Asymmetric Gaussian steering: when Alice and Bob disagree
Asymmetric steering is an effect whereby an inseparable bipartite system can
be found to be described by either quantum mechanics or local hidden variable
theories depending on which one of Alice or Bob makes the required
measurements. We show that, even with an inseparable bipartite system,
situations can arise where Gaussian measurements on one half are not sufficient
to answer the fundamental question of which theory gives an adequate
description and the whole system must be considered. This phenomenon is
possible because of an asymmetry in the definition of the original
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox and in this article we show theoretically that
it may be demonstrated, at least in the case where Alice and Bob can only make
Gaussian measurements, using the intracavity nonlinear coupler.Comment: 5 Pages, 4 Figure
Spectral Analysis of a Four Mode Cluster State
We theoretically evaluate the squeezed joint operators produced in a single
optical parametric oscillator which generates quadripartite entangled outputs,
as demonstrated experimentally by Pysher et al. \cite{pysher}[Phys. Rev. Lett.
107, 030505 (2011)]. Using a linearized fluctuation analysis we calculate the
squeezing of the joint quadrature operators below threshold for a range of
local oscillator phases and frequencies. These results add to the existing

Denoising time-resolved microscopy image sequences with singular value thresholding.
Time-resolved imaging in microscopy is important for the direct observation of a range of dynamic processes in both the physical and life sciences. However, the image sequences are often corrupted by noise, either as a result of high frame rates or a need to limit the radiation dose received by the sample. Here we exploit both spatial and temporal correlations using low-rank matrix recovery methods to denoise microscopy image sequences. We also make use of an unbiased risk estimator to address the issue of how much thresholding to apply in a robust and automated manner. The performance of the technique is demonstrated using simulated image sequences, as well as experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy data, where surface adatom motion and nanoparticle structural dynamics are recovered at rates of up to 32 frames per second.Junior Research Fellowship from Clare CollegeThis is the final version of the article. The experience of adolescents participating in a randomised clinical trial in the field of mental health: a qualitative study
Background
This descriptive study aimed to investigate adolescents’ motivations for participating in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), to explore the understanding that the young people had regarding a number of aspects of the trial design, to examine whether or not they found participation in the trial to be acceptable and what affected this, and to identify whether and how the young people felt that their participation in the RCT impacted on their experience of therapy and on therapeutic change.
Methods
Seventy-six adolescents who were taking part in a large-scale RCT to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of psychological therapies for depression were interviewed at two time-points after completing therapy. The semi-structured interviews, which included a focus on the young people’s experience of the research study, were analysed using framework analysis.
Results
The vast majority of adolescents found it acceptable to participate in the clinical trial, and many agreed to participate for reasons of ‘conditional altruism’. However consent was often given without great understanding of the key elements of the trial, including the difference between treatment arms and the randomisation process. Although the adolescents were largely positive about their experiences from taking part, the study raises questions about whether clinical outcomes may be influenced by participation in the research elements of the trial.
