This paper compares the perspicacity, appropriateness and preference of web browser icons from leading software providers with those of a culture-specific design. This online study was conducted in Taiwan and involved 103 participants, who were given three sets of web browser icons to review, namely Microsoft Internet Explorer, Macintosh Safari, and culturally specific icons created using the Culture-Centred Design methodology. The findings of the study show that all three sets have generally high recognition rates, but that some icon functions (e.g. Go/Visit and Favourite) in all three sets have poor recognition rates and are considered inappropriate

I-pot: a new approach utilising visual and contextual cues to support users in graphical web browser revisitation.

With a quarter of the world’s population now having access to the internet, the area of web efficiency and optimal use is of growing importance to all users. The function of revisitation, where a user wants to return to a website that they have visited in the recent past becomes more important. Current static and textual approaches developed within the latest versions of mainstream web browsers leave much to be desired. This paper suggests a new approach via the use of organic visual and contextual cues to support users in this task area

Using music and motion analysis to construct 3D animations and visualizations

    Get PDF
This paper presents a study into music analysis, motion analysis and the integration of music and motion to form creative natural human motion in a virtual environment. Motion capture data is extracted to generate a motion library, this places the digital motion model at a fixed posture. The first step in this process is to configure the motion path curve for the database and calculate the possibility that two motions were sequential through the use of a computational algorithm. Every motion is then analysed for the next possible smooth movement to connect to, and at the same time, an interpolation method is used to create the transitions between motions to enable the digital motion models to move fluently. Lastly, a searching algorithm sifts for possible successive motions from the motion path curve according to the music tempo. It was concluded that the higher ratio of rescaling a transition, the lower the degree of natural motion

Syntheses of o-(ß-aminoethyl)-stilbene-urethanes (types 1, 2 and 3) and o-(ß-phenethyl)- stilbenes 4 are described. The urethanes are obtained by degradation of 1-benzyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines with ethylchloroformate; 4 is synthesized by reduction of desoxybenzoines, followed by o-formylation and Wittigreaction. The deuteriated isotopomers were obtained via the corresponding deuteriated precursors

Optically active l-[2-(hydroxymethyl)benzyl]-N-methyl-l,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines react with ethyl chloroformate (CAE) to yield optically active 3-phenylisochromans. Oxidation to the 3-phenylisochroman-l-ones and degradation with ozone to malic acid demonstrate an inversion in the course of the C A E reaction

Exciton-photon coupling in a ZnSe based microcavity fabricated using epitaxial liftoff

We report the observation of strong exciton-photon coupling in a ZnSe based microcavity fabricated using epitaxial liftoff. Molecular beam epitaxial grown ZnSe/Zn0.9_{0.9}Cd0.1_{0.1}Se quantum wells with a one wavelength optical length at the exciton emission were transferred to a SiO2_2/Ta2_2O5_5 mirror with a reflectance of 96% to form finesse matched microcavities. Analysis of our angle resolved transmission spectra reveals key features of the strong coupling regime: anticrossing with a normal mode splitting of 23.6meV23.6 meV at 20K20 K; composite evolution of the lower and upper polaritons; and narrowing of the lower polariton linewidth near resonance. The heavy hole exciton oscillator strength per quantum well is also deduced to be 1.78×1013cm−21.78 \times 10^{13} cm^{-2}.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Reaction of α,α,αâ€Č,αâ€Č-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-p-xylene (p-LÂčH₄) with two equivalents of [VO(OR)₃] (R = nPr, tBu) in refluxing toluene afforded, after work-up, the complexes {[VO(OnPr)(THF)]₂ (ÎŒ-p-LÂč)}·2(THF) (1·2(THF)) or {[VO(OtBu)]₂ (ÎŒ-p-LÂč)}·2MeCN (2·2MeCN), respectively in moderate to good yield. A similar reaction using the meta pro-ligand, namely α,α,αâ€Č,αâ€Č-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-m-xylene (m-LÂČH₄) afforded the complex {[VO(OnPr)(THF)]₂ (ÎŒ-p-LÂČ)} (3). Use of [V(Np-RÂčC₆H₄)(tBuO)₃] (RÂč = Me, CF₃) with p-LÂčH₄ led to the isolation of the oxo–imido complexes {[VO(tBuO)][V(Np-RÂčC₆H₄) (tBuO)](ÎŒ-p-LÂč)} (RÂč = Me, 4·CH2Cl₂; CF₃, 5·CH2Cl₂), whereas use of [V(Np-RÂčC₆H₄)CLÂł] (RÂč = Me, CF₃) in combination with Et₃N/p-LÂčH₄ or p-LÂčNa₄ afforded the diimido complexes {[V(Np-MeC₆H₄)(THF)Cl]₂ (ÎŒ-p-LÂč)}·4toluene (6·4toluene) or {[V(Np-CF₃C₆H₄)(THF)Cl]₂ (ÎŒ-p-LÂč)} (7). For comparative studies, the complex [(VO)(ÎŒ-OnPr)LÂł]₂ (8) has also been prepared via the interaction of [VO(nPrO)₃] and 2-(α-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)benzyl)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (LÂłH2). The crystal structures of 1·2THF, 2·2MeCN, 3, 4·CH2Cl₂, 5·CH2Cl₂, 6·4toluene·THF, 7 and 8 have been determined. Complexes 1–3 and 5–8 have been screened as pre-catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a variety of co-catalysts (with and without a re-activator), including DMAC (dimethylaluminium chloride), DEAC (diethylaluminium chloride), EADC (ethylaluminium dichloride) and EASC (ethylaluminium sesquichloride) at various temperatures and for the co-polymerization of ethylene with propylene; results are compared versus the benchmark catalyst [VO(OEt)Cl₂]. In some cases, activities as high as 243 400 g mmol⁻Âč V⁻Âč h⁻Âč (30.43 kgPE mmol V⁻Âč h⁻Âč bar⁻Âč) were achievable, whilst it also proved possible to obtain higher molecular weight polymers (in comparable yields to the use of [VO(OEt)Cl₂]). In all cases with dimethylaluminium chloride (DMAC)/ethyltrichloroacetate (ETA) activation, the activities achieved surpassed those of the benchmark catalyst. In the case of the co-polymerization of ethylene with propylene, complexes 1–3 and 5–8 showed comparable or higher molecular weight than [VO(OEt)Cl₂] with comparable catalytic activities or higher in the case of the imido complexes 6 and 7

This paper compares the perspicacity, appropriateness and preference of web browser icons from leading software providers with those of a culture-specific design. The history and future direction of web browsers is outlined, together with the implications for the future growth of Chinese internet users. China, with its rapidly expanding young netizens has now overtaken the USA in terms of the number of internet users (253 million) and we predict it will reach saturation (≈70% internet penetration rate) by 2012. If correct, this will have a dramatic effect on the use of English as the ‘Lingua Franca’ of the Internet. This online study was conducted in Taiwan and involved 103 participants (mean age 21 years), who were given three sets of web browser icons to review, namely Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, Macintosh Safari 3.0, and culturally specific icons created using the Culture-Centred Design methodology. The findings of the study show that all three sets have generally high recognition rates, but that some icon functions (e.g. Go/Visit and Favourite) in all three sets have poor recognition rates and are considered inappropriate. Furthermore, some significant differences were found when we analysed the level of user experience amongst several icons
