    Surface Quality of a Work Material Influence on Vibrations in a Cutting Process

    The problem of stability in the machining processes is an important task. It is strictly connected with the final quality of a product. In this paper we consider vibrations of a tool-workpiece system in a straight turning process induced by random disturbances and their effect on a product surface. Basing on experimentally obtained system parameters we have done the simulations using one degree of freedom model. The noise has been introduced to the model by the Langevin equation.     A study of the symmetry of roots and root canal morphology in mandibular anterior teeth using cone-beam computed tomographic imaging in a Polish population

    Background: The purpose of the study was to analyse mandibular anterior teeth in a Polish population and determine the symmetry of root and root canal morphology between the right and left side using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning.Materials and methods: From 111 CBCT examinations, 303 pairs of equivalent mandibular anterior teeth were analysed on the right and left sides to evaluate symmetry. Axial, sagittal, and cross-sectional slices with a thickness of 0.2–0.25 mm were used. The number of root canals and their internal patterns were classified following Vertucci’s criteria.Results: All incisors in this study had 1 root. Canines usually had a single root and much less often had 2 roots. Type I and III root canal configurations were found most often, while type V and II configurations were less frequent. Significant compatibility between the left and right side was observed in all evaluated variables. Incisors had the highest symmetry with regard to the number of roots (100%). Second canals were observed more often in males than females, but only the results in lateral incisors were significant.Conclusions: This study provides supplemental information for dentists and should help them to better predict the morphology of mandibular anterior teeth in complicated cases in the Polish population.     Assumptions behind grammatical approaches to code-switching: when the blueprint is a red herring

    Many of the so-called ‘grammars’ of code-switching are based on various underlying assumptions, e.g. that informal speech can be adequately or appropriately described in terms of ‘‘grammar’’; that deep, rather than surface, structures are involved in code-switching; that one ‘language’ is the ‘base’ or ‘matrix’; and that constraints derived from existing data are universal and predictive. We question these assumptions on several grounds. First, ‘grammar’ is arguably distinct from the processes driving speech production. Second, the role of grammar is mediated by the variable, poly-idiolectal repertoires of bilingual speakers. Third, in many instances of CS the notion of a ‘base’ system is either irrelevant, or fails to explain the facts. Fourth, sociolinguistic factors frequently override ‘grammatical’ factors, as evidence from the same language pairs in different settings has shown. No principles proposed to date account for all the facts, and it seems unlikely that ‘grammar’, as conventionally conceived, can provide definitive answers. We conclude that rather than seeking universal, predictive grammatical rules, research on CS should focus on the variability of bilingual grammars

    Prevalence of the Onodi cell in the Polish adult population: an anatomical computed tomography study

    Background: Onodi cell is a posterior ethmoid air cell with the optic canal bulging into it; the common position of the bulge is into the sphenoid sinus, usually immediately posterior to the posterior ethmoid air cells. Variable pneumatization patterns lead to various structures of lamellae and sinuses occasionally exposing important nerves and vessels, such as the optic and vidian nerves, internal carotid artery and cavernous sinus. In clinical practice, special imaging techniques are used to navigate through the paranasal sinuses and hence avoid injury to these structures. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of the Onodi cell in the Polish population and compare it with other reported occurrences. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of 296 computed tomography (CT) scans of patients treated in Cracow, Poland, using a Siemens Somatom Sensation 16 spiral CT scanner. No contrast medium was administered. Results: The Onodi cell was found in 31 out of the 296 patients, or approximately 10.5%, consistent with the majority of research reporting on Onodi variants. Additionally, there was one presentation of a bilateral Onodi cell in a male patient. No statistically significant difference was found between the male and female populations with a positive identification of the variant (p = 0.095, Chi2 test). Conclusions: This study helped approximate the Onodi variant prevalence of 10.47%, falling within a commonly reported range 8-14%. This gives clinicians and surgeons a better understanding of this variant's structure and significance, and therefore an opportunity to improve treatment outcomes and research

    Effective temperatures of magnetic CP stars from full spectral energy distributions

    New determinations of effective temperatures of 23 magnetic, chemically peculiar (mCP) stars were obtained from a fit of metal enhanced model atmospheres to the observed spectral energy distributions (SED) from UV to red. The root-mean-square (RMS) method was used to fit the theoretical SED to the observations corrected for reddening if necessary, with metallicity and effective temperature as the fitting parameters. Gravity was assumed to be equal to log g = 4 for main sequence stars and to log g = 3 for two giants in the considered sample. Equal weights were given to the UV part and visual part of SED. Independently of the formal quality of fit resulting from the RMS method applied to the whole SED, the quality of fit was additionally checked for each star by determination of the temperature from the best fitting model atmosphere to the UV part and the visual part of SED separately. Both temperatures should be close to one another if the global best fitting model satisfactorily describes the full observed SED. This is the case for about a half of the investigated stars but the difference exceeds 750 K for the remaining stars with the extreme values above 2000 K. Possible reasons for such discrepancies are discussed. New, revised calibrations of effective temperature and bolometric corrections of mCP stars in terms of reddening free Stromgren indices are given.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted to MNRA

    Status of Nb-Pb Superconducting RF-Gun Cavities

    We report on the progress and status of an electron RFgun made of two superconductors: niobium and lead [1]. The presented design combines the advantages of the RF performance of bulk niobium superconducting cavities and the reasonably high quantum efficiency of lead. The design of RF-gun and performance of 3 test cavities without and with the emitting lead spot are reported in this contribution. Measured quantum efficiency for lead at 2K is presented briefly.     Mood Modulates Auditory Laterality of Hemodynamic Mismatch Responses during Dichotic Listening

    Hemodynamic mismatch responses can be elicited by deviant stimuli in a sequence of standard stimuli even during cognitive demanding tasks. Emotional context is known to modulate lateralized processing. Right-hemispheric negative emotion processing may bias attention to the right and enhance processing of right-ear stimuli. The present study examined the influence of induced mood on lateralized pre-attentive auditory processing of dichotic stimuli using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Faces expressing emotions (sad/happy/neutral) were presented in a blocked design while a dichotic oddball sequence with consonant-vowel (CV) syllables in an event-related design was simultaneously administered. Twenty healthy participants were instructed to feel the emotion perceived on the images and to ignore the syllables. Deviant sounds reliably activated bilateral auditory cortices and confirmed attention effects by modulation of visual activity. Sad mood induction activated visual, limbic and right prefrontal areas. A lateralization effect of emotion-attention interaction was reflected in a stronger response to right-ear deviants in the right auditory cortex during sad mood. This imbalance of resources may be a neurophysiological correlate of laterality in sad mood and depression. Conceivably, the compensatory right-hemispheric enhancement of resources elicits increased ipsilateral processing

    Combinatorial Development of Biomaterials for Clonal Growth of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells

    July 3, 2012Both human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells can self-renew indefinitely in culture; however, present methods to clonally grow them are inefficient and poorly defined for genetic manipulation and therapeutic purposes. Here we develop the first chemically defined, xeno-free, feeder-free synthetic substrates to support robust self-renewal of fully dissociated human embryonic stem and induced pluripotent stem cells. Material properties including wettability, surface topography, surface chemistry and indentation elastic modulus of all polymeric substrates were quantified using high-throughput methods to develop structure–function relationships between material properties and biological performance. These analyses show that optimal human embryonic stem cell substrates are generated from monomers with high acrylate content, have a moderate wettability and employ integrin α[subscript v]β[subscript 3] and α[subscript v]β[subscript 5] engagement with adsorbed vitronectin to promote colony formation.