Conclusions
Although adolescents are under-represented in clinical trials, those who do participate are generally positive about the experience; however, careful thought needs to be given to key elements of the trial design and the potential impact of the research participation on clinical outcomes
Mentalizing techniques used by psychodynamic therapists working with children and early adolescents
The aim of this study was to identify, categorize, and develop a conceptual frame of mentalization-based interventions used by experienced child and adolescent psychodynamic therapists. Two experienced therapists selected 14 sessions that represented their work during the first year of treatment. Sessions were transcribed and segmented to identify interactional units for coding. QDA Miner software was used to facilitate data analysis. A systematic qualitative, inductive/deductive approach was followed starting from categories identified in the literature, but also including newly emerging categories and interventions. Seven sessions were double coded to stabilize the coding tree and a "member check" was completed where therapists rated their own transcripts. A total of 24 mentalization-based techniques were identified, including 17 additional techniques. A conceptual framework organizing all observed mentalization-based interventions is proposed. The findings of this study provide a framework for studying techniques that may enhance the capacity to mentalize, and that could be features of therapeutic practice across a range of modalities of psychotherapy
A comparative study of dynamical simulation methods for the dissociation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates
We describe a pairing mean-field theory related to the
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, and apply it to the dynamics of dissociation
of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) into correlated bosonic atom
pairs. We also perform the same simulation using two stochastic phase-space
techniques for quantum dynamics -- the positive P-representation method and the
truncated Wigner method. By comparing the results of our calculations we are
able to assess the relative strength of these theoretical techniques in
describing molecular dissociation in one spatial dimension. An important aspect
of our analysis is the inclusion of atom-atom interactions which can be
problematic for the positive-P method. We find that the truncated Wigner method
mostly agrees with the positive-P simulations, but can be simulated for
significantly longer times. The pairing mean-field theory results diverge from

Quadripartite continuous-variable entanglement via quadruply concurrent downconversion
We investigate an intra-cavity coupled down-conversion scheme to generate
quadripartite entanglement using concurrently resonant nonlinearities. We
verify that quadripartite entanglement is present in this system by calculating
the output fluctuation spectra and then considering violations of optimized
inequalities of the van Loock-Furusawa type. The entanglement characteristics
both above and below the oscillation threshold are considered. We also present
analytic solutions for the quadrature operators and the van Loock-Furusawa
correlations in the undepleted pump approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Analysis of a continuous-variable quadripartite cluster state from a single optical parametric oscillator
We examine the feasibility of generating continuous-variable multipartite
entanglement in an intra-cavity quadruply concurrent downconversion scheme that
has been proposed for the generation of cluster states by Menicucci \textit{et
al.} [Physical Review Letters \textbf{101}, 130501 (2008)]. By calculating
optimized versions of the van Loock-Furusawa correlations we demonstrate
genuine quadripartite entanglement and investigate the degree of entanglement
present. Above the oscillation threshold the basic cluster state geometry under
consideration suffers from phase diffusion. We alleviate this problem by
incorporating a small injected signal into our analysis. Finally, we
investigate squeezed joint operators. While the squeezed joint operators
approach zero in the undepleted regime, we find that this is not the case when
we consider the full interaction Hamiltonian and the presence of a cavity. In
fact, we find that the decay of these operators is minimal in a cavity, and
even depletion alone inhibits cluster state formation.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figure
'It's always difficult when it's family. . . whereas when you're talking to a therapist. . .': Parents' views of cognitive-behaviour therapy for depressed adolescents
BACKGROUND: Parents are key to helping their adolescent child access psychological therapy for mental health problems such as depression. However, little is known about how parents experience their child's psychological therapy. We aimed to explore parents' experiences of their adolescent child's cognitive behaviour therapy for depression. METHOD: We applied Thematic Analysis (TA) to qualitative data from in-depth interviews with parents (N = 16) whose adolescent child was randomly allocated to CBT in a large multisite RCT for adolescent depression (the IMPACT trial). Interviews were conducted at the end of treatment. RESULTS: We generated two main themes: parents' perceptions of the adolescent's journey through therapy, and parents' perceptions of the therapeutic setting and process. Each included four sub-themes. Parents talked about key factors that impacted on their child's progress through treatment, including the adolescent's readiness for therapy and the adolescent-therapist relationship. CONCLUSION: Parents' insights confirm the foundations of what is considered good clinical practice of CBT for adolescent depression, including tailoring therapy to the adolescent, and establishing a strong adolescent-therapist relationship. Parents recognised that, for CBT to be helpful, their child had to be willing to engage in therapy and able to develop a trusting relationship with their therapist
Identification of Non-unitary triplet pairing in a heavy Fermion superconductor UPt_3
A NMR experiment recently done by Tou et al. on a heavy Fermion
superconductor UPt is interpreted in terms of a non-unitary spin-triplet
pairing state which we have been advocating. The proposed state successfully
explains various aspects of the seemingly complicated Knight shift behaviors
probed for major orientations, including a remarkable d-vector rotation under
weak fields. This entitles UPt as the first example that a charged many
body system forms a spin-triplet odd-par ity pairing at low temperatures and
demonstrates unambiguously that the putative spin-orbit coupling in UPt is
