability

    Reaction of α,α,α′,α′-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-p-xylene (p-L¹H₄) with two equivalents of [VO(OR)₃] (R = nPr, tBu) in refluxing toluene afforded, after work-up, the complexes {[VO(OnPr)(THF)]₂ (μ-p-L¹)}·2(THF) (1·2(THF)) or {[VO(OtBu)]₂ (μ-p-L¹)}·2MeCN (2·2MeCN), respectively in moderate to good yield. A similar reaction using the meta pro-ligand, namely α,α,α′,α′-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-m-xylene (m-L²H₄) afforded the complex {[VO(OnPr)(THF)]₂ (μ-p-L²)} (3). Use of [V(Np-R¹C₆H₄)(tBuO)₃] (R¹ = Me, CF₃) with p-L¹H₄ led to the isolation of the oxo–imido complexes {[VO(tBuO)][V(Np-R¹C₆H₄) (tBuO)](μ-p-L¹)} (R¹ = Me, 4·CH2Cl₂; CF₃, 5·CH2Cl₂), whereas use of [V(Np-R¹C₆H₄)CL³] (R¹ = Me, CF₃) in combination with Et₃N/p-L¹H₄ or p-L¹Na₄ afforded the diimido complexes {[V(Np-MeC₆H₄)(THF)Cl]₂ (μ-p-L¹)}·4toluene (6·4toluene) or {[V(Np-CF₃C₆H₄)(THF)Cl]₂ (μ-p-L¹)} (7). For comparative studies, the complex [(VO)(μ-OnPr)L³]₂ (8) has also been prepared via the interaction of [VO(nPrO)₃] and 2-(α-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)benzyl)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (L³H2). The crystal structures of 1·2THF, 2·2MeCN, 3, 4·CH2Cl₂, 5·CH2Cl₂, 6·4toluene·THF, 7 and 8 have been determined. Complexes 1–3 and 5–8 have been screened as pre-catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a variety of co-catalysts (with and without a re-activator), including DMAC (dimethylaluminium chloride), DEAC (diethylaluminium chloride), EADC (ethylaluminium dichloride) and EASC (ethylaluminium sesquichloride) at various temperatures and for the co-polymerization of ethylene with propylene; results are compared versus the benchmark catalyst [VO(OEt)Cl₂]. In some cases, activities as high as 243 400 g mmol⁻¹ V⁻¹ h⁻¹ (30.43 kgPE mmol V⁻¹ h⁻¹ bar⁻¹) were achievable, whilst it also proved possible to obtain higher molecular weight polymers (in comparable yields to the use of [VO(OEt)Cl₂]). In all cases with dimethylaluminium chloride (DMAC)/ethyltrichloroacetate (ETA) activation, the activities achieved surpassed those of the benchmark catalyst. In the case of the co-polymerization of ethylene with propylene, complexes 1–3 and 5–8 showed comparable or higher molecular weight than [VO(OEt)Cl₂] with comparable catalytic activities or higher in the case of the imido complexes 6 and 7

    Case-control study of stroke and the quality of hypertension control in north west England

    Objective: To examine the risk of stroke in relation to quality of hypertension control in routine general practice across an entire health district. Design: Population based matched case-control study. Setting: East Lancashire Health District with a participating population of 388,821 aged < or = 80. Subjects: Cases were patients under 80 with their first stroke identified from a population based stroke register between 1 July 1994 and 30 June 1995. For each case two controls matched with the case for age and sex were selected from the same practice register. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure > or = 160 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure > or = 95 mm Hg, or both, on at least two occasions within any three month period or any history of treatment with antihypertensive drugs. Main outcome measures: Prevalence of hypertension and quality of control of hypertension assessed by using the mean blood pressure recorded before stroke) and odds ratios of stroke (derived from conditional logistic regression). Results: Records of 267 cases and 534 controls were examined; 61% and 42% of these subjects respectively were hypertensive. Compared with non-hypertensive subjects hypertensive patients receiving treatment whose average pre-event systolic blood pressure was controlled to or = 160 mm Hg) or untreated had progressively raised odds ratios of 1.6, 2.2, 3.2, and 3.5 respectively. Results for diastolic pressure were similar; both were independent of initial pressures before treatment. Around 21% of strokes were thus attributable to inadequate control with treatment, or 46 first events yearly per 100,000 population aged 40-79. Conclusions: Risk of stroke was clearly related to quality of control of blood pressure with treatment. In routine practice consistent control of blood pressure to below 150/90 mm Hg seems to be required for optimal stroke prevention

    Planar near-field scanning for compact range bistatic radar cross-section measurement

    The design, construction, and testing of a low cost, planar scanning system to be used in a compact range environment for bistatic radar cross-section (bistatic RCS) measurement data are discussed. This scanning system is similar to structures used for measuring near-field antenna patterns. A synthetic aperture technique is used for plane wave reception. System testing entailed comparison of measured and theoretical bistatic RCS of a sphere and a right circular cylinder. Bistatic scattering analysis of the ogival target support, target and pedestal interactions, and compact range room was necessary to determine measurement validity

    Energy non-equipartition in systems of inelastic, rough spheres

    We calculate and verify with simulations the ratio between the average translational and rotational energies of systems with rough, inelastic particles, either forced or freely cooling. The ratio shows non-equipartition of energy. In stationary flows, this ratio depends mainly on the particle roughness, but in nonstationary flows, such as freely cooling granular media, it also depends strongly on the normal dissipation. The approach presented here unifies and simplifies different results obtained by more elaborate kinetic theories.
